Default A REAL TOUGH COLT PART TO GET - CAN ANYONE HELP?

I would like to purchase a few SEAR DEPRESSOR SPRINGS for a Colt Series 70 Gold Cup .45 acp 1911 Pistol. This tiny little spring is unique to this model and goes into the Sear. I have contacted all the usual suppliers and some unusual ones - but no luck.

The Colt part number is: SP52455

Please let me know if you have one or several that I can buy.

Thanks!

Regards,
Chief38

There is no generic spring for this. This spring measures approximately 3/8" in length and about 3/64" in diameter and is extremely fine. It IS REALLY TINY!! Wolff was the first place I called - no luck.

You might try Clark Customs and see if they have any and can advise you on what would work or raise the trigger pull weight to a point you don't have to worry about sear bounce .

I spoke to Clark already and they do have two left - but are unwilling to sell them. Jack First GP's does have plans in the near future to manufacture them (guess there is enough demand) but that doesn't help now.

Thanks!

```````````````````````````````
Checked with both of them dave and they do not have anything even close.
The spring I need is made of 32 AWG wire (0.008") and the spring is 0.047" in outside diameter. It measures 0.267" in length and has 18 coils. I've contacted a few Spring manufacturers and found one that will actually make me 100 pieces (minimum order). Of course this will be very expensive (due to the set up) but if I keep coming up empty I may try and sell some to offset the cost.
Colt offered to fit a new style Sear in the old Gold Cup but I am not interested in giving up the super sweet trigger on mine. Right now I have it working well with a used spring but definitely want a bunch of back-ups. I shoot this gun more than any other and at least once a year I need to do a FULL and COMPLETE disassembly, cleaning and lubrication on it. Not that I am careless, but these little buggers have a habit of taking off and will never be found once that happens. It's also not hard to accidentally bend one when reinstalling it because of its miniature dimensions.
Any chance Bill Wilson (Wilson Combat), Ed Brown, Les Baer might have some?
I highly doubt it since neither of those two manufacturers use these Sear Depressor Springs in their pistols. Colt discontinue their use many many years ago and Brownells recently ran out of whatever supply they had left.
Stakeout & Qball,
Thanks, that's it! They are rip off prices but I can't afford to be worried about that since they must know they have the market cornered and I am in need. I will get a few even though the price is crazy. Thanks again!
I wonder how difficult it would be to make your own? I have wound several spiral compression springs myself, but none that small.
$15 is cornering the market for a rare spring?
The OP should just buy it and forget about it.
If you are so living on the margins that $15 is too much, then the firearms hobby is probably not for you.
I've made springs in my shop as well, but this one measures 0.047" in diameter, x 0.265" in length and is made of .008" (32 AWG) thick wire and has 18 coils. AIN'T HAPPENING!
I DID buy two of them - thanks again for the heads up on the listing! Can't believe I did not look there myself - forgot about GB!
Unfortunately he's "the only game in town" currently. I just want the parts to be what he says they are - original Colt Springs.
Jack First Parts (Betty) did tell me they had plans to make some within 6 months, but a "bird in the hand" is worth more than a promise and who knows what Jacks price will be if and when they are available??
Lightbulb SPRINGS
I have this gun, and have never had a problem but -- I am not familiar with said spring but, and don't laugh--- You might check the springs in one of those butane lighters that are empty-- I quit smoking years ago, but keep a lighter or two on hand-- I would think Brownells would carry such an item as well. You just never know. Just a thought.
Neither Brownell's nor Numrich carry the part any more, and the butane lighter springs are too large. I bought a few from Brownell's a couple of years ago.
If you've ever taken a Gold Cup all the way down, you'll know just how difficult it is to re-assemble with the spring. I have a couple in "Lost Spring Land".
Many years ago, I had a series 70 Gold Cup. When I got a trigger job, the first thing the pistolsmith did was throw away that little spring. If that little spring were the answer to a good trigger job, the top 1911 custom shops would be using it...and they don't.
A hipshot idea ---- seems like you described a tiny coil spring ?? I get coil springs from cigarette lighters, the spring that pushes the flint up. There are at least two diameters, one about 1/16" dia , the other a tad smaller. They are about 3/4" long & can be cut to length. I have used them for years in various gun applications.
The S&W hammer nose springs I have come very close to meeting the spec's you list above. Same OD, just a few thousandths short in length. I can send you a couple if you want to give them a try.
So tell me...
One what?
I really fail to see why $15 is an excessive price for a specific out-of-print spring.
Have you looked at the rear sight detent spring in a S&W rear sight? It is very tiny, also the sear spring on the revolver hammer/sear. Many people have never seen these as it is seldom these parts are torn all the way down. I will say I have a series 70 gold cup that has had extensive work done to it, and it no longer has that spring and I see no difficulties. It has a great trigger.
Chief, I know why you feel "ripped" by that $15 price tag. I recall Midway selling them for $3.95 year before last, and $4.25 last year; so I guess they had some reasonable profit involved, which makes the $15 seem a little..........The reality though, you can't "junk" a $1500.00 (?) gun for lack of a $15.00 dollar part.
I see you have some now, but next time, along with ALL the other suggestions for a substitute; break apart one of the old watch band pins, and cut the spring to length. The smaller pins like for a ladies watch are a near match.
Also to perhaps widen your search outside just the "Series 70" G C; they were also being used back in the 60s G C as well.
To those who declare "take it out and throw it away";... if you ever do that, (plus have the trigger stop screw adjusted a hair too tight), you are more than likely going to get a handfull of full-automatic .45 a c p rounds headed down range ! In fact the last two or three of the full mag will most likely be headed straight up.
That sorta thing will jangle your nerves, and "hizzoner" does NOT like full autos in his territory.
Changing out that design sear to regular, or installing a proper width aluminum trigger also alleviates the need for the sear depressor; but then of course; you no longer have the correct Series 70 Gold Cup.
The last one of the little **&&%$* I installed, after the first of the two I had went bouncing merrily away; I used heavy grease on the little spring, and finally worked atop a piece of plate magnet to get it together for a slave pin. Next time it needs a cleaning I'm gonna try some of the magic "flush & clean" stuff.
Have you tried this company?
Straight Compression Spring On The D.R. Templeman Co.
Will they sell in small quantities or do you have to buy them by the thousand?
Buy a thousand at 20c each then sell the others at $15 a pop.
I understand finding a source is difficult.
But when I asked this seller if he had certain items listed remaining.
He doubled his price on each item before responding back to me.
When I asked him why, he told me that he hadn't had a price increase in a while and it was due.
He's a thief...
P.S. I didn't buy those other parts.
You will have to check the website. I had an order a year or two ago, and as I recall there was a minimum order. Not much, though. Maybe $40.00 or so. That would get a passel of springs and could be shared with others who need this little spring.
By the way, I have a Colt National Match from the late 60s. Some years ago I disassembled it not being aware of this little spring hidden away in its guts. I had disassembled many 1911 pistols and never encountered this contrary little setup. Fortunately, I didn't lose the spring, and I was able to get the assembly back together (not an easy task without whatever retaining tool Colt uses). I don't want to have to do that again.
If you've ever taken a Gold Cup all the way down, you'll know just how difficult it is to re-assemble with the spring. I have a couple in "Lost Spring Land".
Easy. Assemble the sear/thingy with a round toothpick, cut the tooth pick even with the sides of the sear, drop in, push the sear pin through, toothpick drops out.
I came up with this idea after chasing that spring a few times on a GC Series 70 I had back in the 80's.
Thanks to all attempting to help out. Stakeout pointed me in the right direction and I did get two springs from the guy on GB. Armorer also mentioned that the old Hammer Nose Springs on S&W's are very similar and I do believe that I have a few of those to check out as well. I separate my parts inventory by Manufacturer, Pistol, Revolver and model numbers and did not think to cross reference a Smith Revolver with a Colt Auto - but hey..... a spring is a spring and that was a great idea.
For those with the Series 70 (1970's era) Gold Cups, you might want to get one or two as this guy seems to be the only game in town. Replacing this little tiny Sear Depressor Spring is a whole lot easier and less expensive than changing and fitting a new Sear should you break or loose that little sucker. Even if you were to replace the Sear with a modern style I doubt you cold achieve as light a trigger pull as you can with this devise in place -safely. This little Sear Depressor and spring allows for a lighter trigger pull on the old Gold Cups without unintentional doubling of shots.
My 1970-something Gold Cup has the sweetest trigger pull of any 1911 I have ever tried.
When I first replied to this thread I knew I had a diagram of the Gold Cup trigger assembly, but I couldn't find it. Today I was looking for something else and came across it in my files.
Some people interested in this thread might find this helpful. My pre-70 National Match has the same assembly as what is shown here as Series 70.
