Question Dan Wesson 8" .357 Value?

What would be a ball park value on this Dan Wesson .357? Overall, condition is decent. Some freckling here and there. Bore is good.

Hi Hunter8282:

Dan Wessons don't come up for sale very often in this area, but when they do, I usually see them in the $600.00+ range depending on condition and/or accessories. The Pistol Pacs usually are in the $1,200.00+ range. I don't recall ever seeing one for sale with more than one barrel. The scope pictured on the one in your post is an oldie - I don't know if they are still in production or not. So I wouldn't attribute much value to that. If I were buying it, I would probably be interested if it was in the $600.00 - $650.00 range knowing I would have to buy new rings and a scope to get the best performance out of that 8.0 inch long barrel.

Regards,

Dave

My first question would be where is the rear sight. Might be hard to come by a new one.

I noticed that also...I don't know enough about Dan Wessons to figure out if it is a Model 15 (adjustable sights), or a Model 14 (fixed sights).

I also wondered about that rear scope mount, but if I was a buyer, I'd replace the scope and mounts anyway.

Regards,

Dave

Parts are available through CZ-Dan Wesson. To me the older 'scope would add no value. The longer 8' (?) barrels are not as common. This one is the std type; they also made a vent rib much like this one and a vent heavy with the vent and full underdog. Grip looks good, scope mounting leads to questions as Larry mentioned. $450-$600 depending on how bad you want it and that length barrel. Much like a Ruger you don't have to worry much about what loads you shoot in a DW. Ask if they have the barrel tool, as they're ~ 50.00.

This is my dad's gun. He's possibly looking to trade/sell it to get a 9mm. I believe it's a fixed sight model. There is a notch for the rear sight and nothing appears to be missing.

I agree on the scope and mounts. They've always looked off to me. I think if he was going to sell it, I'd just remove it up front as I also think it adds no value.

Thanks for all the info thus far.

Selling his gun and then buying will be a major difference. He may be luck to get 40-45% of it's value in a trade. Ask around, see what the dealer wants, you can then go sell it and have more cash on the 9mm.

P.S. With the rear sight question it may bring less than you want.

It is a Monson Mass built gun, which tended to have a better rep for fit/finish etc.... but yeah, the fixed sight is gonna hurt the value. $400 on a good day, scope adds nothing.

You might post it on the DW forum site, as noted is is a Monson gun and the sights and barrels are available from CZ or EWK arms. If it's a cc weapon you are thinking of why not buy a shorter barrel change it out and keep the long tube also?

Somehow a fixed rear sight on an eight inch gun just doesn't make sense. Perhaps it originally had a shorter barrel.

If the barrel shroud had not been tapped for scope mounts I would say a model 14 as it sits would be worth around 400 as it sits . That looks to be one messed up rear scope mount and front looks loose to so it would be of little value . . Was it dropped ?

I would guess someone may want that for around $300.

Sorry, but the fixed sight 14's get no love, and you've got holes drill in the shroud.
