Default lacking experience here. What's the issue with Century Aks?

Hey this is probably inviting the devil so to speak, but I'm getting pretty curious. I got bored with ARs and came across a Century Arms Import WSAR at what seemed like a fine price to me. After doing further research everyone says it's junk. I've shot it plenty, had no issues. Just trying to figure out what it is that every dislikes and considers junkie with the Romania built AK platform? What is the real difference?

They are not junk. There was a time when CAIs QC was horrible. That was when there were tons of kits flooding into the country and WASRs were $300 guns. There were lots of poor fit and finish and lots of canted sights that were so off you could not zero the rifle.

These days the QC is much better. With the price of other AKs sky rocketing they are a good value these days. Check the build date and check out the rifle you are buying and if it checks out go for it. Its an AK not a precision instrument. LOL

It's not the WASR that's junk it's Century's in house ,home made AKs that are.

WASR does suffer from minor issues but some of them are either misunderstood or very minor and not specific to just the WASR.
1.People complain about the finish. Coming from a military factory it'd not going to have fancy finish and to me any kind of finish is something I don't particularly care or look for. Most of my guns are finish challenged to begin with. Lots of use, lots of wear.
2. Mag wobble. Some are worse than others but that's Century's fault. Rifle is imported by US laws to have a single stack mag well. If Century spent an extra 10 seconds and some careful outlining they can have a proper mag well. But as it is Century drunken monkeys just dremel away till it fits. BTW, most of the time the wobble is minor and does not effect function or accuracy.
3. Canted sights. This is all on the plant. They should have better QC and most of the time they do but there are instances where the rifle seemed to have been built either on a Friday afternoon or a Monday morning after a weekend of binge drinking. However, they are not the only ones. The $1000 Arsenals from Bulgaria suffer the same problem.

Generally speaking it's a military rifle made with military parts on machines that have been making AKs for decades. With accuracy good enough for center mass at 300 yards. In other words combat accurate

Here's a re imported Romanian RPK. came back from guard duty in Afghanistan

I bought my Century SAR-1 in 2001. It works fine but appears to have been assembled by angry beavers; the drunken monkeys must have had the day off.

Ok, that makes sense. I paid 800 but got 12 mags all full of wolf poly and about 200 more boxed rounds. There is some mag wobble, but nothing that concerns me. Sights are dead on to 100 yards anything past that I'd definitely blame myself. So that's good to know.

Thanks a bunch guys.

Just to clear it up Century only MAKES the RAS and the C39. Everything else they import. All the SARs, WUMs, WASR, GP, WASR 10/63 are basically all the same rifle made and imported under different names

Ok, thanks. So I'll probably avoid those if I were to buy another. Just saw the picture, those are some nice looking guns. I can't wait to finish the wood on mine.

Glad to hear it's not a malfunction waiting to happen.

I've got a reworked 1960 Polish with a milled receiver that came thru Century, tight and very accurate. It's been 100% with good and not so good ammo.

A few mods since then:

I've got a Century C39V2 that I am very pleased with. Well put together-no magazine wobble no canted sights- nicely put together weapon. I LIKE the 7.62x39 round-would love if Ruger would make a bolt action for it.

I also had a C39V2 that ran like a sewing machine.

Might I suggest the CZ 527 for a 7.62 bolt gun? Outstanding rifle. Well made.

Beats me why Savage haven't done so by now. Their manufacturing technique is so flexible I can only assume that it is some weird corporate thinking that stops them marketing such a weapon.

Those mini-Mausers from Yugoslavia appear on the auction sites occasionally, but prices are high.

I'll say that my Century Arms WASR is nothing short of awesome. Perhaps they all weren't, but I have no complaints at all with mine.

I once had 150 Hungarian AMD 65s (full auto) and 750,000 rounds of 7,62x39 ammo. They came from Century Arms.

Of course, I was in charge of training at a regional police academy in northeastern Afghanistan at the time.
