Default mod. 1917 .45

A guy in my club is selling a 1917 it has a 11.75" barrel. looks like it's in the white from the photo he posted. There is no visable finish. He is billing it as stainless steel but I know that isn't possible. I beleve it was stripped of or polished etc. It has a large ramp/partrige front sight set back from the muzzel. There is no lug under the barrel to brace the ejector rod. I have never seen one like this. Does anybody know this variation? I am traveling and am unable to inspect the gun at this time.

That's a Colt 1917 that has had the finish buffed off, and some aftermarket barrel fitted. Looks like a good parts gun if you could get it for $50.

No Colt 1917 left the factory like that. It's one I would buy for $100 or less if there are no other problems as a DIY project gun.

I don't think that Colts had a lug for the ejector rod to begin with so I wouldn't worry about that. However every other aspect of the gun is suspect.

If I could shoot it and it was an awesome shooter I might be willing to pay $200 for it. If all I could see was that picture I'd offer $50.

I wouldn't be surprised if the seller wants $500+ because of how rare it is and the "awesome" custom job. If that is the case run away from it.

many years back I saw one similar that had a Thompson barrel that had been turned down and threaded to fit a colt 1917. it was built by a gunsmith that leaned his trade in the navy in WWII. it was a very accurate gun and he would not even talk about selling it. lee

Can you post a link to that colt forum thread? If not, do you remember the point of the post and aprox. how long ago it was posted. I have been in contact with the seller and he knows less than nothing about anything. I am being kind and will leave it at that. Thanks, TonyR

As someone who also collects colts, mostly single actions, I can tell you that at the least there is 250 dollars worth of parts. Maybe more depending on how badly they buffed the frame.
Personally 150 would be my tops, and that would only be if I needed parts for a 1917 or a new service. Or if I wanted a project

I don't know what that would be worth, but I picked up a 1917 Colt a couple years ago for $179
It has a short barrel (probably not original) and I think probably refinished somewhere in the distant past.
It locks up tight though and is mechanically solid.
If that one is cheap enough, I'd buy it just for fun

I looked for it but can't locate the thread. I remember that the poster had no idea it was even a Colt. The thread was early this year.

Thats him, he insists that it is a Smith&Wesson made of Stainless Steel and won't hear anything else. Claims to be a retired machine design engineer and knows the difference between stainless and carbon steel. I sent him photos of both guns to compare against his and he still won't budge. Says it all original. I told him to look for the Colt DA 45 roll engraving on the barrel. He wrote me back that " That the Smith & Wesson model 1917 in 400 stainless steel has been sold and is no longer in his possession" He is not in touch with reality. Oh well, it is sold.

It looks like it spent many happy hours up against a wire wheel.
