Picked this up a couple of days ago...Marlin 39A from 1956. It took a while but I finally found a nice one. Rich.

You got a goody! I've had mine since 1959, since it was new. It's surprisingly accurate, lot of fun to shoot. I bought mine from the local hardware store, took it to my grandparents' place up the country. I walked about a quarter mile down the road to show it to their neighbors' son, who I knew was a hunter and my age. He saw me coming and walked up the lane from his house and met me at the mailbox on the road, and we talked while he looked over my new prize. Then he said - "Hear that?" I heard a squawking, scratching noise - and he pointed out a squirrel fussing on the side of a tree down at the end of the lane, about a hundred yards away. He said "Take a shot and see if you can scare him." I threw the rifle up, squinted over the sights, fired, and that squirrel dropped like a stone. Jack's dog scooped up the squirrel and gulped it down, so we never saw where I hit him. All the same, Jack was very impressed with my marksmanship, and I never told him it was my first ever shot out of that rifle.
Some things are best left as is.
The hammer fall is a little heavy, but it feels like a real, grown up rifle. Enjoy shooting it! I still do after all these years.

Here's mine that I found last November. Its a 1968 LNIB. I don't see too many of this vintage that still have the box. It still has the price on the box, $73.88. Here it is with a couple of 27s I scored on the same day.

That is a nice one hoosier4guns. A few years ago I bought a 39M, my
favorite version, from a LGS for a pretty decent price. I knew it was an
older model and the condition was pretty good but not quite as nice
as yours. When I got it home and checked on the mfg date by the
serial number I was surprised to see that it was made in 1957, a little
older than I expected. In 1957 I was still watching the old western
movies on our black and white tv and longing for my first real gun.
A Marlin model 39 from the mid 50s is a great find.

Update on the Marlin 39A. In my post it is evident that the prior owner installed a sling stud right in the bullseye and it was missing the front sight hood. It looked OK but I just had to get it back to it's original condition so I replaced the bullseye and put on a sight hood. Here's a couple of pics.
