Default Colt Police Positive

Well, it's not a Smith. . .it's a Colt. I don't buy many of these, but when I see a mint bore and mint cylinders on a gun made in 1914, I grab it pretty fast. It's maybe 70%, but internally like new. I paid $225 for it. You just have to appreciate any gun that survived the black powder/corrosive primer period. . .even a Colt.

Nice one. And a good price. Any markings on it anywhere? It shows the external finish rub-off typical of small-frame police revolvers of the pants-pocket carry era. This (and its PP Special variant) is the gun primarily responsible for S&W's Regulation Police 38 not getting anywhere in the police market for small 38's. Colt got there 10 years earlier.

Yes, it's tough for me to pass up a nice Colt especially when a lot of them are still very affordable.
They don't make them any more so we all should buy them now before prices get really stupid, like the snake guns are now.

Very nice, original grips too! A word of caution, If you intend to shoot it get a set of repop grips to use. I have one in .38 Special that had a very nice set of original grips and first time shooting it, it broke off a chunk-O-grip on the right side where the locator pin is, bummer. Mine is a lot worse for finish as yours but really shoots well despite those tiny sights. Oh yes, what caliber is yours? Enjoy that one!

It's a 38 (the old short S&W) and doesn't have any markings. I'm about to finish up going over it now. Yeah, that rub-off on the sides is so annoying.

Those old Colt's can still shoot. Here's a picture of mine with 2 cylinders put down range. Notice the 2" group on the right - that was single action the other 6 shots were double action.

I had the gun in 32-20 about ten years ago. Paid $60 for it because the interior of the cylinder was messed up and dysfunctional. I fixed it but it took a while. The gun was actually nicer than this 38. Some guy had all this WWII stuff a widow of a German officer brought with her to this country. I traded the gun off even for the stuff. . .did get the better of the deal but wish I had my gun back!

Those old Colts can be pretty cool. I picked up this chopped 1908 Police Positive Special not to long ago. No telling when the barrel was cut but somebody paid to have it done right and the gun refinished. If only they could talk!

Yeah, the grips are repros-

I have a few, including a similar 1919 dated 5" gun. The sights are tiny, but it will hold tight groups and turn in some decent ballistics with the longer barrel.

You've got that right. Picked up a newer model, (made in 1978), Police Positive a few years back. Excellent shape, shoots like a dream.

Repop in general slang use means a "repossession" like a repossessed car or whatever. Why not just say replica grips or reproduction (repro) grips?

Because that would just make too much sense.

Around here 'repo' means repossession. 'Repop' means reproduction. Like Repo Man for the guy repossessing autos.

Another great price on an interesting find, Doc.

Ok fellows, consider me spanked! I meant to type
"repro" instead of "repop" and should have said "stocks" instead of "grips". I will flail myself with a chain for five minutes in penance.

It confuses many that there was a Police Positive with that short frame and the PP Spcl. with longer frame, like the .32-20 seen here. And by the 1970's, there was only the .38 Special chambering, and Colt called it the Police Positive.

I think that's what Donn has. I tried one, but it didn't shoot to the sights and a contemporary Diamondback didn't have enough adjustment in the rear sight. I kept neither.

But the guns handled well, and if you get a good one hang onto it.

Just looked at another one of these guns today at the LGS. . .produced during the same time period. About the same condition. Maybe a tiny bit better. . .$500! No kidding. . .prices have doubled on just about every vintage Colt or Smith in the past year. I had every gun he had in the store and they were all at least double what I paid within the past 2 years; and, most within the past year.

I have an old Colt Police Positive Special that actually shoots pretty well and is in nice shape. I bought it for when cowboy action Wild Bunch side matches allowed any handgun from that era, meaning early 20th century. I haven't shot CAS in awhile and now I think 1911s are de rigeur for Wild Bunch. Anyway, that old Colt is a very cool tool from a bygone era so I understand perfectly why you would acquire one presently. Well done.
