I was at the local gun shop looking at the meager AR type rifles chambered in .233 Remington. AR type rifles are fairly expensive in Ontario. They usually run you north of a grand. I was about ready to settle for the cheapest I could find when I asked the proprietor if there was anything else chambered for that cartridge. She came back with this odd looking rifle that was used. I liked the bull barrel, as this was going to be a range only gun anyways. I knew enough to know that most bull barrels are better for range work. When she took it apart, I was instantly in love with it. Needless to say I brought it home.

I will say this is probably my favorite rifle so far. The rifle came with a Bushnell Scope Chief VI Scope that is 3x9x40. When I bought the gun, I had assumed I would change the scope for something better. Well That is not happening. The scope is excellent. This is also one very accurate rifle. The single action shell ejector is something to see as well as it will kick the spent shell casing 20 feet behind you. I quickly learned to get my face out of the way.

After some research, this model comes in many different calibers, and even with shotgun barrels. Am I correct in assuming I may be able to find a shotgun barrel for this gun, and it should work?

The odd shaped butt is hollow and can be used to store extra rounds, a survival/cleaning kit, or anything you want that will fit in the space.

Simple break action single shot. Note the shell extractor on the bottom of the chamber.


Unscrew this knob on the fore-stock to remove it. This allows the rifle to be taken apart easily.


Here is the hollow storage compartment. I have noticed there is no rubber seal..so not water proof. Zip lock bags will fix this easily.




Here, the for-stock is removed. There is even some storage space hidden inside the for-stock under the barrel.


Easy storage in a backpack, etc...

These are nifty little rifles! when storing articles inside the forearm, be sure the won't swell if wet. The forearm tension is one of accuracy sensitive areas of all the NEF rifles. I don't have any idea on how much fitting is required for spare barrels. ENJOY!

The operative word is 'made'. NEF got bought and doesn't make anything anymore.

It would make a cool camping rifle.
As stated, i wouldn't put anything in the fore stock
but would maybe keep some small things in the butt stock.

It is a nice little rifle for its purposes. I don't know that I would have selected it as an alternative to an AR because the ARs are expensive. Seems like an apples/oranges situation. A bicycle costs less than a motorcycle.

I have seen this action-type in the past with .410 shotgun bbls and a shorter stock called a Snake Charmer, IIRC. Don't know if accessory bbls are available. Maybe Numrich?

I have this rifle chambered in .45 colt/410. Comes with a screw in choke for the 410 loads.

NEF was bought by Harrington & Richardson. H&R still makes the survivor and you can order parts from them. Not sure if they will sell you just the barrel.

Not no more.....Remington bought 'em, and closed the doors a few months ago.......Parts are probably available as long as they have stock, after that, who knows?

A great place to look for info on NEF & H&R rifles is Greybeards outdoor forum. There is an active forum devoted to these rifles , how to fit barrels and get the best accuracy out of them.

Back when I did a bunch of backpacking, an H&R Handi-Rifle in .22 Hornet came along every time. Super-accurate, easy to pack, and rifle and ammo were really light. I miss that scratched-up old rifle...

I placed a call to Marington & RichNEF last week. No new barrels, no old stock, no soup for you.

Too bad. I had a two-barrel set from H&R in the 70s (.22 Hornet/20 Gauge) that is on my "wish I'd kept it" list. My MS deer rifle is a Handi-Rifle in .35 Whelen and I was hoping I could add a .22 Hornet and a shotgun barrel. No dice.

Thanks for the info. I was not aware that Remington had bought them out and are closing the line. Makes me all the more happier that I found this one needing a home.
