Default Ruger SR1911

I had a chance to try a Ruger SR1911 today. Nice fit and finish, great trigger. low mount night sights. Only thing I would modify is the safety detent. It was a bit too easy to operate and I'd be worried about disengaging at the wrong time. I do think a stronger detent spring or a slightly deeper detent would allay my concern. The gun shot very nice. Using Perfecta 230 grain ball at 10 yards it shot to the front sight and down the middle. If one is thinking about a alternative 1911, this would be worth a look. Very nice gun and easy to shoot well.

I'm down to two SR1911s right now, a 5" and a Commander. Great gun for the money - Everything you need and nothing you don't.

I have two with consecutive S/n for my son's. They are nice guns. I like my S&W PD commanders more. The Remington is a nice shooting gun too.

Had the opportunity to shoot one that belonged to a friend last week and can say it is one nice range gun.

My neighbour has one and has thousands of rounds through it without issue. I've shot it a number of times and it's a very nice pistol.

I have the CMD lightweight that I bought just over a month ago. It's been 100% reliable with the stock magazines and shoots to the sights. I did change out the stock trigger for a short Greider to accommodate my stubby fingers. Carries very comfortably in a Galco Combat Master.

Hey, partner. Been thinking about this lightweight model after handling one in the LGS. Have you used other mfgr's mags other than the Ruger OEMs? Am doing more research after seeing the malfunctions in Hickok45's YouTube video. Thanks in advance. Stay safe, partner.

The SR1911 looks like a terrific value, as many Rugers are. Unfortunately we Californians cannot buy them due to our Democrats. Which sucks, it is a very nice pistol. I handled one once and was impressed with the fit and finish. Plus it is a Series 70 design, which is always nice.

Kaaskop: I have four ACT & two McCormick Power mags, all 8-rounders. All feed w/out a hiccup, but will not lock the slide back after the last round. A minor inconvenience to me, since I religiously count how many rounds I've fired & change mags (in IPSC) when the last one is in the pipe. I now have 635 rounds thru in it in the last six weeks.

Light weight bounces the gun around quite a bit in my smallish hands even with SAECO 197gr'ers, let alone Lee 230gr'ers & 3.4 grs. of Titegroup. So not really a good match gun, but an excellent all-day-long carry gun where (God forbid) I'd probably need less than half of an 8-round mag & the distance will be point 'n shoot.

Good Luck, Hank M.

I bought the first one I ever saw. It has not disappointed. It has eaten everything I have fed it flawlessly. It has most of the bells and whistles you want out of the box. It is accurate and is as good as many priced much higher. Ruger did a great job.

I like look of the Remington R1s. All stainless, instead of the almost two tone Ruger look.

I got one quite a while back now, and I found that it has a couple of minor things not quite right with it.

First off, the thumb safety extends past the frame when in the "off" position, making it gnaw a minor abrasion to the web of my hand. Also, I found the thumb piece of the safety to be way overly large. It's too large for practical carry uses IMHO. A file and the dremel tool, and a touch up with the cold blue took care of these little problems.

Also, the grip screws will not stay tight. After thirty or forty rounds, the grip panels start wiggling around. I really don't want to Loctite them, as that can cause problems when trying to remove the grips possibly make the grip screw bushings turn out instead of the grip screw. I really think the only real cure for this is new grip screw bushings and grip screws.

These are the only things that I've found problematic on the SR1911. Otherwise, it's a great gun and quite accurate. I don't carry a 1911 in this day and time, but the SR1911 would be a good one if I chose to do so with the proper modifications.

Put o rings on the screws, they won't loosen anymore.

One of mine has this cosmetic flaw.

I opted for the Ruger SR1911 CMD. Couldn't make up my mind, but that Commander sized pistol sure feels good when I shoot it.

kaaskop49:

I bought a Wilson 47D to try in it. First six rounds fed fine but ran into problem with the #7 & #8 rounds out of the magazine. Double feeds and in one instance round #8 was thrown clean out of the ejection port rather than feeding into the chamber. Happened with both mid-range 200 grain LSWC's and full power 230 grain ball. Seemed to be what some call an inertia feed. I emailed Wilson almost two weeks ago but have not received a reply. For now I'm sticking with the factory mags.

I second the O-ring suggestion. The #61. Any full service hardware store. Bout 4 bucks for 10.

When I bought my first 1911 I bought two 47Ds because they were "the best." Both mags had the same issues as yours until I swapped out the springs & followers for 7 rd items. It's a known issue & WC addressed it with the ETM 8 rounders. Bit more body, bit stronger spring.

The Ruger mags are Checkmates with hybrid feed lips and dimpled follower. Available from Guns For Sale | Gun Parts | Shooting Supplies . you can guy 2 of those for the price of a 47D and the Checkmates actually work.
