These two are my keepers. The Model 11 isn't even marked as such, it was made in 1909, and they didn't start stamping that on them until 1911. It's one of my pieces of gun history, in that JMB was alive and well when it was made, and money from the sale of my gun went into his pocket from the deal he made with Remington. The Wingmaster is my favorite shotgun of all time, and I turned a bird gun into this.

Actually, 2 3/4".

BTW: Since, like 98% of the members here I am way too old for combat, I supposed the intention here was for a HD shotgun!

Let me start out by saying I have never owned a shotgun but have had exposure to a good few. I have used a 16" Winchester .44 magnum lever action as a house gun in the past.

I've used various shotguns many of which I don't recall the model number, from memory, the Remington 870 and 1100 birdgun, Winchester 1200/1300 Defender, Mossbergs, Browning, Atis, the SPAS 15 and the South African Protecta with the revolver type magazine (manual Striker automatic shotgun) to name a few. Also a few side by side and under/over shotguns.

Of all the guns I liked the Winchester Defenders most, I liked the capacity and the slick action of the non stainless guns. Maybe it was the feel of the wooden furniture. I know many swear by the stronger 870s but I found the Winchester more comfortable and natural for me. I really liked it and shot well with it. Just my 2c.

Damn right! Not only does it eject from the bottom (keeping dirt out of the action), but it takes DECADES for an Ithaca 37 to begin to malfunction. My dad had one with all of the bluing gone, and it STILL went "bang" every time you pulled the trigger. Gun shops rarely have to fix them, unless the owner is a total numbskull who never cleaned it or oiled it. The gun was mostly designed by John Browning, with a few small changes made by others.

Mine is also a Win1300.
When I got it, it was set up with dual pistol grips.
I changed it to a folding stock and picatinny slide.

As a user or a collectible? Makes a big difference, as there are some very desirable and valuable military marked shotguns. As a user (at least for my personal preference), probably a Winchester Model 1200 military version. Second choice would be an Ithaca 37. I have little use for anything newer than about 1970.

My bedside gun is an 870 with an extended magazine, a 18 1/2" barrel and the full wood stock. When pumping a round into the chamber it makes a statement that translates to all know languages...

If, heaven forbid, I ever have to use it, I know how to patch drywall and mop floors.

My shotgun for things that go bump in the middle of the night is a Mossie 590 12 gauge. It has an 18 tube and it holds 9 shots total, set to fire 4 00s and then 3 slugs! A bandoleer is next to gun with lots of reloads. Full stock no hard to control pistol grip only as some Rambo’s prefer!

We live a 1/4 mile off the road in a no cell zone and very sporadic public safety communications. That means in plain English if our home phone is down we cannot make a call for the cavalry to come. On our own and this gun loaded with 00 buck & slugs will take care of human trash or the bears that live up here with us in the boonies.

Note we are very rural and our choice of 00 and slugs might not work well with other people. A couple handguns are close so the wife can have one while I tend to the shotgun.

I have a short barreled M37 with rifle sights and also a Remington 1100 Special Field. I would be comfortable grabbing either one. Also have numerous other shotguns including a Winchester 1200, but these 2 have the short barrels.

I carried my personal 1897 Winchester in my patrol car for several years. I'm also fond of the Ithaca pump M37 and the Remington 870.

I have two sons, nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. My supply of firearms has dwindled as they grew up and moved away. I have one shotgun left.

Remington 870 "Sportsman 12" model, plain walnut stock, parkerized exterior finish, 12-gauge 3" chamber, 21" barrel with vent rib and RemChoke. I have fitted it for a carry sling, otherwise it remains as manufactured. I have screw-in chokes of IC, Modified, Full, and a Hasting Extra-full Turkey Choke.

This shotgun has won every turkey shoot it has been used in, not only by myself but by a dozen others.

It sits peacefully in my house with the IC choke tube installed and the magazine loaded with 2-3/4" magnum loads of BB-shot. I have hunted doves, quail, and pheasants with various loads and choke tubes, and it does everything I require of a shotgun every time I ask it to do so.

Nothing fancy, just hard core solid performance every time. On a road trip it remains quietly available in the trunk of the car or behind the seat of the truck.

In my bedroom is former Akron PD 870 with a Surefire light mounted to the end of the standard mag tube. There is a nylon ammo sock on the butt stock. Since I live in a condo community now, all the ammo is ounce and an 1/8 high brass 7.5's at 1325 fps.

BUT my favorite is a 1904 Winchester model 1897 Takedown with a 18 1/8 barrel and a 6 round follower/spring set up. It will fire six in less than 2 seconds. The sound of the action racking, is the sound all other shotguns aspire to emulate!

Mossberg 500 and 590
The 500 is shorter, lighter and has better balance so it has an edge over the 590 IMHO...

I'm retired and live alone in a one-bedroom apartment. I'm quite happy with an old, worn Stevens side-by-side twelve gauge, sawed to twenty inches. Like fdw, I prefer #4 buck.

I figure the chances of my being in a running gunfight and needing a lot of ammo are minuscule, and I've never gone in for the "tactical" stuff.

I bought twp of the rem 870 police turn in's and the things were covered with rust. Took about 8 hours each with oil and 4/0 0000 fine steel wool to get the rust off. Sanded down both the forend and buttstock, sealed them with sanding sealer and about 6 coats of g96 linspeed oil finnish. Came out pretty good. old recoil pad had ossified and replaced it with one from remington. The other one has all the rust off and awaiting to be refinished. One is a 20" bbl the other has the 22" bbl. And both came with the mag extensions. Frank

I have a new Rock Island M-5 riot. It is based on the old HS riot. Nice. Just saw a replacement long tube online tonight. Now I'm thinking.

Years ago I had a Win M-12 riot. Another one I should have kept. Parkerized and had the flaming pot.

One of my old M-12's would work too.

Sorry, I don't have any pics handy, but I have a nice Benelli M2, a Beretta 1201 and a Mossburg 590A1 18", to which I added an extension. It has tritium ghost ring sighgts and sits in the corner of my bedroom as my SHTF big gun, with that Winchester PDX load and more in a Mesa side saddle. Shotguns are great! The Benelli is set up for 3 gun with a 24" vent rib barrel and matching extension. It handles the cheap Walmart target loads really well also.

Nice hardware, MAJPATT.

Winchester Trench Broom gets honorable mention for its cool factor, long bayonet and slam fire ability,

Favorite for many years was the Ithaca Model 37 (center) mainly due to the bottom load bottom eject , light weight and slam fire ability Downs are very little folding stock choices , magazine cannot be extended and single pump carrier arm,

Current favorite is this Remington 870 3" Magnum mainly because of its dual pump carrier arms (Vs Ithacas single) top folding stock and availability of aftermarket parts

My 12g AOW. Mossberg 500 with 8" barrel. Mag tube holds 3. Very concealable. Great bedside weapon

Here she is with her currently worn grip/foregrip combo. And her big sisters....big Sisters are strategically placed in the house.

Leatherhead23

For some reason, the system is not allowing me to reply to you post #42 with a quote. Anyway, is that Moss 500, a legal gun, with an 8" barrel? I thought Federal Law was a minimum of 18" on a shotgun.

Yessir..it's an NFA weapon. I have a tax stamp for it.

It's considered an Any Other Weapon...AOW. It is not considered a Short Barreled Shotgun..(SBS) because it is not meant to be shouldered. It cannot ever have a stock put on it.

Johnny flake, you can compare that to my 14 inch Scattergun Technologies with stock in post #38 which is registered with ATF NFA Branch as a Short Barrelled Shotgun. I paid a $200 tax stamp to make the SBS, whereas leatherhead23 only had to pay a $5 tax stamp for an AOW.

That's interesting guys, I was unaware of that.

After I posted the above, it came to me that there was a possibility, that the weapon had to be registered as a handgun, like the short barreled assault rifles are.

I noticed from a couple of photos above that South Carolina must have some REALLY steep hills.

My issue is a Remington 870 with a 14 inch barrel with Trijicon night rifle sights. Great package.

At the risk of sounding stupid...

When using an Ithaca 37- how does the next shell in the tube not interfere with the ejection of the empty? I'm assuming the same port is used.

A Remington 870 Turkey gun with tub extension added for 3 gun. Next to it is one of my SKSs.

I soon added an ATI heatshield and ghost ring combo after burning my hand off the barrel.

My backup is a Hatsan 14" Optima.
