M&P 9FS vs. HK P30 at the range today...
So I'm at the range today and I'm on the 40 yard station with my M&P 9FS. Along comes another shooter to the station 2 down from me, and starts shooting. He's all over with shot placement (averaging about 1 out of 6 shots hitting the steel).
I keep lugging along and minding my own business. I then notice this guy is shooting stride for stride with me. About 75 rounds later, I'm feeling pretty satisfied with 90% target hit rate. The guy 2 lanes over - not so much.
I just happen to ask what he's shooting. He replies HK P30, and did I want to shoot it? Of course I say no thanks. He insists and I oblige. 10 rounds later with a pistol I've never shot before. 8 out of 10 of my shots rang steel. I then ask if he wants to shoot my M&P? He says sure. 3 out of 10 and he's not too happy.
We both go to pack it up for the day and the fellow asks me - how much was your M&P? I say $300 (used). I then ask - how much was the P30? His reply, $700 (new) ouch.
Feeling pretty good with my recent M&P purchase.

Sounds like you're a good shot, and your stable mate needs some work...! A high dollar gun does not make a person a better shot, and no offense, but I'd take the HK over the M&P any day. I own both, so I'm basing this opinion on experience.
The P30 is a great gun, and if he paid $700 new, he actually got a very good deal. He probably bought it last year when they were offering a big rebate, as that's more like a $875/$900 gun. And you got a great deal on your used M&P, as well! Different strokes for different folks.

$900 - for that much, a pistol better wipe my *** and powder my ***** for me.
And I'm a decent shot - just had a good day at the range.

I'd still rather have the HK P30. ....maybe it's the German in me?

I've had both and would take an HK over most guns. Especially a USP. Their reliability and longevity is untouched

Don't blame the gun for the shooter. M&P 9mm's are notorious for accuracy issues. HK's are well known for their Match quality barrels. Mastering H&K triggers is a different story, but folks who know what they are doing do great with them. Also, what size steel? My training partner is a phenomenal shooter with outstanding vision for his age and presses a trigger better than anyone I know. We were out training some of HK's employees and he was hitting 8" steel at 100 yards every shot with a stock Vp9. He can do this easily at 50 with both hands....a 100 was impressive as I can barely see an 8" plate at 100.
Like others here, I would take an H&K everyday of the week. Some of us can actually get the money out of them in performance.

12" steel squared plates is what we were shooting at. I didn't like the trigger on the HK at all.
100 yards at 8" plate??? Damn, I'm lucky to hit 1 out of every 5 or 6 shots on a 12" plate at 100 yards.

The P30 is hammer fired and the VP9 is essentially a striker P30. HK makes several styles of triggers with different variations of springs. You can have 4 styles but within each there may be variations depending on how heavy or light they made it. It's a little weird and when it comes to HK I don't mess with that stuff. I either initially like it or I don't

The biggest factor that affects both precision and accuracy is the nut behind the trigger.

Bought a Walther PPQ and not a HK P30 or M&P because of the trigger. Very happy with the PPQ. VP9 looks like a nice option and price.

I spent a solid couple years with P30 LEM gun. Love the trigger for people management. Mastering multiple triggers is tough, but it allows you to better fit the tool to the job. Also from an instructor stand point my business partner and I try to stay current on all the trigger systems out there so we can better work with students with different guns.

I honestly just don't get the whole HK, Walther, Sig thing.
I think they all make great products - but the prices stop me from saying anything more positive about them. Guess I'm just to poor to understand fine quality firearms.
I do have to say my dream gun is an HK P7 squeeze cocker.

Count me in the "rather have the HK" camp.
The M&P is a good gun for the money. H&K simply makes good guns period.
It's all preference. I don't let a few hundred bucks between me and a gun I like. I wouldn't have any nice things.

Easy work around the prices is to buy a used one. Just bought a USP 9 for $450, a USP 45 for $375. Not expensive when used
