A little history, maybe?
I picked this Ruger .44 Carbine up recently and have been looking at these "notches" in the buttplate.
They are pretty regularly spaced, not like a chattering mark from a vehicle rack or such.
I wonder if its notches tapped into it with a knife blade for the deers taken?
It's nice to think so.

Could be the times he went to sleep while squirrel hunting. Maybe the deer he missed because the gun don't shoot straight. Many possibilities. Larry

If I missed 11 times because the gun didn't shoot straight, I wouldn't use a knife, I'd use an axe!

It will take a LOT of deer, but sooner or later you will have it checkered!
Good luck!!

I don't believe I have heard of notching a buttplate. But the notches(?) appear to be very regularly spaced, so there must have been some reason for them.

one of my uncles bought one when they first came out, if it's his that is how many years he took it hunting without shooting at a deer.
