Default Reconditioned Winchester Model 1885 22 short

I bought this online at an auction, bid $700 not thinking I would ever win it. It has replacement stocks, & barrel with vintage front globe sight which I cannot find another example of, has only patent dates on it, with flip type blade & peepsight inside. Rear tang sight is M.S.A. {Marble Safety Axe Co.} which is pre Marbles. It also has skeletonized hammer as well as Winchester factory single set trigger which is in working condition. The rifle was made in 1895 so is over 120 yrs. old & still a shooter.

Sweet....... I've one from 1887....buckhorn rear sight....hanging in my office along with my 1st rifle a .22lr Stevens Favorite........

Mine is all original ( as far as I know) came from my Dad...... I've always assumed it was one of the Dept "turn ins" ( pre-67). Not uncommon for guns no longer wanted to be dropped at the Police Station............been around for at least 50-55years

IIRC it weights about 9-9.5lbs....should absorb the recoil .... of the a .22 short.

Overall mine's about 90% (some bluing wear on the edges of the octagonal barrel)...... only thing I ever did was oil the stocks..... was offered $1,100-1,500 at a couple of local gun shows..... 10-15 years ago. No checkering but a black wood inlay at the front of the forend.

Default A very slick gun.

I have one of the new production Miroku 1885 copies in .22 LR. It is just the ticket for shooting squirrels off of the bird feeder.

Default Globe sight

That front sight is a Lyman No.7 windguage front sight. Very neat!

You might look carefully for barrel markings. That is the time and style of Pope made barrels. He favored the smaller calibers though more often 25 cal. Beautiful gun. I didn't dig by vintage sight book out but I think Ken is correct.

Default Winchester 1885

Thanks for the info on the front sight, the barrel is unmarked except for "C72" located just in front of fore arm, no markings under the fore arm on barrel. Incidentally, I also won 4 S& W single shot target pistols, 2 of which were barreled by H M Pope & stamped on top of the barrels, both also have the other characteristics of his work, such as trigger stops, etc.

Yes, I was also going to mention the possibility of that being a "Pope" barrel. His barrels were prized by the target shooters, even the backyard variety. ........ And back in that era a Sunday afternoon gathering wasn't complete until the men and boys retired to the backyard or the pasture and had a little informal Shooting Contest. There were many rifles made for this market, most with long heavy barrels, peep sights and chambered in .22 Short, CB or Long. .............

Beautiful Rifle!!! I'm green with envy. Should be worth about three to four times what you paid for it. I love all the bells and whistles: tang peep, fancy front sight, checkering, skeleton hammer, set trigger. Wow!!

Default Winchester 1885

Special thanks to member "kcwheel" for identifying the front globe sight as Lyman #7 windgauge sight. I had been looking & posting on others sites to no avail. Found old ad online yesterday, as shown.

That's an awesome little gun. You did well on the price.

I have a Low Wall in .22 LR that I'm restoring. Took quite a bit of work to bring the stocks back. They're not perfect, but they look good. Need to get it blued. Debating whether to color case the receiver or blue it.

Also have a High Wall Musket in .22 Short. Everything is there and condition is decent, but the bore is bad. Will reline it at some point, but don't know if it will be Short or LR.
