Default Remington 40x 6mm

I just picked this one up and wasn't familiar with it or its history. It is a single shot 6mm, bull barrel, super light trigger. (Has to be around a pound or so. From what I understand, it was a competitive benchrest rifle. Any more opinions on it? I will probably replace the scope plus I reload 6mm so ammo isn't an issue. Any guess at the date of birth? Serial # 329**
Thanks

I bought a new one almost exactly like that (my for end was straight cut) in 22-250 in about 1968. It was my groundhog gun for years. It always shot sub 1/2 minute groups with IMR 3031 and Sierra bench rest bullets. Enjoy your find.

Look at the letters on the left side of the barrel in front of the receiver that will give you the month and date of manufacture. You can get the codes at Remington's web site.

Very nice rifle. The 6mm is one of my favorite Remington cartridges. I am sure it is a tack driver. As I understand it, all 40x rifles went thru the Custom Shop and lots of attention was heaped on them to ensure high accuracy before leaving Ilion.

Yep, The 40X was made to be a benchrest gun.
Super accurate with handloads.
Have fun with yours shooting those one ragged hole groups.

Almost looks like the forend was cut so it rode the front bag better. My old 40X had a more rounded forend. Or maybe a later design?

Those were at one time probably THE most accurate out of the box rifles produced.

Had one just like it. Wonderful rifle and great cartridge. I regularly shot Rock Chucks in So. Utah for years with it out to 600 yds. Depending on how satisfied you are with the obtainable accuracy today, you might consider finding a good rifle-smith and have the barrel set back a couple of threads and rechambered. That will freshen up the 'leade' and undoubtedly give you greater accuracy. Also, while the barrel is off the action, have the muzzle re-crowned. I have 'improved' the accuracy of many barrels that were trailing off in once great accuracy by doing those two jobs. ...........

It looks like the barrel has already been shortened, and as previously mentioned, the forend cut at an angle (for weight reduction?).
The 6X Lyman suggests possibly a "Hunter" class or "Local rules" type of competition (10 lbs.) Does the action have a magazine cut, which would be necessary in NBRSA or IBS Hunter classes?
You might also check the twist rate, as 10" and 12" were both offered and may predicate bullet selection.
Hope it shoots as well for you as my 40Xs do for me.

My best buddy had one and had the barrel set back (was a 308) and was rechambered for a wildcat based on the 308 cartridge sort of a shortened 308. For the life of me cannot remember what it was called. Anyway he used to shoot hunter benchrest and I seem to remember that they limited scope power to 6 power. Spent many a weekend shooting with him.Sadly he passed away due to cancer and all his firearms probably went to his relatives. Thanks for the memories. Frank
