Could you buy a High Standard Sport King with an adjustable rear sight or were adjustable rear sights aftermarket additions? I'm looking to buy one with an adjustable rear sight and neither of us knows if it is original.

I've not seen one with an adjustable rear sight, but that doesn't mean that one couldn't be fitted either at the factory or aftermarket. It would probably require a higher front sight than standard. There is a Hi-Standard forum and someone there could probably give you an authoritative answer.

High Standard did make a model they called the Field King which was
not a target model but basically a Sport King with adjustable sights.
If the gun is marked Sport King then I seriously doubt the adjustable
sight is original.

This is one of those Field kings with an adjustable rear sight.
I think it is called a Davis rear sight.

If the sight looks similar it may be factory and worth checking on.

BTW that field king is a shooter,

I did some checking in one of my books.
It states it could be factory as it was an option but very few were seen/done

I think it is an aftermarket. So long as it works, I will be happy.

Doug, my Uncle gave me his Sport King, he bought it new in 1950. It does not have an adjustable sight.

A Sport King with adjustable sights were probably quite the shooters.

If you are wanting to shoot it this would not be a deal stopper for me. Does it have the box? How many magazines? Is it the lever bbl release?

Look the magazines over, any lip damage probably means it will have to be fixed or new ones bought.

What is the ball park price? Over 300 or less? I see them in the 275 to 325 range.

Nice, it's the 4" bbl. Mine has a 6. The 4 is more rare. There was an option to get both.

The Sport King and Field Kings are fine pistols, but they were always the lesser expensive sport pistols that took a back seat to the HS Trophy's and Victors.

So I can understand why a person would pick up a good looking Sport or Field King, but if looking to buy a classic High Standard, why not just go for a Trophy, Citation (same as Trophy with silver trim) or Victor?
All of those will have adjustable sights, ready to go for excellent target use.

The field king pictured and the victor pictured I don't know which is more precise.

They were all good shooters....so I guess it's hard to explain.

That rear sight looks aftermarket to me. It's too high, which forced them to change the front sight too. That front sight is not High Standard's work.

Not that it's not an interesting shooter, but there's little collector value there.

I just want a shooter.

Doug if you don't know one can still get magazines from the new High Standard company.

If you have shot one you already understand, everyone who has shot mine loves it and wants it. Just like I did when I was a kid and my Uncle let me shoot his now mine.

In case you haven't figured this out yet, you should stick to Standard Velocity .22 lr, and they tend to prefer CCI Std. velocity.

That looks like an older Micro brand adjustable rear sight. Aftermarket.

Hi-Standard offered an adjustable sight upgrade for the Sport King. Here's a link to the owners manual on Steve's Pages. $6.25 got you the front/rear Kit:

That is a Micro Gun Sight Company adjustable. They are out of business now. I used them several times while pistolsmithing for people that didn't want to spend the money that Bomar had to have. I have the prototype of that sight in my sight collection as Micro sent it to me to evaluate for them. It was mechanically very good and as good of a sight picture as the Bomar.

BTW; High Standard Sport Kings are my most favorite 'plinker' semi-autos. I have one with a 4" bbl. in .22 Short. What surprising accuracy. And, I also have several in .22 LR. I found that the Long Rifle version 'battered' a little with extreme high velocity ammo, so I just replaced the main recoil spring when using a heavier version. Worked like a charm. I have several Colt 1911s with Ciener Conversion Slide/barrel to .22 LR and my High Standards will shoot right along with them. High Standard magazine lips are a little bit of bother, but the magazine lip reformer tools keeps them in shape (literally). ...........

I had the same idea for my HD Military. When it was in for a rebuild at High Standard (Houston) I asked about a heavier recoil spring for high velocity ammo. They cautioned against it.

Seems the heavier spring causes another problem. They had seen several come in with peened breech faces. The heavier spring caused greater forward velocity of the slide. Not sure if that applied to just the older models or not.

My first handgun was a HS Dura-Matic. I bought it at the Western Auto in Rantoul, IL for $69.00 in 1972. I had to forego lunches and each day I did that I put $1.00 away. I put the gun on layaway and paid a little each month. I gave briefings to airmen who were being discharged at Chanute AFB and was in town once a month. I still have it, although the grips started to deteriorate and I got a replacement from Brownells.

Amazing how accurate a fixed sight gun can be.
