Default 1911 Photos anybody?

I got a new computer at Christmas. While switch from PC to my new iMac I was rooting around in my collection of photos. I have been wanting to go shoot some of my 1911's, so until I can do that, I'll post a photo. Here are a Wilson CQB and a Kimber Warrior:

A Springfield that started out as a GI model and I did all the work myself other than the finish and the milling of the slide for the Bomar's.

Rock Island Armory compact in .45 acp. Had to install the beavertail and sights on this one.

Colt Gold Cup series 70, with Kart barrel and a whole bunch of work done by an area gunsmith back in the 80's.

RIA Compact in 9mm. Using this as came from the factory. (Great gun).

I only have a couple left.

A Delta Elite that was worked over by Ted Yost about 10 years ago now and a surprisingly nice budget gun, the RIA.

I’ve been looking for a WWI GI M1911 that still had a good amount of finish remaining (that I could afford) for probably 20 years. I’ve had a few nice GI shooters along the way. This 1918 Colt with a 1917 holster showed up the day before yesterday and I jumped on it. As far as I can tell the only thing that’s been done to it is the re-staking of one of the grip screw bushings.

Default A 1911 of a little different flavor

Just picked this up a couple weeks ago.
Rock island Armory 22 TCM/9mm(2 barrels, 2 springs)
The only 1911 I own at the moment.
After only putting 100+ rounds thru this one, I might be inclined to pick up another, more conventional one, if it just happened to catch my eye in a moment of weakness.

Currently my only 1911 and she's been a good one.

A past 1911 project, affectionately known as "big ugly".

An officers model I picked up and did the same treatment on.

It's been quite a few years since I took staged photos of this gun and quite a few were lost when a computer crashed, but I'll post what I have, along with a bit of it's story.

My father was never interested in hunting and although he could not be termed a “gun guy”, he made sure I had a BB or pellet gun when I was young and always encouraged my hunting and shooting endeavors as I grew. Years later I did my best to return the favor and nudge him into hunting with me. Although we would shoot together on occasion, I was never fully successful and he was content to limit his hunting to eliminating the sparrows and starlings that tried to nest under the eaves of his house with an old Crosman air rifle I gave him one Christmas.

Most of the firearms I inherited upon his death were those I gave him as gifts over the years, the glaring exception being this Remington Rand 1911A1 that he carried in WWII while he served as a sergeant with the 114th, 44th Infantry Division, and saw action in France, Germany and Austria. A few other guns came back with him from the war, including a German drilling, but the .45 was the only one he kept, a clear testament to its importance to him.

He, like many WWII vets, disliked reliving his memories of the war and would seldom go into any details of his service, even when, as a kid, I would beg for stories. He did explain this 1911 was not issued to him but was recovered from the body of a fallen friend, carried the rest of the war, then returned to the States with him on the Queen Elizabeth, upon the end of hostilities. Much of what I know of the history of the "Fighting 44th" I have researched since his death. 44th Infantry Division - United States is a great resource for anyone interested.

The Remington Rand spent many years in his nightstand drawer, where I would often sneak it out when I got home from school. I could field strip and reassemble that pistol faster than any GI by the time I was 10, long before he actually let me shoot it. Looking back, I realized long ago my fascination with firearms, handguns in particular, began with this pistol. I shot this gun in IPSC competition one season while waiting for a custom 1911 to be built, and took great pleasure when I was able to beat those with fancy $2000 race guns. Years later, when the time came to put down a canine companion, out of many choices available, it's the gun I reached for.

I consider the pistol mostly retired now, but every Memorial weekend I slip it out of the safe and myself, my wife, and my twin daughters run a few magazines of hardball through the old warhorse in remembrance. They are all well aware of it's heirloom status, all else I own are just...guns.

Springfield Armory GI Champion. I had their custom shop put three dot sights on it and enlarge the ejection port.

Stranglehold, great pictures and a great story! Thanks for sharing.

I have posted this before, but it fits well here. This WWI 1911 (made in 1917) is in my family, but not in my possession yet. It will be one day, when my father-in-law decides to "sell" it to me. I will pay him a fair market value for it, but the money will go into an account for my son's education. So it is a win-win for everyone.

The gun is resting on my grandfather's WWI uniform next to his helmet. He certainly would have carried one like it, but this one was not his. I use this picture as the background on my computer. I included his ID and a photo of him, probably in France, just to add more for the history buffs.

Here is another of mine...my current favorite. I bought this Combat Elite in 1987. It had fixed sites, a plastic MSH, spur hammer, collet bushing, rubber Pachmayr grips, poor trigger, etc. I shot tens of thousands of rounds through it, breaking the slide stop lever and the thumb safety in the process, though at different times. Other parts were worn, lots of holster wear, etc. Decided to send it to Wilson. The only mod it had was adjustable Millet sites (no longer made). I had them swap out most parts for "bullet proof" (read: non-MIM) parts, including a beaver tail, speed chute, and commander hammer. Wilson added a bushing less barrel as well. They re-polished the flats of the frame, and bead blasted the curves. Turnbull re-blued the slide. I added elk grip panels from Eagle. Now it shoots better than ever, with looks to boot!. Hope you like it:

I think John M. Browning would be pleased, stunned and awed in equal measure by how beloved and advanced his creation has become. How many products made over 100 years ago are still being used in essentially the same form?

Great photos here! I like the fact that so many S&W users like 1911s as well. Great classics.
