Enjoy it! It's a great little six shooter. Careful with the hot loads. Not too many Colt Smithys around any more.

Nich catch! Great little piece. Enjoy!
Have one just like it but it still has the factory wood grips on it. It's really a pleasure to shoot.

Mine has the factory wood also. A very generous member here supplied a Tyler Tgrip for it and I really like the feel of them. Raises the barrel to a natural point of aim for me, at least.
A before the Tyler shot.

Looks just like the Colt Cobra I carry every day. Sorry S&W fans, I own a Colt DS and a Cobra as well as an S&W Model 36. The Colt snubbies are a notch above the M36.
This doesn't apply to other models, I love my K Frames.

We seem to have similar taste in revolvers. It'll be good company for your Cobra. Below is one I picked up a couple of months back. I'm sure you'll like the Det Spl.
For some reason I can't turn the photo upright? Oh well...

If a K Frame and a J Frame had offspring, it might very well look like the DS. It's the perfect cross between the two.
I carry a 4th issue, it's the one that was reintroduced in the 90's. The different generations can be confusing depending on who you talk to. For instance, I found a true "1st issue" last summer. It was made in 1933, and has the square butt that was discontinued that year. I get lots of info over at that other forum, the one with the pony.
One of the best carry guns ever, and my favorite .38 snubby. Now, go shoot it, you won't be disappointed!

I like the DS. It and the SAA are about the only Colts I really care much for.

Really nice looking little pony. I've got one that makes an occasional trip to the range, otherwise, she spends her life in the safe. After I got it, I did a comparison with my only all steel J-frame in my collection, a Model 649. I've attached photos of my comparison for your review.
Regards,
Dave

DSes are a perfect carry gun. They use the same holster as a 2.25"SP101 Ruger. The old FBI load for a carry load and standard 158 grain bullets for target work will bode you well. Wish Smith would build a 38/357 the size of the DS, very versatile revolver!

Fine weapon. I own three, a really early .38, a middle-aged .32 and a relatively newish .38 with a hammer shroud. I still carry that fairly regularly.

Do NOT let your wife shoot it!
I made that mistake once and it took me more than 20 years to get it back.

I have both a old style DS and a hammer shrouded Cobra, both in very decent condition. Blasphemy here I know but I rather like both of those little blasters! Like other have said repair if necessary could be interesting and be smart in how high in power loads you use.
Enjoy your new gun!

There's always confusion about how many "generations" of Dick Specials exist. Some say three, some say as many as seven. I have only one, from the early 1960s, but it's a beauty. The pre-WWII DSs bring some serious money today. Many might already know this, but the DS is nothing more than a short-barreled version of the Police Positive Special, and were at times available also in .38 S&W and .32 S&W Long (AKA .38 New Police and .32 New Police). Those in .38 S&W also bring some serious money.

You cannot go wrong with a nice little "pony" like that! I only have one, a 68 vintage Agent, if yours shoots like mine you will be a happy camper. Enjoy!

I feel that the Colt short barreled Police Positive Special, aka "The Detective Special," was one of the finest concealment revolvers made. It gives the carrier 6 shots, points almost perfectly, and feels rather hefty and solid in the hand. A real shame that one of the most prolific, iconic and highly regarded and well-known United States industrial manufacturers is but a shell of its former self.... I'm glad that I lived to see it as it once was...

I've had mine since 1999 and it was my every day carry piece until I switched to a Model 10-7. It's a third generation from 1974 and was starting to show some light holster wear. Here's a pic of the DS and my current carry gun. I bobbed the hammer and slicked up the trigger for DAO. Rich
