Default Have I gone knife crazy?

I found out after I bought a few (at retail) that there's (much) better prices from wholesalers but they have a minimum amount that you have to buy. Since I like collecting knives I thought no problem and I wanted some full tang fixed blade knives for the collection. It's the three on the bottom (includes sheaths) and got a few folders to meet the minimum.

While I prefer more old fashioned knives, as long as you are not stressing your budget collecting what you like is not crazy. Knife collecting is a lot less expensive than gun collecting. That makes it saner.

True, I cannot afford collecting guns nor have room for them.

I also collect DVD movies and I have 898 so far.

I was raised in TX, and enjoy studying early TX history. I collect mostly bowie knives. I have a few others. I carry an SOG, with a black 4" blade. It is a fast open knife. I have some CRKT knives, and other SOG knives. I credit A.G. Russell with my interest in collecting knives.

Third from right is my SOG Flash II.

Third from left is the Colt with D2 blade and G10 handle... 15 bucks.

SOMETIMES, it is less expensive. I have 3 knives in my safe that exceed $1000 each with one being worth 5 times that figure. There are only a few old Smith's or Winchesters in my safe that exceed the $1000 mark.

It is all relative. I started collecting antique folders and US military knives a few decades ago. My wife wrote up the inventory on each when purchased. A few years ago I purchased a nice WW2 Kabar Mark 2 USMC knife. The wife logged it in and realized it was my 12th Mark 2, my 4th USMC, and my 500th knife. She thought it was time to start thinning the herd. I am now down to just over 400. I am making progress.

Just starting a collection at my ripe age. My best sheath knife is a good one though. A 1966 made Puma Skinner. The old carbon steel from what I have read. Price was $25 back in 67 when I bought it! Only folders are a Sog Trident tanto and a Gerber freeman. Need a couple more quality jobs. No Junk!!!!

If the blade reads, Pumaster stahl, it is carbon steel. If it reads Inox, it's stainless. Some are also marked in English as Stainless.

It is better to have a few really good knives than a lot of junk.

If you want to get a real bad habit, try collecting Jimmy Lile button lock folding hunters. They usually start at $ 1500.

No way I'm gonna pay high dollars for knives. What I have are decent enough and if I lose 'em no biggie. Some of them are for novelty.

The one on the left end is an HK Turmoil OTF and sells for $185-$200 but I grabbed it for $120 on sale. That's the only expensive knife I have and I barely carry it because it's so slim that I could lose it easily.

Thanks for reply Texas. Checked against the Puma chart and mine was made in January of 66 according to the codes. Good purchase for $25 back then. Recall eyeballin the White Hunter but was short and bought the Skinner. Goin for good money on Flea Bay for the vintage jobs. Glad I kept it quite mint. Want to pass it on to my son.

I might weaken, but so far, in current dollars my price limit is $110 O.T.D. More than that won't buy a knife that will cut anything better and they'd just sit in the safe. Who'd take a $200 knife out to the salt water to clean a salmon? In a belt pouch knives are pretty safe but pocket knives are always at risk of being lost.

However, if a guy enjoys keeping an expensive one for show and tell I'll enjoy the looking.

Some of the most interesting knives can be had for under $20. I have accumulated some inexpensive European folders, as well as some fixed blades: Opinel, douk-douk, Mora, Mercator, MAM, Higo no Kami, Marttiini, Svord. Opinel and Mora are the best known. These are working and EDC knives.

Rough Rider makes some very nice traditional slip-joint knives, with quality roughly on a par with Case, priced under $20, and many under $10. These have excellent fit and finish, and come quite sharp from the factory, with decent steel. They are a good way to become familiar with the huge variety of patterns available without breaking the bank or waiting for one of Great Eastern's limited runs.

I have some more expensive knives, too, but nothing over about $125.00. There are some pretty nice knives, but my Moras and Opinels cut just as well, if not better.

No they're either Mtech or Tac-Force. Most of the knives are one or the other except for two that are a SOG Flash II and an HK Turmoil.

Oh yeah, and a Colt.

They're pretty decent budget knives.

Never considered myself a collector, till I looked at the bagful I've got downstairs. I stay away from expensive collectibles. The one's in my stable are all working knives, ones that I can carry and work with. The last half-dozen have been Kershaws. Good bang for the buck, IMHO.

Those are better grades along with SOG, Buck, S&W, Case to name a few. The ones I have are cheaper steel that's easy to sharpen and easy to dull. The HK Turmoil and the Colt are D2 steel which is good steel. The fixed blades I have are 440C which is good too.

The rest are 440As and 10 series.

Well, unless you're like me and go for Randall, Benchmade, Emerson, etc. Then it's only a little less expensive, and sometimes more expensive. . .

The HK Turmoil is a Benchmade and it is certainly well made. I wanted the Benchmade Infidel but $400? Ouch!
