Default Remington 700 Question

Just bought a Remington 700 ADL last week in .308 Win and looking to get it a bit more accurate.. Don't want to spend a crazy amount of money to do it, but was wondering if free floating the barrel and/or getting a bedding job would be worth the money.. Plan on using it for hunting deer and taking farther coyote shots that my AR can't get as well as just taking some long range shots at my buddies farm to challenge myself.. Going to try to make long range shooting a hobby or just improve my skill..

Thanks

Accuracy steps: glas bed action to 1.5" ahead of recoil lug. Install target trigger. Lightly lap barrel. Check to see if new muzzle crown is needed. Mount one piece scope mount base. Install good scope. Start reload program using top quality components. Do benchrest quality uniforming of all brass cartridges to be used in accuracy tests. Use benchrest quality bullets. Determine contact point of bullet to lands. Back off and find sweet spot off the lands. Use a quality benchrest with proper front rest and sandbags. Shoot only with no wind condition. Don't shoot more than 5 shots without cool down and light barrel clean. Heavy clean if any hint of copper fouling.

Start with known accuracy reload formulas for powder, primer, bullet.

Use top quality ear protection. Never drink excess coffee or cokes before shooting. Get a really good recoil pad installed. Use a shoulder padded shooting vest or coat.

A more serious step would be to have the barrel pulled and the action blueprinted before re-installation of barrel. Note; if I went this far I would be changing to a moderate heavy barrel from a known accuracy rifle barrel maker. ........

For Deer hunting you probably don't need to do anything to your rifle.
As mentioned above free floating and glass bedding along with good
handloads will probably help. Going much beyond that will probably
cost you more than the initial price of your rifle. You sound more like
a casual shooter than a serious benchrest shooter looking to reduce
group size from 1/2" to 7/16" regardless of cost. If you're that
interested in accuracy you need two rifles.

If it will shoot 3" or less 5-shot groups at 100 yards, that's plenty good enough for normal deer hunting use. Unless you are a bench rest shooter, a long-range hunter, or a professional sniper, don't worry about getting those 1 moa groups. If you are a reloader, the easiest thing to do is to experiment some and develop a load which shoots well.

If your rifle is a newer(less than 5 years old)Remington 700, it may take a lot of tinkering to get to shoot as well as you would like. Remington's quality has really tanked the past few years. If you have one from a decade or so ago, you done good. Bedding the action like Big Cholla said never hurts and sometime is just what the doc ordered. For deer hunting , if it shoots around an inch at 100 yards, that should be good to go.

Remington's of late are just as accurate as older ones. I have an adl in 243 and all I have done is put it in a fee floating stock and is a tac driver. I can group 3 shots in a half dollar size group. And that's with a poor optic. Once I get some money together and buy a vortex I am sure I can improve on that and add some distance.

snm8510 Like others covered , new remingtons can be iffy . What kind of accuracy do you get now and what's long distance to you ? What scope are you using now and what ammo or handload have you tried ?

Your AR should or could be in the same class as your 308 as far as range and accuracy go for coyote . Both cartidges are capable of comparable 500 yard groups . With the right barrel and ammo the AR15 is just as capable of taking coyote at 350 yards and shooting as tight a group as the 308.

Problems for both would be assuming both rifles are decent quality, knowing the range to a target and having the skills to make the shot with the right ammo for the barrel twist .

Now what you need to do to your rifle to make it better is purely a guess . Maybe bedding and blocks well help , a different ammo , better scope , different shooter as all that is an unknown .

I have a old 308 788 Remington I bought new in 1976 and its still a 3 shot 1.25" moa hunter today with my hunting ammo of choice . Only upgrade has been a trigger change . I have a hienze 57 ar15 with a 1-8 twist 16" 223 wylde chamber criterion chrome bore barrel and 3lb trigger and both use a 2.5-10 scope , with federal 69gr gm match is a solid 1/2 moa shooter . My hunting limit for both is 350 yards . I use a leica 1000 yards range finder to help and cheat sheets for bullet drop on the firearms .

I bought a new one about two years ago and found the poly stock was too flexible and it actually would touch the barrel while on a sand bag on the bench. I was getting 2 inch groups at 100 yards, ok but not where I wanted to be. I found a Bell Carlson with the aluminum internal frame on sale and switched over. My groups tightened up to 1/2 inch at 100 yards with factory ammo.

Later I added a Timney Trigger at #3 mainly do to the voluntary recall Rem had going and I didn't want to send it back.

A long time ago I bought a Ruger ultralight in 243 with the idea that it would be a mountain rifle and a prairie dog plinker. It shot 2" groups with factory ammo.....
I took up reloading and in no time at all I had a one moa deer load and a 3/4" varmint load.nothin to it Remington 700 Question

I would suggest shooting it first before doing anything. It may be just fine for your needs as is. I would suggest the Sierra 165gr soft nose spitzer, a good accurate bullet "in most .308's" for a all around bullet for a .308 Win.

I would also suggest shooting it first. I picked up a 700 ADL in .270 a couple of years ago. It has the factory camo synthetic stock. I mounted a Nikon Pro Staff 3-9 scope in the one piece Talley rings to keep the weight down. Nothing else was done to this rifle. With my handloads it shoots at about 1 MOA.

Wink

A parallax-free scope is as important as the rest of your pieces of the puzzle, and usually overlooked until last!!!
