Default High-Standard

I have a chance to buy a High Standard
" The Victor " Blued New in Box "
In the Blue Book it says they are very
rare. but they are on the auctions sites
and run from 500/1400 dollars
Not sure how to approach this one.
The seller is asking 900.00
I don't have pictures and won't till
Monday. I have bought guns from
this person before and they have always
been Just as was stated or better.

IMO 900 is a price where I would be seriously interested and want to know more.
The Victor is the model to have and was a favorite of bullseye shooters.
There are a few things that go into what it's worth.
Is it a Hamden or Hartford gun ?
Is it unmolested ?
I also believe the prices on these have peaked, the number of guys that know what they are and are willing to pay top dollar is shrinking.
There are also alternatives that don't have the ergonomic issues.
Magazines are finicky, expensive and hard to find
Pics would be helpful.

There are several variations of the Victor. What grip configuration and series#, and what barrel length and barrel rib style will have a direct impact on pricing.
There are some very rare variations.
Hi-Standard produced the Victor in an assortment of available barrel configurations: 4.5" steel vent rib, 5.5" steel vent rib, 4.5" aluminum vent rib, 5.5" aluminum vent rib, 4.5" aluminum solid rib, 5.5" aluminum solid rib.

Are you sure it's "The Victor" and not "Victor"? NIB and not LNIB?
It's just hard to believe. 4.5" or 5.5"?

Default The Victor

Won't know about the barrel configuration till Monday
I will get a chance at pictures then too. Others are looking
and I may have to move on a wing and a prayer.
They state 100% NIB " The Victor " Wood, Blue,
It's that I know this guy and he knows guns. Has never
mis-lead and has always been better informed than
me. Is there a diffrence in the titles ? One being Victor
and the other being " The Victor " ? I don't know
Thank you for all the help. I did buy a Md 19 Blued
snubby NIB. I will post pictures Sunday It's to nice for
me to carry so it went in the safe.

With "The Victor" rolled marked on the barrel the pistol is a Hamden Manufactured piece. Production later moved to E.Hartford (1977) and shortly after the frames were roll marked "Victor". Many believe (as I) that the Hamden guns are better built.

If I'm not mistaken there have been recent production High Standards
marked as Victor models. Just from what I have read the new
production guns are not made by the original company and are a far
cry from the original quality. Better make very sure of what you are
buying before you spend your money.

They are very much collectable. I just traded an old (1942) model H-B . Unlike the Model B, It had an exposed hammer . A good Web site if you are looking for good info on the High Standard is Rimfirecentral.com.

Gun Digest gives Texas as the location of the current High Standard
co. I remember reading about someone acquiring the rights to the High
Standard brand name and producing, or having produced, new guns
with the High Standard name. Seems like it was the same company
that sold the stainless steel Luger reproductions. According to my 2015
Gun Digest one of the guns being sold carries the Victor name.
If that's what you're looking at then realize that collector value is
zero and very likely to remain so.

Just look at the right side of the barrel. If it says Hamden or E.Hartford you should be good to go.

I did a little more looking and current production is in Houston TX, at
least that's what it says on their web site and is marked on the right
side of the receiver. It is the same company that markets the AMT and
Interarms guns. From the information and pics on the web site the new
High Standards now have some components that are cast, including
the receiver. Cast components aren't necessarily a bad thing, look
at Ruger. If the Victor you're looking at is an original High Standard
it will be marked as mentioned above, Hamden or Hartford. If it's
recent production it will be marked Houston TX. They are not the same.

Nice score,
Any Hamden pistol would be a nice addition to anyones collection. Your's is a more commonly seen model with the 5 1/2" aluminum vent rib barrel, but still a very nice pistol!
I hope you are going to shoot it!

That looks like a very nice piece.
I am a shooter and not a collector, I would only buy one it to shoot.
I would pay $1,000 - $1,250 for something that nice.
I strongly suspect there are many who would pay more.

Wow! Great information here. I own one that is in my safe and have to go look to see what it is. It is a round heavy 4.5 in barrel that shoots great! I do not recall the vent rib. Have to check. Again, thanks for the great info. High Standard had some really fine pistols. A friend of mine has an old 9 shot 22 revolver that looks like a fine 6 inch barrel round butt 38. It must be 60 years old. Shoots great.

I have a Hamden gun, I've had it since about 1981, and not considering getting rid of it at any time in the future. The triggers on the HS's are legend. "Breaks like a glass rod". They can be finicky about ammo, and prefer 40 gr standard velocity "target" ammo.

I was a bit skeptical, but very glad to be proved wrong. Nicely done. Don't dare sell it. Shoot the snot out of it. Standard velocity .22, not Mini-Mags.
How many mags? The mags can be fussy, but easily adjusted. all kinds of info, if needed, here, and YouTube.

Have one just like it, very accurate a total joy. As good as they get, very close to the S&W Mod 41 when it comes to accuracy - naturally you have to feed it what it likes.

Congratulations!

Here is mine, had a little custom work done on her that made us better friends.

Nice find.

Someone posted that mags were tough to find. FYI, I bought a few from Brownell's just six months back. Looked the same as the mags in a few of the older HS's I have from the 70's and 80's. Reasonably priced too.
