Grandson tries out his Christmas guns
I decided to give my grandson a couple of very special Christmas gifts. His mother told me that he had asked "Santa Clause" for a .22 pistol and a cartridge belt with a holster. With his parents approval and a lot of advice from granddaddy,I presented him with a first-year Ruger Single Six flatgate,a carved holster and 1,000 rounds of ammo. He was pleased. He and my son met me at our hunting club today to try out his new acquisition.
I also brought along an old Remington Model 12C that is one of my favorites. He decided that he really liked it too,so you can guess the rest. Yep,that one went home with him too. I have to admit that I'm a pushover when it comes to this kid.
It was a good day.

As if this story wasn't already tugging at the heart, you had to add in the golden retriever for a real Norman Rockwell moment.

Ah a Remington 12C. That brings back good memories. I bought mine when I was 14 or 15. I took it for an extended 3 month trip to Alaska when I was 16 and again when I was 20. It went away in a moment of weakness soon after and miss it more than I miss my sanity.

Glad I'm behind a screen, those pics do tug at your heart.
Next time I'm out with the Great nieces and nephews and or Sabrina, I'll find a way to take pics. Its been requested that I get pics with her using the 10 - shot Chiapas/Plinkerton I just got her.
My Dr. also has and loves that Ruger single six.

My 5yo grandson got his first red rider bb rifle. I can't wait for him to shoot 22's.

A first gen flat gate makes one ******* Christmas present, Grandson or not. I hope he appreciates what you gave him.

Gotta agree, Aticus. I gave my daughter and both my granddaughters OM Single Sixes, but my flatgate is still MY flatgate. Ain't lettin' go of that one - not yet, anyways.

Not to sound like the grinch, but it's just irresponsible not making sure the kids are wearing eye protection.

That's what you gleaned from this? You made a conscious effort to slam us as being "irresponsible".
Growing up we didn't have "shooting glasses", nor did we have them in Nam.
Remind me to confer with you the next time I go shooting to clear your check list.
Not to sound like "the Grinch"? You knew exactly what you were sounding like.

Ease up, Rusty, Irn-Bru may not have been tactful using the word "irresponsible", but he's right about the kids not wearing eye protection. I too saw that right off. Right from the git-go, kids should be taught safety including eye & hearing protection. I love kids, so all the more reason they should be protected. Yeah, I didn't have eye/ear protection either back in the 60's (including my service years of '64-'68) & my ears would ring for days after shooting, but these beautiful grand-children deserve to learn from our mistakes.
Respectfully, Hank M.

I kinda feel like I deprived my kids starting them with a MKII and not a single six.
I turned down a good deal on a bearcat awhile back. Not one of my better decisions.

I apologize, using the word "irresponsible" was harsh, and it's completely your choice for you and your family to wear eye protection.

Took my granddaughter (now 21) shooting, and she decided she prefers semi-auto's, more specifically my 9mm shield. She controls it well, but does need some more guidance in shooting. I wish I lived about 850 miles closer so I could take her shooting more often. I now pretty well know what her collage grad. present will be in May. New gun, couple extra mags, range bag, ear muff's, cleaning kit, and maybe 500 rounds of 9mm. I have to convince her to bend over and pick up the brass and G'pa can reload for her a lot cheaper than she can buy ammo. (yea, free is good).

As most of us that shot without eye and ear protection back then, I have lost most of my high frequency hearing. One can get hearing aids, but one cannot replace a lost eye. I learned the hard way, now I always wear both. It is required to shoot at the Sheriff's Office range. I have to qualify once a year for my LEOSA permit. I only wish we knew then, what we know now.

I've never used eye protection and never had any incidents. However, I'm adamant about ear protection.

Great post Bobby. Reminded me of Skeeter Skelton's son shooting his 44. Sorry it turn into a "this is how to raise your kids" thread. BUT, that was a gracious Christmas present and I am sure Ben was thrilled. Maybe he will let you borrow that 12c on occasion.
Apology accepted Irn-Bru

I've started all my grandkids with a Star Model F 22 pistol(Discussed in another thread) and a Chinese copy of the Browning 22 auto. These 2 to me seem to be almost ideal guns for 10 year old's to be able to handle.

I see several pictures of kids with a gun but none with the gun actually firing. I have several of my Grandson posed with an EMPTY gun and he is not wearing shooting glasses. I also have several with the gun actually firing, those have shooting glasses.
It strikes me as a shame that when a person proudly shows his/her kids/grandkids enjoying the shooting sports someone has to find fault. Accept the revelations for what they are and be happy our passions are being passed to a new generation.
Sorry for the rant but I see this waaaayyyyy too often.

I see having eye and ear protection as a big deal. That's just my opinion and at the end of the day it's up to the individual to make there own choice. A very good friends son almost lost an eye shooting. He was with dad shooting his .22 rifle when the round ricocheted and hit him in the corner of his eye. The boy was VERY lucky they saved his eye and vision.
This thread is not about eye protection and what not, it's about the kids enjoying themselves. I've apologized and sorry for spoiling a very nice moment. In the future I won't be as brash to make comments like that, and keep them to myself. Again I apologize, and hope the kids and grandpa enjoy shooting for many many years. It's a great way to bond.

Still remember him letting me shoot his 22 at light bulbs at Christmas time, what great fun.

Not to brag, but my son Eric and I designed the logo originally and sold them on the various forums and at local gun shows through BIGBORE CLOTHES. We also made firearm themed clothing, specifically Tees, sweats, caps, hoodies, etc. Unfortunately we didn't think to trademark the design so it's now offered with changes.
We don't have any cups left but one day I'll inventory the tees and post them here at a fire sale.

Ha ha....Neither, My Grandfather was plant manager for Westinghouse's light bulb division back then and he would bring boxes of clear unfinished rejects for targets up to my Uncles house in upstate NY , we would hang them on branches as reactive targets ...sooo much fun for a 6th grader !
