Colt Agent
I'd been looking for a Cobra then this thing jumped out and hit me in the wallet.
A recent NYPD retiree at my gun club was unloading his guns and offered this one at $300.
What are the correct grips for this Agent?

I had one when they first came out. They had wooden, "magna-like" grips standard. It got traded long ago.

Very nice gun to a very attractive price. I had one and it never let me down. If they are made in 1985 and up they are good for +P ammo.
The factory grips were either checkered walnut or smooth wood.

This is an example of the smooth type on a earlier Agent. It's somewhat of a 'bitsa' and, I'm sure, the stocks aren't original to the gun.
Great price on the little Colt. Some of the later Det Spl came with the rubber grips but I don't know if that was true for the later underlug Agents.

That appears to be one of the newer ones with the parkarized finish. I frequently carry an older one that has the hammer shroud. The original wood stocks are really poor ergonomically and the Goodyears are there for a reason.
Sort of like carrying a J frame except it holds six rounds.

The Goodyears actually feel "right" on this gun, I suppose Chris knew what he was doing when he carried it.
I like the added round, and it's light as heck.

my EDC carry gun is one of the last parkerized Agents like yours 133XX I bought it from a deputy who was retiring back in 1985 or 86.. it came with Pachy presentation grips just like yours... it was my understanding they were original... I paid $115 for it back then.. he asked me to pass it along to another young deputy who needs a good off duty gun & who is scrimping like I was back then..for the same price when we are done with it.. mine was dehorned... with the front sight ground down & it has the factory bobbed hammer... though I had to whittle on the grips until a speed loader would work with them on...

Pachmayr makes a compacts that Colt put on a lot of the last DSes and Agents. They fill the hand and give the Colt a natural pointing posture that helps orient the two inch barrel. Bout 20 bucks for the Compacts. They are also a great deal easier to conceal.
The holsters for the Colt DSes/Agents/Cobras will interchange with Ruger 2.25" SP 101 holsters. Some J frame holsters will work others won't. Colt authorized +P for the Agents newer than 73, you can tell cause they have the barrel shroud. 1,500 rds then sent to the factory for checking for frame stretching and timing issues. Several good non +P 38 loads out there. Gun is regulated for 158 grain bullets. They are very accurate snubbies with the bonus of 6 rounds. K frame speedloaders work! Hope this helps

Don’t have it yet so I don’t know when it was made, but it’s brite blue instead of parkerized. I suspect a ‘70’s gun. I’ll carry +P but shoot standard stuff that I reload with 158 gr. copper plated Berry or Extreme bullets. Believe me even standard aren’t pleasant to shoot!

Picked up Agent, polished blue, checkered walnut stocks, built 1975. Nice shape, no crack in the frame, no push off, nice trigger both SA and DA. I’m pleased with it. Gonna clean it up and shoot ASAP.

My Colt's Agent came with the plain wood stocks shown below on the left.
The holster is a Crump paddle. The belt by Culver. The silver Navajo
buckle by Nezzie.
I removed the hammer spur and the single action notch to make it DAO.
Installed the Craig Spegel extended boots shown in the photo 2nd from
left. Custom gator trim holster by KD, belt by Culver. Knife is a Bear.
3rd from left is the Agent all alone.

+P is ok on early 70’s guns. Anything that has the ejector shroud.

Below is mine, I bought it in mid 1980s. It came with the smooth walnut grips
Which fit nicely. I did change them for Pachmayr when I started using it as a nightstand gun, I found the Pach's are "sticky" and easier to hang on to, speed loader doesn't work with them but that's ok. I keep a semi auto near by.
I don't shoot it much, but, so far it has been flawless.

My understanding is that Colt asked that you return steel framed guns after 3000 rds or 1000 rds of +P for alloy D frames. I do know that I put 15,000 rds thru a 1972 Diamondback, it got smoother the longer it went. I won’t live long enough to put 1000 rds of +P thru this one, but I do intend to carry +P. No worries. I have a Glock 17 Gen 5 that I’ve got 1100 rds thru no problems. I expect no problems with the Agent. Glock is a house and range gun, 17 vs 6, but I’ll carry the Agent. Those 2” D frames in 2” kick hard! Thanks for your replies
