Shot my gun show finds in the rain today.
Sorry no pics, I did not put up targets.
I had to wait until the rain slacked up, I shot my 1959 Colt National Match using some old NOS 185 gr Win match ammo.
The spring feels as strong as my 1966 NM and I put an 18# recoil spring in it. I only used the target ammo in it. I picked out little white chat rocks that were pushed up in the dirt pile. With each shot at 21' the rock Went missing. Guess the sights were set for that round. I was pretty happy with it, tried 2 different mags and had no issues.
Ran 2 mags thru my 1966 Colt NM. 1 with the target ammo and one with cheap aluminum cased Federal 230 gr hard ball.
It too made rocks disappear with the match ammo and appears to be hitting just under the rocks with hardball. I had one fail to load, barely, in the 1966 gun using a no name magazine and both guns failed to lock open with it after the last shot. It was with match ammo, maybe the spring is a tad stout. I've run a box or two thru it no other issues.
I have fired Magnums forever, but not in the last few years. I have been shooting 25-06, 270, 243, 5.56, 6.5 Grendel type rifles. I forgot to spread my feet and put a hair more weight on my front foot. The FN 300 Win Mag moved me backwards, not serious but enough to remember how to hold one. Not sure if the scope that came with it is zeroed in.
I held on a melon size clump of dirt, it exploded. Picked out a rock on the dirt pile, pulled it back to the shoulder and after I was close to on target I put my finger in the guard and on the trigger. I did not notice it the first time, about 2 pounds of pressure is it. Shot before I was ready. WHOA! Woke me up.
I unloaded it and dry fired it, yep light. I hit the butt very and repeatedly, it did not fire. I was ready the next time, it'll be nice to set up a target and put it dead on at 27 yards.
2 LBS? I guess the previous owner was a bench rest target shooter guy.

check/make sure of the grip safety & dis-connector safety too... sounds like a good carry gun/user & collector piece all rolled into one, hand. Congrats on getting another nice one.

Thanks. Neither came with a box and both have slight blue wear at the muzzle. Perfect for using. The '59 NM looks to be very low mileage. I put an 18# spring in the '66 NM with the thought of using it for everything. I have some Chip McCormick Magazines and want to run a bunch of 230 grain bullets to ensure function.
I'm trying to find and read all I can on Bill Allard. He was Jim Cirillo's partner on many shootouts. Bill saved Jim's bacon in one using his Colt National match he had permission to carry experimentally. I'd like to find out if it was bone stock or set up for target when he won the national championship at Camp Perry.

If you use full loads in those Colts, you may shoot the front sight loose. Colt later made the slide of normal thickness. But when yours were made, the slide was milled out inside to allow better function with light target loads.
My 1966 Natl. Match/Gold Cup was bought new at a USAF BX and it shot amazing groups with 230 grain Federal match ammo. But the sight loosened, as Jeff Cooper warned, and I sold it and bought a std. Government Model.

Thanks, I have read this.
Won't be shocked if it happens. Life is full of stuff that flies off the handle, Axes, splitting mauls, me when younger and a few more. I learned to pick it up an move on. Heck now I even have a back up......

The good news is that my GC was really accurate. I'd tell you how well it shot, but a lot of people on this board wouldn't believe it. And I don't have pics.
I've shot that well with .357 and 44 Magnums, and one Colt New Service, but we're talking really good accuracy, from offhand at 25 yds. I hope that your guns shoot as well.
A milk jug at 100 yards is a relatively easy target.

Sounds like you had a keeper, flying sight and all.
Some folks might not believe it if they saw it. I've been around a few, they have a ready answer, luck, can't do it again or some half empty glass comment. Early on it irritated me but I think the main reason is they can't do it therefore no one else can either. They are competitive but from a rear view mirror perspective.
I'll find out this spring/summer. If they shoot almost as good as my old Kimber target match they will do fine.
My wife told me to pick out a garden spot on the new farm and get busy. We have new fence to build and get ready for a home builder hopefully.
My wife is as workaholic. It is hard for her to sit down to watch TV, if she has 5 minutes till bed time she can find a 5 minute job. I tell her she is her own stress maker.
The bad thing is when we're remodeling or whatever if I stop to catch my breath it's like being married to a DI..... Didn't you have a break last week? We'll never get done if you keep collapsing and laying there panting.....
