Used leveractions
Rant mode: Why are there NO used leveraction rifles available when i want one?
Have been looking for a .44-40 for years now
New ones, no problem. Well not really $2000, is not what i can spare

What in the world would you shoot with a .44/40 in Sweden? Too small for elk, and not really right for roe deer!
Possibly you could find a Winchester or Marlin; they have made at least a few in the last few years. There must be some way to get a rifle into Sweden, there sure are a lot coming out! Try Simpson's of Galesburg, IL. They import a lot of used guns from Sweden; they may have a connection there who could help you.

Mainly steelplates
My first goal is to shoot Cowboy action with it. I had a friend who shot
blackpowder matches with a Uberti 1866 that was going to lend it to me.
So i got me some 1000 rounds of .44-40. Reloading tools and molds for casting.
Well guess what? No more friend, and no gun to lend
Most Cowboys here don't shoot blackpowder like me
and sharing guns at a match could be problematic due to the blackpowder fouling

Look for a used marlin in 444 marlin or used win big boar in 375 win. Either of these will take down a moose. Both can be loaded with cast bullets for lighter game. Think of the 375 win as a 38-55 on steroids as pressures can run as high as 50k but you can load 38-55 cast bullets in this cartridge as well.As a matter of fact if you are looking to use low power loads in the 375 win then you can use38-55 cases in the 375 win as sometimes 375 win cases can be difficult to find. Could you talk to one of the firearm distributors or importers in Sweden? It might be a good idea to network and make contacts with them, seeking their direction? They might have access to used imports but you would need to inquire.

I'm not planing to use it for hunting, just Cowboy action.
That's why it need to be in a pistol caliber.
I can take down every Swedish game with my 6.5x55 Swedish mauser

The Winchester 92 was originally designed by John Browning for black powder cartridges - .32-20, .38-40, and .44-40. I've never owned one, but I see no reason why it wouldn't function for Cowboy Action shooting. I have shot black in my Uberti 1866 replica. The 92 is stronger action and the ones I've seen at matches work very well with black or smokeless.
I am very fond of my two 6.5x55 Swedish Mausers!

Qball, look for one of the older marlins with the JM stamp on the barrel, Model1894 carbines are available in 357 magnum or 44 magnum. There used to be some in 25-20 and 32-20 but they are kinda few and far between. Frank

Hi,
This is an old original from 1892 ! I think is not the best for Cowboy action schooting.

My ego say that it (the caliber) has to start with a .4
I'm not shooting Cowboy action for to win, just look cool.
And the more blackpowder i can stuff in to the case, the better
A .44mag could work, might be able to trade all my .44-40 cases to .44mag's instead.

The price on that gun is 101,30 EUR. 101 Euros? That's about 120 bucks. Am I reading that price wrong? Are guns THAT MUCH cheaper in Europe?

That first one you were looking at - the serial number puts it to 1906, or thereabouts (the published Winchester SN lists are incorrect, but close). That's into the smokeless age, so should certainly be safe for black. Unless it's just slap-dab wore out from being 110 years old.
That last one - the 120 year commemorative - it would be so cool to see someone competing with that. Of course, first shell through it and the value drops 500 dollars, but it would still be cool to see.

Well... it is an auction, any thing can happen.
Had it been in mint condition or a rare caliber, the bidding should look quite different though

I would never have expected lever action rifles in pistol calibers to be popular in Sweden. But then I confess ignorance about what's popular with Swedish shooters.
If you ever get to the U.S. and pass through the Little Rock area stop by and you're welcome to shoot mine.
No 44-40s though...

Cowboy Action shooting is quite fun and there are a few diehard fans here
We use the SASS rules, adapted to Swedish laws that is.
And SASS rules that for main event only pistol caliber
leveraction or slide action rifles may be used.
Unfortunatly the one's that have a leveraction don't part with it
And if i ever visit USA, you will be the first i'll call

To the OP:
I can feel your pain.
I am in the U.S., and even here it is really hard to find a good vintage Winchester Mod. 1892 in .44-40. Even the ones that are worn out are priced to the sky. Those rifles were used, and used hard every day. The owners didn't buy them to admire, but to use.
I searched off and on for several years - mainly on GunBroker. Just a couple months ago I finally found a very nice Win. Mod. 92 in .44-40 at a fair price. Mine was made in 1919. Now it is with me, and I am glad to have it. With its coarse "buckhorn" sights I can shoot 5 shots into 3-1/4" at 100 yards. That's good accuracy.
Finding one and getting it to Sweden is obviously more difficult than my search. Keep looking. Good luck. If you get one you will love it. They are fantastic.

Thank's Curl.
To ad insult to injury, i had a Rossi .45 that i had to sell.
Bought it for $625
Only levers in .44-40 avalible now are Winchester 94's at about $425
The Commemorative ones
Not a single used leveraction in sight when i need it.
I'll probably have to get the 94, time to buy before EU put a ban on all guns.

Look's like it's going to be a Winchester 94 LittleBigHorn Commemorative that i'll be shooting this summer.
If i'm lucky i can trade of some tools for it.
A few Dial gauges and micrometers for starters.
Yep, i already know that they are NOT ideal for the .44-40
But it's all i can afford right now
