Nice I wanted one of the lever guns, but settled on a couple of early 110Ls, one in .243 and one in .30-06:

I have a fairly nice early 1920s lever takedown in .303 Savage with a Marble tang sight. Ammo is tough to find, but cases can easily be formed from .30-30 brass (which is slightly smaller in diameter at the base). I have formed hundreds of them.

I have an old 99G takedown lever gun in .30/30 and a Model 23AA in .22 with one of the prettiest stocks I've seen on any .22. That one will hold well under an inch at 50 yds. all day long with the ammo it likes. It's also a terrific prairie dog rifle.

Over the years I've had about 30 Savage rifles. Currently, I'm at 7; 3 10/110's, a 340 in 22 Hornet, which has out shot every other Hornet rifle I've owned and 3 Model 24's. The one I regret not buying was a 99 take down in 303 with a second barrel in 410 2 1/2" shotgun.

I've had 5 other 340's; 3 other 22 Hornets and 2 in 30-30, and have been surprised at how well they all have shot.

My second son is left handed, and I found a lefty 110 bull barrel in 223 used with a scope for $200 OTD right after he came home from the USMC. I gave it to him as a coming home / birthday present. I zeroed the scope at 200 yards with a 46 grain SP Winchester ammo, had it shooting in the 1/2" @ 200 range.

The only Savage I ever saw that didn't shoot well was a late Model 24 in 223 over 12 Gauge, it had a visibly bent rifle barrel from the factory, and CS replaced the gun.

Gaze with fear and wonder upon the mighty .22 magnum. Single-shot of course, because that's all I ever need (I wish )

"The one I regret not buying was a 99 take down in 303 with a second barrel in 410 2 1/2" shotgun."

The takedown 99s were available with an auxiliary .410 barrel, and I have seen several of them. I believe that some came from the factory with both barrels as a set. Of course, with the .410 barrel, the 99 had to be used in single loading mode, as shotshells would not feed through the somewhat complex rotary magazine system.

Default Great Classics

I've owned several Savage 99s and they are deer hunting classics. However, accuracy can vary. While some report guns capable of holding a one-inch group across the 100-yard bench, I was never so lucky. Also, my Savage 99F in .308 killed at both ends.

At the moment, I'm sitting on a few boxes of ammo and a new set of reloading dies in .300 Savage for the day when another Model 99 graces my gun safe.

For those with .300 Savage rifles, .300 Savage ammo is somewhat difficult to find. However, cases are easily made from .308 brass. One pass through a .300 FL sizing die followed by neck shortening and trimming is all that is needed. I have found that Federal cases have too much neck wall thickness, but other brands are OK, as is military 7.62 NATO brass. Some may know that the .300 Savage was the inspiration for the 7.62 NATO/.308 Winchester, and is very similar to those, except for having a very short neck. Ballistics and loading data are essentially the same.

The 1928 .300 EG from above.
100 yards off the bench with an aperture rear sight.
Not quite a 1" group, but good enough:

I have two Savage Model 99G takedowns at this time. One in 250-3000 Savage and one in 300 Savage.

Inherited a M99 in .300 from my paternal GF. He lived in Washington state from the 1920's 'til his death in the late 70's. He was a big hunter and supposedly took loads of deer and elk with it. Has an ancient Redfield rear peep on it.
I took one Virginia whitetail with it years ago and now it sits in the safe.

A rifle design ahead of it's time.

This a rather poor picture of my pride and joy, a first year .250/3000, hand delivered to the corporate secretary of Savage.

And just a working deer rifle, an EG in .300

Don't have pictures of my rarest one, an octagon 1895, one of about 5000 built by Marlin for Savage before manufacturing started.

The .300 Savage is an interesting cartridge with a history. It came onto the market right after WWI. Most of the returning Doughboys were very familiar with the .30-'06, and Savage thought it would be ideal to have a powerful .30 cartridge, but shortened so that it would fit in the Model 99 action, to sell to them as a hunting rifle. So the .300 Savage started life as a shortened .30-'06 with near-equivalent ballistics. After WWII, the U. S. Army decided that it needed a rifle which would fire a shorter and more compact cartridge than the .30-'06, and the .300 Savage fit the bill. After some development and evaluation, they decided that the .300 Savage needed a longer neck to better support the bullet when used in automatic weapons, so that's what they did to arrive at the 7.62mm NATO case - added a little length to the neck of the .300 Savage case. They also changed the shoulder angle slightly to get better feeding reliability in automatic fire. A surprisingly large number of sporting rifles have been chambered in the .300 Savage, but the .308 has pretty well displaced it at present. I'm not sure that any factory still chambers their rifles in .300 Savage. Moral is, if a .308 is adequate for whatever you want to hunt, so is a .300 Savage. I wouldn't pass up any good rifle just because it is chambered in .300 Savage.

I've had some Savages, "Savage Anschutz Rifles" Both a 54 action match rifle and a 64 action sporter. Great rifles.

A high school friend of mine had a 99C take-down in 300 Savage. That rifle hit hard at both ends. But my lil' brother borrowed it for deer hunting one year and liked it immensely. He told me about how he took a snap shot at a grouse that flushed out of a big laurel thicket and how the poor bird disappeared in a puff of feathers. Brother spent the rest of the season agonizing over shooting a grouse out of season!
But he always wanted a model 99 in 300 Savage. I found him this one a few years ago for well under $400. The after market recoil pad helped keep the price down:

It didn't seem to kick as hard as I remember so when the opportunity arose a year later, I traded an old 1905 M&P, along with a little cash, for one of my own:

It came with an older Weaver K scope and proved to be more than accurate enough for hunting Whitetails in Penns Woods.

Both rifles are post WWII guns and date from the early 1950s.

I must say that finding 300 Savage ammo can be challenging and on the expensive side. A 20 ct box of modern ammo will run three times the price of a box of 30-30. Being able to reload is a blessing, though the short neck of the 300 makes it something of a challenge.

Big fan here. I have my dad's 1955 .243 Featherweight. It is about 6 1/2 lbs. yet has a full foreend rather than tapered. My dad carved it in the early 60s. Some very nice work of his, I think. My other one is the very popular EG Model. Mines a well used 1948 .300 with 16 notches in the stock from a previous owner. All that was done with the stock open sights. But a friend gave me the Lyman Alaskan scope and Stith (?) mounts, so I had to put them on this one. My dad got it then gave it to me for my 40th birthday. Pictured here with other goodies of my dad's and my '52 Cobra contemporary to the gun. 99s are wonderful rifles.

If you like recoil, you'll love a Remington Model 81 using fully-loaded .300 Savage ammo. I load .300 Savage to the minimum MV required to function the M81 action reliably, probably about .30-30 level. My younger brother, not a small guy, decided that firing one shot from the M81 was enough fun for him.

You are so right about that. My cherished 1949 Remington 81 in .300 kicks much more than my lighter Savage. That entire barrel slamming back each shot is the culprit. but I love it still. I like the 99 and 81 so much, I've often thought of getting a Remington 721 in .300, too, just to get a bolt action in the mix. My friend has one in .300 H&H.

Yes, there is a lot of fast-moving metal mass coming to a sudden stop in the M81's long recoil action. Not so bad for those M8s and M81s in .25, .30, and .32 Remington calibers, but those chambered in .35 Rem and .300 Savage are a different story.

Here's a Model 99R in .300 Savage from 1953 that was upgraded to RS features with a Redfield 70LH receiver sight and sling swivels.

I had a Savage Model 99 made in 1953 that was my Dad's and I have since gave it to my grandson as his first rifle. He killed his first Mule Deer and Cow Elk with it. I do have two Savage bolt action rifles with one being a Model 114 in 270 Win and a Model 14 in 308. I really like them both as they are great shooters.

Several years ago I had my trigger finger dislocated in a mishap
at work. Doc fixed it up and put a plastic guard on it. The next
night my oldman comes home with 81/35 Rem he bought at
work. So we went down to river to shoot it. My OM and bro
cranked of a few rounds and handed me the rifle for my turn.
I laid trigger finger along action and was pulling trigger with
second finger. When I touched it off the bolt came back and
Slammed into the end of my finger. I don't think I have ever
had anything as painful in my life. Required purchase of new shorts.

I've got an 1899 Savage C grade (1/2 Oct-1/2 Rd bbl) in 30-30 w/tang sight and fold down 2 leaf bbl sight. Straight grip stock. Not much finish left but a nice rifle otherwise. Made about 1907 as far as I can figure.

My other 99 is an early 50's 300Sav that came with 9 extra holes drilled & tapped in it for all kinds of scope mts and sights. Bore is perfect!
This is one of the 99's made before they factory drilled and tapped them.Maybe I'll plug up all the holes and resurrect it.

A friend has a 22H/P take-down that's been rebored to 25-35WCF that he's been wanting to sell. Sounds interesting,,,,

I love the 99, but don't have one. This little single-shot is the only Savage I own:

I have a few...mainly because they REALLY shoot!
My 1960's .30-06 M110...

I also have a 1970's Model 99 .308 Win, and several newer Savage bolt actions in .22 LR and .22 Magnum.

I have a 99F in .308, and it handles like a fine shotgun. Nothing I've owned comes to your shoulder so naturally. I also have a MkII FV .22, and a Low Profile Varminter in .223. I have handloaded my 99F down to around .300 Sav. levels and gotten 3 shot groups around an inch. Not bad for an old Featherweight.

I have my Dad's 99 in .308. He bought it in1954. He was left handed and finding a left handed bolt action rifle at that time was hard to do.
The old saying"beware the man with but one gun" was true. I never saw him miss. He loved the Winchester Silvertip ammunition because it performed as intended every time.
I have the last box of that ammo that he bought. There are six rounds left in it. The price tag is still there and reads $2.99
I use this gun to this gun to this day.
