He left me his revolver, it's a model 36 ser# 06388. I would love to know how old it is and what it is worth . any help would be greatly appreciated.

If that is the correct serial number, from the butt of the frame, then about 1951. (Edit: but it wouldn't be stamped Model 36) No way to give an accurate value without pictures and a better description of the condition. Do you have the box and the things that would have come in the box?

Oh by the way it was brand new still in the box, I just fired it today for the first time, hope that didn't hurt it's value.

It doesn't bother me, but there was the sound of a collective disturbance in the Forum right after you posted that last post. Definitely need some pictures, but at first blush, (edit: I completely overstated this before I saw a picture)

Yes I do have the box and that is the correct information, it's black short barrel.

And Xfuzz is correct. I based my assessment using the last 4 numbers since you're new to firearms, but if there is a letter or another number before the 0, if there is a 0, the year of shipment would be different.

Also, it wouldn't be stamped with a 36 until about 1957 or so. Is there a 36 on the frame when you open the cylinder?

I doubt the serial number starts with a 0 . . . What does the label on the end of the box say, and what is on the butt of the revolver? And is there a 36 stamped on the frame when you open the cylinder?

You will need to remove the grips to see the serial# on the bottom of the grip frame.......
The number you posted isn't the serial#!!!
06388 is the assembly# that keeps fitted parts together during assembly. It means nothing once the firearm leaves the factory.

We need a pic of the frame under the crane. You need to raise your camera high enough to us to see the frame, not the crane.

Please look at the bottom of the frame at the grip. The number stamped there will be the correct serial number.

The number on the part of the frame that you photographed is some sort of production marking. Is "Mod 36" stamped anywhere on the frame above the "06388"?

It's much newer than what I said at first. What is the serial number on the end of the box?

It is unusual to see square butt target stocks on a 2" Chief's Special. Is there a smaller set of wood stocks in the box? If so we'd look for the sereial number or a partial serial number stamped into the back of the right stock. Original stocks help value. It is possible it was special ordered with the target stocks. Even if special ordered installed on the gun target stocks very seldom were stamped with the s/n.

It is a very common gun. Not considering the target stocks or box local stores price excellent condition used ones $400 to $450 plus tax. I'll leave it to another member to add what ever premium new in box fetches.

Default Pics you asked for.

Has same number on grip frame and says mod 36 where you said to look.

Is there a number on the bottom flat of the grip frame? This is the location that S&W stamped your revolvers serial#.

Refer to the link. The location of your revolvers serial# is shown on the 10th picture in the link.

Now that we have solved that, the revolver dates to about 1972. I can't help you with a value so someone else will have to chime in.

Thank you very much for all your help. I didn't think it would be worth much for the amount of those guns being around. Lol every cop in the country used that pistol for all those years , there must be millions of them out there. But thank you so much for all your trouble.
