Any experience with Taurus 709?
Yes I know it's a "Taurus"! But this model has been in production a number of years. They are on sale and can be bought for $200 plus $30 for a second magazine.
Great deal if reliable or an exercise in frustration if a jam-o-matic.
Any experience, good or bad, with later model 709?

I bought one 2 years ago. It's been very reliable. I've put enough rounds thru it to be comfortable carrying it. I've shot reloads, cheap stuff, and good sd rounds thru it. My only criticism is the trigger. Lot of travel till you you hit the break point. You may want to try one before you buy, to make sure it isn't a deal killer.

I bought one almost two years ago. It had failure to feed, failure to eject, and light primer strikes on factory new ammo, my handloads using new cases, my reloads. The feed ramp is a two piece design, part on the frame and part on the barrel. There's a gap between the two. The feed ramp on the barrel was sharp enough to shave a little bit of lead from a hardcast projectile. It went back to Taurus twice, and was never reliable enough for me to want to carry it.
I'll be honest. Unless you are buying a Taurus design that came from it's Beretta origins or when S&W and Taurus were holding-company kissing cousins, you have a higher chance of getting a bad one. All manufacturers have an error rate, but Taurus' is a bit higher in my experience. I want to reiterate that I'm not bashing Taurus, I'm just being honest. I've owned a few Taurus pistols. The PT92 & M66B6 were great. The 709 Slim, Judge, and PT111 9mm G1 weren't.

I traded my Sccy for the Taurus 709. Couldn't stand the long trigger pull and my index finger getting pinched with the Sccy.
Back to the Taurus. I've only put 200 rounds thru the 709 - but man what a sweet little gun for around $239!!! Recoil is not that bad (IMHO) either. I am almost tempted to buy another I saw for $199!
I like everything about it. Manual Safety, internal lock, trigger is awesome with a short reset and adjustable rear sight. After making some windage adjustments - at 15 yards am dead on! One draw back is it comes with 1 mag. But you can find mags for under $30. I found them new for $25 each.
The jury is still out on reliability. However, I watched this guns and ammo video where they tested several single stack 9's and the 709, G43 and Walther were the top 3 remaining because they had no malfunctions whatsoever after a 1,000 round test. That's what convinced me to buy one.
PS I forgot to mention its also light and the slim grip is really nice - especially if you have small hands. I have large hands so it feels real nice in my hands.
Good luck! Go and get one.
Cheers!

I bought a Taurus 709 Slim 9mm after reading the G&A test of single
stack 9mms. I got it a few months ago and because of the weather I
only have about 100 rds through it so far. I shoot in my back yard and
now that it's starting to warm up a bit I'm going to be able to start
shooting again. I really like it so far. It's been very reliable and I
consider it a bargain for the money. It's not perfect. It shoots a bit
low for me with the rear sight raised as far as it will go but it has
features lacking in some more expensive guns, like second strike
capability for one. Taurus has a lifetime warranty and It's hard to
see how you can go wrong with the 709 when they can be found on
sale sometimes for around $220.

How does $200 + free shipping grab ya'?
That's what they're listed for right now at slickguns. Pretty amazing deal. So far I haven't seen much of anyone who owns one that has had a bad experience with it - even on the Taurus forums.
I'm thinking pretty darned hard on this one myself.
A 7+1 single stack 9mm for two bills OTD with a lifetime warranty. WOW!

I had a FFL back in the 90's and sold a lot of Taurus pistols and revolvers and never had any complaints as their QC was a lot better back then. The only Taurus that I've owned since then is a Model 92 from 1999...a lot of rounds down the pipe..factory and my reloads with no problems. I even put a set of Altamont pearls on it ...my son says it looks like a pimp gun . Regards Rich

I did. I was honest about it and posted.

C'mon dude. That isn't surprising is it? Taurus enthusiasts on their own forum wouldn't be a bit biased towards Taurus. There's no way. It doesn't happen here with S&W firearms so it can't happen there.
All I'm saying is use some whit of critical thinking when determining credibility via negative affirmation.
The Taurus forum are some of the nicest folks. I like lurking their board, and participating here and there.

Then go buy one dude. Life is too short. Go into it knowing your chance of buying one with flaws that made it past QC are higher than with other manufacturers. Lifetime warranty = send it back.
I had a bent trigger bar on my used Taurus PT92. I had to send it back to Taurus on my dime. It came back in a total of 11 days which included weekends and a federal holiday. Not only did they replace the bent trigger bar, they replaced all the wear items (springs, etc). I even got a new set of standard Taurus plastic grips and new grip screws.
A friend + a coworker had similar experiences. One had a stainless PT92 that shot low left in everyone's hands. The other had a defective magazine catch. Both were covered under Taurus lifetime warranty. Turn around time was less than two weeks. I can't detract from Taurus' current customer and repair services.

Don't forget re-strike capability.
I honestly hope you get a problem free example of a 709. I wish I had.

Maybe you should buy another 709, the odds are obviously in
your favor for another try :-)

No. I've since acquired a Glock 43 to fill the need.

Sorry, I didn't see your post before.
So I'll revise my original statement.
JaPes is the only one I can recall posting around here who has had problems with one.
Even looking in the Taurus Forums - WHERE PEOPLE GO TO POST THEIR PROBLEMS WITH TAURUS GUNS - the 709 is one of the models that I haven't seen a lot of people reporting issues with. You see a lot more people reporting issues with the TCP, and PT series guns, but not so much with the 709.
So it would appear to be one of their best models.
FWIW, I have a TCP and a PT111 and have had zero issues with either of them.
