Pump Remington 870 Express, you should get a little change. It has been around forever.

Remington 870, available in a lot of variations. Been around forever, you can find parts, and pretty straightforward to clean.
Sold one a few months ago for more than I paid for it 3 years ago. Had to give it up for arthritis.

Mossberg 500, 590 or 590A1. The only 870 I would own are older police or wingmaster models, as the newer 870s have their share of problems.

What do you plan to use it for? Any preference as to type - pump, semi-auto, O/U? New or Used? You can get a very serviceable shotgun for much less than $500.

I agree with BlackTalon, older 870s are my choice.
Here's a SCHP turn in gun I picked up for $185.00. Twenty inch barrel cylinder choke, meaning a straight tube.
I bought a used 26 inch barrel that's fitted for interchangeable chokes and added the MO camo adhesive and its now my turkey gun. I've got about $400.00 total in it.

Agree that Mossberg is a good weapon, but the ones I like are a bit pricey. If you find one at a good price, it could be a good option.

A used 870 with screw in chokes will do anything you need to do with a shotgun. Just a little shopping will keep you under your $500 budget with maybe enough left over to get an extra barrel in a different length to make it even more versatile.

My Maverick 88 - 8 shot has been pretty good to me so far.
Paid $242 OTD from my LGS.

Save yourself a lot of time and hassle, don't try to reinvent the wheel.
The 870 Express with a vent rib choke tube barrel can often be bought
new at the big box stores on sale for under $300. It's a throughly
proven design with a steel receiver and proven reliability and durability
and tons of accessories avaliable if you feel the need. New they come
with a 26" or 28" barrel. I prefer the 26" There is a youth model 20 ga
with a 23" choke tube barrel that sells for the same price as the 12 ga.
Barrels are interchangable and one of mine wears a 21" choke tube
barrel that I bought somewhere, ebay I think. Patterns with the tubes
are the same as longer barrels and the gun is very handy.

The 870 is a good recommendation as an all around gun, but give some thought to what you are going to use the gun for. The 870 will do a lot, but not the best for some purposes.

870 is a great start. I have a 28" rib, 20" rifled slug. and 18" barrel. You can cover a lot of ground with those.

As one of the most popular shotguns of all time, the Model 870.
And with more than 11,000,000 sold since its introduction in 1951, ...
Model 870 | Remington
The number of sales tells the tale fo customer satisfaction over the years

Not recommending any brand or style, any shotgun you get should have interchangeable choke tubes, which makes it more versatile for whatever applications you expect to apply it to.

Since both can be bought new for well under your limit of
$500 I can't even imagine why you would choose the
aluminum receiver Mossberg over the Remington 870. The
older is always better idea seems to persist but the reality
is that the 870 Express with it's thicker barrel walls and
beefed up action bars and the anti jam flexi tab improvements
is a better gun than the early Wingmasters. Wingmaster is
a name, nothing more. I have a couple of older ones including
one I bought new in 1980. It's blued rather than dull finished
like the Express, big deal.

Remington 870 Express Tactical if you are looking for a home defense shotgun. You can add on a different barrel later if you want to take it out into the woods too. If you are looking for a woods gun first then the regular 870 express with choke tube barrel in your choice of length. Great budget guns.

The first thing I'd do, which is always my first alternative, is go to a big gun store, and look over their used rack. It's not often I can't find what I'm looking for there, for less than a new one with the only difference being the used one might have a little wear, and it won't have a cardboard box I have to throw away in a year or two after saving it "just in case."
If I had to buy a new one, I'd probably opt for a Mossberg 500 because I've had one of them for about forty years and it hasn't missed a beat. Remington 870 is a good choice too.

I think many would recommend either the Mossberg 500 or the Remington 870 as good choices for a first shotgun. But they are far from the only choices, especially in used shotguns. I have a particular fondness for the Winchester 1200 pump, as I have owned one of those for 40 years, and it has always been very reliable.

If you're moving to the country, you really need the old "East Texas Holy Trinity", of a good quality shotgun (action type doesn't matter), a good centerfire rifle (once again, action type doesn't matter), and lastly, good accurate .22 rifle (and lastly, action type doesn't matter). This combination will get you through the night, and handle just about any situation that would arise in a rural setting. It will take care of any thing from snakes to roaming feral dogs to pot farmers guarding their grow. If it were me, I'd get a Remington 870, just about any AR-15, and a Ruger 10/22, but that's just me. There are many parts and accessories available for these particular firearms, and it gives you a huge amount of flexibility. Any of the shotguns mentioned about will do the job, and would be a good start for you country lifestyle. Good luck in your decision....

Mossberg 500 is fine for about anything, so is the 870. If you want a bedside gun and a vermin control shotgun there are many good working ones in the $200.00 range.
I have many shotguns, but for a bump in the night truck gun, not hunting no shell restriction, I bought a copy of the High Standard pump. Rock Island M5 Brand new blue one for $179 plus tax.
Look at this video, the gun is nickle, I could not find one, it is 10 bucks more.

WITH YOUR HANDLE?
A Wingmaster seems a natural. Much depends on your intended use. For serious clay shooting, or bird hunting, the 870/500/590 not so much. For a hard use knock around general purpose a wingmaster/ mossy 590 series would get my vote. Nothing says Americana rural, (hey farmer) like a sxs double IMO.
