Colt people need some FAST help!
Quick question I’m looking at tonight what is supposed to be a very good old style Colt Cobra .38 2’’ It comes with original box and it has a hammer shroud. What does the shroud add to the value? Anything about the shroud I should CAREFULLY check out.
Thanks!

If its a Colt shroud, it adds about a $100.

Thank you. Based on what you said would a shroud be identifiable as Colt made.
I only saw pictures and it looked good, if all goes well were supposed to get together tonight! He said the gun was about a 70 vintage!

It should look like this one. This Cobra dates to the mid 50's.

Thanks people!
He IS big word IS supposed to call me back tonight to see about a meet. If I buy the gun due to our state laws,Pistol transfer even though both of us have CCWP, paper work has to be done at a FFL.
So even If I purchase it tonight (assuming he shows) I will not take possession for best guess about 2 weeks. Gun will remain at FFLs.

Why the 2 week wait? Your FFL could use the NICS system, get instant approval. and let you walk out with the gun within a few minutes.

I think that's the gun Jack Ruby used on Oswald. Original factory shrouds are fairly desirable and add value. So would the box, etc. I can't say by how much. You probably would have received better information on the Colt Forum.

update---Bought it.
Again my thanks for your quick help! Met the private seller and the gun was as described, minimum of 90% good chance even a bit better. Ben shot or carried very little!
Box was a little grungy on the outside but the interior was very good. The box was serial numbered to the gun, and it stated hammer shroud on the label. Yes it had the Colt on the right side. Did general Colt revolver tests and all was very good.
Like I stated do to the peculiarities of NY law it will be a couple weeks before I can take the gun home from the FFL where it had to be stored. Just good common sense gun control you know!

Sounds like a cool gun! Congrats! The NY wait time varies county to county. If we can meet at FFL and get to the county seat to have our permit amended and back to the FFL we can take possession the same day. For me it's at least 1/2 day. No matter how the transfer, new, used, it means a trip to the county courthouse and a $6 fee. I know it's not like a gun friendly state but it's what we do, ya get used to it.
Stay safe, John

New Yawk? That's that other country at the bottom of the state that makes all the rules for us country boys in New York (the rest of the state). It ain't New Yawk here!
Stay safe, John

Thanks!
I have been playing the pistol permit game here since 1972. When I first started out in Albany County if you had your paper work filled out the people at county clerk would processes it and have you back outside in 5 minutes. Now it’s about a week minimum where I now live and my wife just waited 3 weeks to get a amendment,. That went over the Christmas/ New year Holiday. They claim they are very busy!

Congrats!!! That's a pretty cool find and very useable revolver, even by today's standards.
