Default SAVAGE A-17

My wife keeps bugging me to buy a Savage A17 semi-auto rifle in 17 HMR. I'll confess autos in shotguns, rifles and pistols aren't my preference. She out shoots me with the S&W 5906 and the Ruger Mini 14 (no I ain't mad or jealous). Darn happy to have a wife that understands the need for guns and our 2nd Amendment. Let me re-phrase that "ecstatic."

Mostly is the Savage "plastic" rifle of decent quality and worth the small investment? I like the price of the ammo...

Not being a scope expert please advise:

If the answers come back mostly yes "Get her one" what reasonably priced scope should be installed please? I really want to keep this project,if it happens, as simple and frugal as possible with decent quality. This discussion has been going on for several months since she saw it in American Rifleman.

Her tenacity is...well...uh, why I love her but a .17...uh boy.

Thank you in advance for your help.

I posed a similar question, but couldn't wait for an answer. There's a mini-review in post #3

The short of it is that I love the gun; it shoots better out-of-the-box than any rifle I've ever bought.

I eyeballed one at a Gander Mtn. store.
I like the cartridge. I had a CZ bolt action rifle
the 452. It was very accurate. I might end up with
one of these new Savage rifles as well.
Go for it. She's worth it.
Put a nice little 3x9 Nikon on it for around 150-170
and that would be a fun rifle.

Thanks so much you guys. I tried a search last night and had no luck. Sounds like a fun gun and she'll love it!

Much appreciation for your help!

Thank you for the support (which I fully expected!) and mostly for the advice. Last Friday night I went to Cabela's and came home with an A17 ($375.00) and a Nikon 3x9 40 Buckmaster II scope (130.00) and a box of 200 rounds , and spare mag , and a .17 brush , and a sling and...ya know the story.

Thank you all! Saturday we head North for sighting in and new rifle and old revolver practice...YA!! It (A17) darn sure ain't fancy...but should be fun.

Now the revolver is a Smith of course...
