Default Anybody hunt with a SxS double trigger shotgun?

I've always hunted with a pump shotgun, tried automatics a couple of times and didn't like them for some reason so I switched back to my Mossberg pump. It does everything I want and brings down the game, but I'm just a hair too slow with it on quail so I thought I might get a new gun. I never liked over/unders so I bought a CZ Ringneck side by side 20 gauge with single trigger and I freaking loved that gun and I was deadly with it. I then sold it for some strange reason and I still can't figure out why I sold it but recently saw they stopped making the Ringneck so I bought an old Ugartachea 12 gauge. It has the english straight grip and double triggers, and is in mint condition and I've never shot a gun with double triggers before I hope the learning curve isn't too bad.

As a kid with my father who used a very old side by side 12 gauge with a stock he hand carved himself. My brother has that gun today. it was my father's first gun and it was the first long gun I shot at about age 10 or 11. Today the only side by side I have is a coach gun with the short barrel and I rarely use it at all any more. I use a pump 98 percent of the time these days.

I hunt only with vintage sxs guns. All have double triggers. It's pretty simple and doesn't take long to learn.

Don't try choosing which barrel to shoot: start with the forward trigger (right barrel). This is usually the most open choke. You just slide your finger to the second trigger for a second shot.

Get to a trap range and shoot a few rounds( of trap) from low position so you learn to mount the gun while you disengage the safety.

Then practice shooting doubles at trap, also from low position. This helps develop muscle memory to move on to the second trigger.

Don't overthink this.

The biggest problem I've seen folks have in the field is trying to pick a choke for a shot: slows them up, often they can't find the second trigger for a follow up to the usually missed first shot.

I'm sure others have better ideas and advice.

I don't know why you would sell a 20ga Ringneck either!! Single triggers were long the rage, but a number of people now want 2 triggers, even converting single trigger guns. It instantly gives you choice of which choke to fire. It's nice when that quail surprises you and takes flight 40 yards away to pull the trigger on the mod choke instead of IC.

Use a c.1920's Ithaca 20 SxS and a relatively new CZ Bobwhite 28 ga. SxS. Both have double triggers.
It's never been an issue. A far, crossing bird is handled, I hope, by the rear trigger/snugger choke. All others, the forward, more open.

I have 4 sxs shotguns and 1 sxs rifle. As a rule never place a finger on each trigger! However the once in a while opportunity for very quick repeat shots, in sporting clays. Since you always see the birds before you have to shoot a station, you get to choose how to shoot it. The hardest combo for both triggers for me is rear first then front. If you don't practice it every few months, you're better off staying with a single finger! And never ever walk with a finger on any trigger, you might end up like V.P. Dick Chaney, and add a lawyer to you daily bag! (Of course, Texas has no closed season or bag limit on lawyers!)

All my SXSs have 2 triggers and splinter FEs. I only have one gun that has a straight hand stock (Merkel) but I wish they all did. Larry

I've hunted crows and deer with a K-Mart Savage-Stevens 12g double trigger SxS. I don't remember ever having issues. I bagged a few crows with it, never a deer.

I did like the SxS double trigger set up for deer hunting because you could put a slug in one barrel and buckshot in the other. Nothing else is this versatile, except maybe an O/U with a selective trigger. Eventually I decided that I needed better sights for deer so I bought a shotgun with a rifled barrel I could mount a scope on. I have lost track of how many deer it has accounted for.

I got tired of my cheapie SxS and traded it for a used Fox Model BSE SxS with a non-selective single trigger. I like the feel and overall quality of the Fox a whole lot more. I wish it had a selective trigger though.

Like this Browning Sidelock?

Love 'em. I had a CZ Bobwhite SXS with two triggers for a while, but it was just too petite for my hands.

I also have a Browning BSS box lock 20 gauge with a single trigger and a straight grip. Purportedly an advantage with two triggers is that in effect you have two guns in case one trigger goes south, but I've never seen that happen. Then again I haven't seen a lot of things, or gone hunting for months in the Dark Continent.

I just think SxS's are pretty, feel good to me, and are easy to handle. I can shoot anything with an average of below average ability. I like pumps and over/unders also, but just can't warm up to semi-auto's for some reason, just a personal glitch.

Love the SxS's, nice gracefull shotgun. Hunted with all actions but stayed with the double. Had a nice Merkel and CZ Brno sidelock with 2 triggers and sold the Merkel. Found a nice Beretta 626 onyx with tubes, beaver tail and pistol grip. That's my favorite gun now but has 1 trigger. Never had a problem with the double triggers. The CZ is for sale now also, have a 311 in 20 ga as a back up gun. Larry

Only doubles I've ever used were double-trigger SXS boxlocks. I loved them and still do. The use of the triggers immediately becomes second nature, and for me the double guns just mount and swing better.

I've been shooting side by side for years. I prefer them with double triggers. I have two in the safe with single triggers, the wife AH Fox 20 gauge and my DeHaan 28 gauge.

I don't shoot the single trigger guns all that much. I have found myself, more than once, searching with my trigger finger for a back trigger that isn't there. It is amazing how that momentary mental lapse cause misses.

Of course on the other end of the learning curve when I got my first double trigger gun more than once I found my self pulling that front trigger hard trying to get that second shot.

Really it doesn't take all that long to use to a double trigger gun. One hint double triggers are much easier to deal with on straight grip and Prince of Wales gripped guns. The trick is to stretch for the front trigger so your finger slips easily back to the second trigger. You don't move your hand so open grips that give your hand plenty of room work best.

With a little practice you can fire that second barrel faster than your friends can get off their second shot from a semi auto.

Another plus for double triggers are they are much more reliable than single triggers. There is also a quick pick of choke with double triggers.

Two barrels and two triggers is just how it should be.

You do have the options of either barrel first, and both at the same time if you are really mad at something. Also, a dud in the first barrel can really mess up your swing and follow through with a single (inertia) trigger. Double triggers really help when you're huntin' with the preacher.

If ever the statement "what goes around" applies it would certainly fit double barrel shotguns. When I first started 12 gauge, single triggers and 26" barrels were all the rage but this has changed.
Now the preference is for smaller gauges like the 20 ,double triggers and 30" barrels.
I personally think if you're only going to own 1 shotgun you're better off with a 12 gauge as it will do anything the smaller gauges will do and probably better. This observation is based upon 40 years of shotgunning experience with any and all gauges and types of shotguns made.
Just a note on single triggers and also ejectors while I'm at it. If either of these features goes out of whack they are very expensive to get repaired.
Jim

Way back in my safe sets a 16ga Stevens 311a that was my first gun in the 60s, and 70's I ve killed a truck load of quail with that old gun , wish I could still follow a bird dog but that activity in the past.

there is also a 20 ga 311a, a 410 ,311a,an old ranger (sears) 16ga Fulton box lock, and a old fox b model 12 ga single trigger

I love a double gun always have and always will. in the past I have owned parkers,Beretta silver hawks, Winchester 21's, Lc smith's, uncle dan's upper level lefever guns, all quality shotguns but I just seem to be able to shoot the old utlity grades the best and while they are not works of art they do work

grandson and 3 senior classmates were at the hunting cabin last week on spring break, they had brought down a JM Mossberg 930, and a pump remiington 877, and they all loved shooting the old fox 12 and could hit with it better than the new guns

Can't add much to what has already been said about double trigger guns, but I will mention your new Ugartechea SxS. You don't see many of them around. I had one in 12ga for a number of years, and it was a very nice handling, high quality, well made shotgun. Picked it up at a gunshop's bargain rack, sitting there with assorted Russian and Brazilian SxS's. He didn't know what he had, and I got it at a very good price. Bought it for Pheasant and Grouse. Unfortunately, I just could not hit with it - It just didn't fit me, so I eventually sold it, and replaced it with an old Ithaca that works well for me. Enjoy yours. Pic attached of mine.

The first gun I ever picked out for myself was a Sears/Stevens 311, with 30" barrels, full/modified chokes and double triggers that my mother ordered for me from the Sears-Roebuck catalog in those before GCA-68 days. A Sears truck delivered it a few days later.

I worried about the double triggers. It was worry for the sake of worry. I never had a problem with remembering to just slide my finger back to the rear trigger.

I still love a double gun (an over and under is not a "double gun" in my humble opinion...it's an over and under), but haven't owned one for years, until a week or so ago when I purchased a 1921 Parker Trojan.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it. I found a sporting clays range not far from here, so I might give that a try just for grins and giggles.

Triggers are easily learned, you will do it without even thinking
about it. When I was younger I use to loose a shot with pump
guns. I was used to Brn A5s as main shotgun, when using a pump, I would"forget" to pump it. Even the dogs would look at
me like I was a rookie, as the bird flew away.

I don't hunt with them, because I can't hit anythng with a shotgun. But I do have a very pretty Darne 28 gauge, and a pretty Charlin 12 gauge. I take out the old clay bird slinger and shoot holes in the air with them.

I shoot mostly pumps and SxS's.
The last SxS I owned w/a single trigger was as a (Savage)Fox BSE 16ga and that was in the 60's.

I repair lots of single triggers for fellow shooters on everything from Win21's, Parker, LCSmith, Ithaca, AH Fox,,ect. Even a couple Ruger Gold Labels of late.
Problems w/single triggers (selective single triggers) are probably the #1 mechanical problem complaint from SxS gun owners. Next is ejector problems of some sort.

Absolutely nothing wrong w/a DT SxS and this thing about 'learning to use them' is just so much bunk.
It's not a science or something you need a Community College course to be able to catch on to.
Like Drm50 says,,you do it w/o even thinking.

Shoot the doubles in skeet 'backwards' to take advantage of the chokes and you don't even have to switch triggers.

Some 'spensive SxS's have a 'hinged' front trigger. It allows the front trigger to pivot forward when the rear trigger is pulled.
Recoil from that second (rear) bbl shot can sometimes force the trigger finger forward into the back of the front trigger.
The hinged effect of the front trigger dampens the recoils effect on your finger.
It's actually found more on double rifles than shotguns where heavy recoil can be quite a bruiser.
But it's a nice option on SxS's too if the loads are hefty, and/or the gun is extremely light weight and your trigger finger is taking a beating on that second shot.

My initial shotgunning was a Stevens M94 single shot 410. Dad had Gramps White Powder single shot 12 gauge and a Stevens 311 in 16 gauge. I was good at pulling the hammer back and picking up on 2 triggers was much easier.

For years I hunted birds with 2 trigger doubles, Parkers and AH Fox.
When a group of us started shooting sporting clays I used the old SS guns. Then I went thru some kind of fever or sumthing and ended up with an O/U set up for sporting.

I miss quail and pheasant hunting with my Elhew pointer. I also bought Chukar, released them and turned my Elhew girl on them. I had a PArker 12 gauge in A grade, damascus bbls. I stopped at a gun shop that was closing, he had 7 or 8 boxes of Navy 12 gauge Black Powder shells, cheap. I bought them. Hunting chukar and blowing out BP smoke was lots of fun.

Killed lots of Ducks with autos. Ithaca MAg 10. I had it shortened to 26" from a FULL 30" and had screw in chokes installed so I could use the new fangled steel shot.

Bagged lots of Turkeys with the Mag 10 also. I actually traded it for the A grade Parker.

Most of my hunting, plinking at clays and HD is now tied to a pump shotgun.

Going turkey hunting tomorrow morning with one. My old fox is full and ic. Throws tight patterns for most shots, and the ic for when mr tom makes a charge.

Best of luck. Don't forget, on the IC bbl wait until you see the whites of the eyes in a full blown charge.

I hope you score. I have to wait until May 2 for our turkey season to open. I went and did a little spotting this morning.

A couple of years ago I used my 12 gauge Fox AE to kill a turkey. The Fox has 32 inch barrels choked full and fuller. It did the job. This year I plan on using my Damascus barreled Parker GH.

Here are some photos from this morning. And my turkey taken with the Fox.

Cyrano--The inability to hit anything with a shotgun does not slow down any of the hunters I know! And "shooting holes in the air" generally describes my dove hunting. Although I make up for the holes by filling them with red-hot profanity. And think of the Ammo manufacturers too! I bet I can keep at least one production line in operation the opening week of dove season.

I do. Very effective on Quail. I love it. A Remington Baikal... has served me well over the years. Lightweight and fun to chase and shoot. It is all I use for game birds.

I have the exact same gun, 12 ga straight grip choked I/C and I/M. I have more trouble remembering to take the auto safety off than using a double trigger. I had never used a double trigger until I got this gun (just a few months ago). I'm used to single barrel trap and O/U skeet guns. The SXS is "fun" to shoot. I do need to learn to shoot it a lot better. I've shot a few rounds of skeet with it, and really like it.

I haven't done it in years but because of cowboy action shooting I've had several long barreled SxS/double trigger guns so I used them for doves a time or three. Since I'm a terrible wing shot I didn't find them any more useful or less useful than a pump gun. Mine were/are all vintage guns, 12 gauge originally, then 16 gauge.

Are those pics up in the Wasatch?
BTW, you mentioned hunting turkeys with a Damascus barreled gun. I have my great-grandfather's 12 ga. Lefever double with Damascus barrels. Bore is good and it's lockup is good and tight, triggers and safety work. I shot squirrels with it as a teenager, but darned if I can remember the shells we used back then. My uncle supplied them. What will you use for turkeys or recommend? I'd like to shoot my old gun, maybe at turkeys around our country place but more likely squirrels. I'm not an experienced shotgunner and wouldn't want to hurt the old girl with too strong a load.

The nice thing about good quality doubles is they never go out of style(Not for most of us anyway) and they'll continue to perform as well as any new gun if properly maintained.
Here's one of my favorites it's an L C Smith side lock ejector gun built in 1903. At 113 years old I in no way feel handicapped hunting with it! It has both a single selective trigger and ejectors and fortunately for me I've had no problems with either of them.

I hunted pheasant with a side by side with double triggers. Worked well
for selecting which barrel to use for close and far birds. I think you will
like the doubles.

Turkey hunting here is getting pretty decent and yes, theses were taken in a local canyon here on the Wasatch Front Range.

I do love Lefever shotguns. A number of years ago I passed a up a mid level grade Lefever. I've been kicking my self for not adding it to the safe.

One really nice things about Lefever side lock guns is if they get loose you can adjust the ball screw that acts as a hinge and tighten it right up.

Damascus guns are not a "black powder" only as goes the old wives tale. Many Damascus guns were built and proofed for smokeless powder. By about 1895 to 1900 smokeless loads were in regular use.

As to loads, provide the barrels are sound and the bores free of pits it very well may be safe to shoot with lower pressure loads from manufactures like RST, Gamebore, Polywad and B&P.

I own two Damascus barreled guns. A Belgian double and Parker GH. The Belgian gun was manufactured somewhere between 1896 and 1905. The original service load is stamped on the barrels by the Belgian proof house. It is a 3 dram 1 1/8 smokeless load.

My Damascus barreled Parker GH was manufactured in 1924 which is very late for a Damascus gun. Parker used the same proof loads Damascus or fluid steel.

Both guns have great bores and sound barrels. I plan on using Gamebore Pure Gold 2 1/2 in. 32 gm #6 shot loads. They pattern very well out of the Parker. With it's full and fuller choking it should the job easily on Tom within 35 yards.

I would say have a gunsmith that really has experience with side by side and more so Damascus barreled guns give the Lefever a good looking over. If all is in order go ahead and order some RT shells and shoot it some.

Here is my Parker with a sage grouse from last Fall. There is something special about using a classic old side by side with double trigger for what it's maker intended.

All this turkey talk has brought on lots of gobbling, i mean talking.

Bill I keep splaining that I used to have 6 Parkers and Philadelphia Foxes and when I sold them at the divorce I shied away from even looking or touching them. They have a a pull for a user that is stronger than the new synthetic stuff on the street. For a while I thought I was gonna have to go to Double's rehab.

I hear you and understand proofing for most BP shotguns, the problem is, there are plenty of old uncared for for border line guns.

I personally would not have any issues with a solid gun and have used low brass smokeless ammo in damascus.

Oh, Bill you said a pic of the turkey by your Fox. And then said scouting, do you scout with a double to keep coyotes off you?

For some of the guys who have not done it and want to shoot low power loads.

My first 12 after my 410 was my Grandfathers White powder Wonder.

Long barrel and full choke, I shot lots of squirrels and rabbits with it. All using low brass ammo.

When I lived in the middle of the original Turkey Mecca I took it one year for opening day of the 2nd week. I used my 7.5 reloads, they worked well in doubles or pumps but were a little weak and didn't function in Autos. I killed the largest turkey I'd ever seen, the shot peppered the head and neck. That is pretty basic compared to a 3.5 inch modern turkey gun.

Also for you gents that are just starting, do not look at the turkeys body when it's time to shoot, after you verify it has a beard, usually the fluffy ones strutting and gobbling. Except on cool or wet days, they may just wander around, look for the beard.

When you shoot line the bbl up on the head. I usually hold the bead under the head at the jaw. Like a rifle, squeeze the trigger.

Pump in another round in the chamber just in case.

I've killed a semi full of Deer and a lesser truck full of turkeys.

Deer brings a different reward than turkeys. Deer are quiet, sneaky and camoflaged. When a deer is brought to bag one feels elated, glad to have meat for the larder and then it is nice if it has a good rack.

Turkey on the other hand are only quiet sometimes, sneaky and well cammo'ed. When they are gobbling your BP rises, you find yourself purely excited. While the gobble just out of sight or range you may find breathing a little difficult, as in remembering to actually breath.

When it hits the ground be ready for a follow up, I knocked down quite a few that bounced up like they were on a trampoline. They can go airborne as quick as a pheasant or Quail and can move fast, they can wiggle around trees and you can watch the rise and hit a ridge a half a mile away while you're brain is still saying I hit hem what happened.

And that is exactly what happened on the first one I knocked down that bounced up. 20 or 30 before him had stayed down. I saw it several more times but was ready.

I've killed more turkey in jeans and a dark shirt than camo. Turkeys are pretty lustful but be ready or they will beat a fast retreat.

Legs. Turkeys have long legs and they can run about 88 MPH it seems.

They can be airborne in a leap to roost or take 2 quick steps and be airborne for the next ridge.

Be aware of your surroundings. Hunters wear camo.

My brother was one of the best turkey hunters ever until he quit.
He can move better than D. Boone, he sounds like a Gobbler or hen. He quit because folks would hear him and move it to get a bird. HE was sitting by a large Oak, waiting to shoot a Tom he called in, when BOOM! a guy had set up a tree or 2 behind him and shot the gobbler. Bro yelled out the guys heritage and the fella ran off, Bro pick up the bird and never has hunted public land again.

Keep your eyes open and your neck turning, like ole Tom hisself.

Good luck to all of you.

it is a fact that Damascus barrels were often speck'd on later guns at the beginning of the smokeless era, in fact many shot gunners preferred the barrels when compared to the early steel barrels and the prices were higher for the Damascus guns versus the early sheet steel barrels

the difference in quality was in the number of wires (steel and iron) that created the laminated steel in the Damascus barrels a barrel made with an 8 wire twist was stronger than one with a 3 wire twist

here is a good resource on these barrels

People that think Damascus barrels are not safe to shoot probably still check the choke with a dime. Larry

Here is a good discussion of what load for your Damascus guns. The photos of the barrels flats on the nicely plum browned Belgian double is my gun.

What load was my vintage double designed to shoot? - The DoubleGun BBS @ doublegunshop.com

Good advice for turkey hunting nimrods.

As a hunter that pretty much is stuck hunting public land which about 70% of Utah is I do worry about other hunters. Mostly it is a brushy where I hunt with little opening that give you, if your lucky, a 40 or 50 yard view.

This will sound funny but I've started putting out some dirt cheap foam decoys when I setup. I don't do it so much to attract old Tom, that is what a call is for; but, as a sign to other hunters I'm in the area so keep out.

Keeping your neck and eye turning is also good advice. The Tom I called in and killed last year circled around my setup and came in on the same little trail I did. I just caught him out of the corner of my eye. I quickly swung my shotgun around and about took his head off 15 or 20 feet from where I was sitting.

Oh I don't do my scouting with a side by side. I carry a camera with a big lens and an old S&W .44 on my belt to keep the bears off.

Yup my first new shotgun was a sxs 12ga western auto w/30" barrels made by FOX I think. Hunted with it for decades. Double triggers, full and mod barrels. She's still in the safe.

the darne was a gun, that I always wanted one of ,but never bought.

my dad had an old hunting and drinking buddy back in the late 50's and early 60's who was a wwII vet who had a 20 ga that he liberated in France shortly after D-day.

we swapped work back then in our crops, and I picked up my love for double guns and two cylinder John deere from him.

he was a gracious man that did not mind a lot of questions from a young kid.

your post on the darne made me remember this old man. his name was Emmit Lewis from Elizabethtown Ky. he and his wife had no children and he passed at some point while I was over seas, I would have loved to had his gun it would set in a place of honor with other old family guns

Yeah, I'd love to win the lottery and buy a new Holland and Holland. Save up my sofa change long enough and I might be able to afford a Parker, LC Smith or AH Fox

However, I make do with a trio of Savage Fox B's. I don't hunt, but I do shoot quite a bit of skeet, trap and sporting clays, usually with the 12 gauge. I've put as many as 200 rounds through it in an afternoon of clays, and it's solid as a rock (a 1973 model). So, a good shotgun doesn't have to be an expensive one. I also have a 16 and a 20, both get used on occasion; the 20 gauge dates to 1950 and the 16 to 1962. They are lighter with shorter barrels and the LOP is shorter than my 12, it takes me a while to get used to them .

When you start shooting you double, I'd do like RPG mentioned, practice at skeet and trap until handling the double triggers becomes second nature. It doesn't take long. Set your initial right hand grip so that your trigger finger falls naturally to the front trigger (right barrel). As soon as you fire the right barrel, let your finger fall back to the rear trigger. It is more of a thought process to move from rear to front, but practice makes it easier. Never keep another finger resting on the other trigger for a faster second shot; the recoil of the first is likely to make you fire the second barrel unintentionally.

Skeet and trap will also improve your accuracy for birds. If you can consistently score well at skeet with modified and/or full chokes, everything else will become easy.
