Read in the new American Rifleman that Colt has dropped the price of a few of their pistols by $200 to $300. Government Model, Defender, and Mustang. I need to check it out. Has anyone else ??

Colt introduced the Competition Government Model for 2016. It can be had for $750-$800 at LGS's. It comes with features that would normally fetch $1100 a few years ago.

• Adjustable Trigger
• Novak Low Mount rear sight (elevation adjustable)
• Novak Fiber Optic front sigh

I bought one a few weeks ago, and it's a great pistol. It compares very favorably to my Springfield Range Officer; both chambered in 9mm. With the exception of a FTE with a Kimber mag, it's been perfect.

I don't like the VZ grips, since the checkering is a bit too aggressive for my tastes. I replaced them with Altamonts.

Colt knows it has to be competitive with Springfield and Kimber to survive. It's also coming out of Chapter 11, and higher volume sales dollars are mandatory to keep them afloat. I think you'll see more models for less money.

Colt's trying to get back in the game following contract losses and bankruptcy; new models, dropped models, price drops.

I'm digging their new lightweight Commander.

I bought a Government 70 Series last year for just over $800 and the fit, finish and quality is impressive. I had a new 1970 Series back in the late 70s and the new one's just as nice. It has become one of my carry guns.

Here are photos of my new Colt Competition Government. As I mentioned in my earlier post, I replaced the VZ's with a set of Altamont grips.

Dennis, I've been wanting to see the Colt Competition for a month or two.

I guess shops here are too small to get any. How is the accuracy?

I have a 1966 National Match and an early Kimber match, both in 45 and was thinking 9mm in the Competition model.

I see you had one hangup using a Kimber magazine, I hope all other shots were in the 10 ring.

Is it all you hoped for?

I just handled one of those the other day. The salesman took it out when he saw me coming! It's a nice piece.

A few years ago I paid $950 for a new Series 80 Govt model. Always told folks they can count on getting their money back when they sell a gun. Colt proved me wrong.

Two hand grip at 15 yards, I could keep the groups to around 3" inches. Mostly I've been trying to just get it "shot in".

As to the Kimber mag, I tweaked the follower just a tad after I got home. I compared it to another Kimber to insure the follower had the same angle, etc., and it looked just a bit low. I don't want to blame the mag so much, because it was on the last round of the mag, and I didn't get a clean eject/extract. I thought it may have been a slightly under-powered Rem/UMC bulk round, but no problems beyond that.

The trigger breaks at around 4-4.5 lb. However, it breaks like the proverbial piece of glass; no drag at all.

The finish is really flat and even. I've read other accounts that the finish was uneven. Not so with mine. The light spots you see in the photos are just shine from lube. I'm a believer that too much lube, isn't too much.

I had my Springfield RO with me, also. I'd hate for someone to tell me that I had to give up one or the other. They're just about equal.

My only complaint - The FO sights on the Colt come with the blue insert. The blue color is absolutely worthless as to light gathering. Unless Colt was trying to please folks looking for color coordination with the VZ grips, they're a bad idea. The good part is, Colt includes FO rod replacements in red and yellow/green. Mine now has the yellow/green in it. Took me around three minutes and a butane match to change them.
