One day the guy in the next lane was shooting something big and loud. I could feel the pressure wave on my face every time he shot. I asked him what he was shooting. He showed me his Desert Eagle .50, and asked me if I wanted to try it. Of course, I took him up on it.
It was impossible not to like the guy. He was probably in his 20's or early 30's, and excited as a 6-year old with a new puppy.
What was it like to shoot? Let's just say I don't need one.

Picture a dumb 10 year old with the neighbors 12 gage double. Backed up to a tree so it wouldn't knock me over. Pulled both triggers at the same time on a dare. The bruise and the pain lasted well over a month. Steve, who was 12, thought it was really funny. Never trusted him again.

Nothing bigger than a .44 Magnum in a handgun; noticeable but not too bad.
I have shot a .375 H & H and a ported .45-70 Marlin Guide Gun off a bench; also not bad. One round offhand from a .458 Ruger #1, that was enough. Anything of that power range fired again would be off a standing bench, with a fully loaded Lead Sled, a PAST recoil shield and several ibuprofen beforehand...

9.3x62, hard to believe it's an acceptable buffalo gun (albeit borderline) very mild in my experience, the everyday 30-06 hurts more.

Largest small arm I've fired, if you count crew served, is an M2 .50 BMG.
Largest handgun: A friend's Contender in 45-70, with one of my 500 grain lead bullet and 65 grs blackpowder Trapdoor loads. It was an eye opener.
Largest blackpowder rifle: My Winchester 1885 in .50-140. Bullet is a 700 grainer with 140 grains of blackpowder.
My son Sean has outpaced me. Here he is shooting a 20mm at Big Sandy.

If it's big bore blackpowder, my son has that beat. Here's a 120mm Chicom mortar he restored for a friend, converted to blackpowder. It fires cement filled juice bottles, one of which can be seen on the ground in front of it. In the previous 20mm post you can also see a shorter bowling ball mortar in the background. Both of these mortars are incredibly loud.

Awww well. I'm sort of boring.
30/06 in a Rifle, Winchester Model 70 to be specific.
44 Magnum in a couple of handguns, Ruger and Smith & Wesson.
12 ga. 3" magnum buckshot out of a Sears/Roebuck pump gun.
That's about it.

For pistols I've owned a 44 Magnum and fired a 50AE Desert Eagle and a Taurus Raging Bull in 454 Casull. All fun guns but more than I need.

Heaviest recoil - 3" 12 gauge slugs out of a security type shotgun. Calculated 44 ft/lbs of recoil energy. Prone position, loop sling. A few shots of these knocked the fiber optic rod out of the rear peep sight. CZ sent me replacements for free but then I found one of the screws holding the sight on sheared so I have a repair to do.
I've toyed with idea of getting a big bore like a 375 H&H to play with but not motivated enough to spend the $.
Handgun - full power 44 mag loads in the Model 69. A bit zestier than say a 4" N frame but OK for 10 shots or so.

This fits in here I think? Back when I went through basic Ft. Ord with the M1 Grand they had us use them with the rifle grenade launchers twice!! OUCH my thigh hurt for three four days.
For rifle 45-70 w/410 shells at 9yrs old. Shoot my friends S/W .44 mag with hand loads 10 grs unique heavy bullet single handed about 10" recoil rise.

Pistols, I have shot most. .22 to 50 S&W including 45-70 in a Contender (14" barrel) and in a BFR. Worst was a .454 in a Freedom Arms.
I have said it before, but to shoot a 45-70 in a pistol , shoot it one handed. If you try to hold a death grip with both hands it will try its best to twist your wrists 180 degrees and come out of your hands. My brother has a Freedom Arms .454 Casul he does his own reloads don't know what the loads are. He has to shoot it one handed with a slightly loose grip so won't tear up has hand. Forgot one time when it was cold out so gripped it tighter split his hand between thumb and first finger off to emergency for stitches.
