Randall makes a good knife. Their reputation has been stellar. Anyone know what kind of stainless they use? I have recently become enamoured with Elmax, it can take a crazy sharp edge! For carbon blades, both CPM M4 and CPM 3v are tough as nails given the appropriate heat treat.
Congratulations to you for offering it for your son, and to your son for obviously earning your respect and love!
In the mean time, and for something that may carry him over, take a look at Bark River Knife and Tool. They make good knives.

Well the order is in. He totally changed his mind, and ended up with the same knife I was going to order next for myself.
Model 27, with the special stag handle with 13 washers. Nickel silver hilt & butt, thumb grooves, name etching.
The Bradford Angier ended up a close second. Thanks again for all the help and support. This turned into a fun little thread!
Now for the wait......

I'm guessing it maybe was 1960 that I stumbled upon that name, along with Col Townsend Whelen. They had written a book titled "On your own in the wilderness". So being a resourceful young guy, I walked to the library (yes, back then it was my primary form of transportation, much like the Chinese army.) I kind of had a clue how to use the card catalog, but it failed me. Not because of my inability to use the resource, but because it wasn't listed. So the ancient/prehistoric librarian attempted to help me. Still no joy, so she offered to try to borrow it from the big central library. At that point we had the code for the book, but couldn't find anyone that had it. I was distraught. I was sure that if I could just find and read that book, I'd be set for life.
Then my mother took mercy and went to see the librarian. I'm thinking they were friends over the years. So I had the two experts in my life working on my problem. For a while I tried to keep track of any progress, but there was none. Then Christmas morning I had an odd present. I wanted stuff, but got socks and U-trow. Then the book jumped out of a wrapper! I read it that day, as Christmas was usually boring to the extreme.
Now the book is gone. I can't find it in any of my book shelves. Guess it doesn't matter much, all the equipment was outdated by the time I read it. That was the dawning of ripstop and lightweight packs. Old Bradford camped with heavy canvas and leather. You'd need a duce and a quarter to haul the recommended materials.
Regardless, I still like the name being mentioned.

I opened up my knife collection, and let him try some different things on for size. He really liked his grandfathers pal rh35. He realized the value of being able to get his thumb on the spine of the blade.
Long story short. His ideal knife is a stainless 5inch model 5, maroon micarta, brass crow's beak pommel, and half guard.
Any thoughts? Looks like a winner to me. Gonna wait a few weeks to order it, in case he wants to tweak it a little.

I’m resurrecting this thread because it’s almost time to give it to him. Somehow it became a graduation present instead of a birthday present. It came in almost a year ago. But remains unopened. Cant believe how fast time goes by. I told him from the start if he was a screw up I’d sell the knife on ebay.
He’s an 18 year old man now. Very responsible, a great driver, maintained a 91% average through all 4 years of high school. Played football all four years. Going to college in the fall. I couldn’t be more proud of him.
Pictures to come.

Great idea to resurrect. I hunted Elk for 52 Years. Carried a #5 with a 5 inch blade for 51 of them. Not the same one, but always a 5-5. Used a Ruana when the Randall was left in the tent or backpack. Never will go wrong with a Randall, and never will loose money on one. Will require sharpening occasionally.

Here it is, rainy ****** day here. Sorry about the ****** pictures. He loves it. The stag is beautiful and feels great. Has a nice hump on the top that fills the hand nicely. He said “I’m glad I got the stag and not leather”. Lol.
