Great looking knife but I could never understand
the purpose of the design.
This one is a 1986 mfg.

The purpose of the design.

The heavy forward portion of the blade puts the weight out on the end so when you swing the blade it has more momentum.
That portion also has a heavier bevel and the edge will stand up to more abuse especially when used to stab.

The double curve is there so that there is more cutting edge on the blade and as it is swung the struck material is forced to slide on the inside edge. If a blade is 12" long and a double curve it I can make it have say 14" of cutting edge.

The thinner inside portion is designed to cut and slice better

That portion on the back is sharp you can back cut with it.

The grooved curve right in front of hilt is for thumb rest

Handle has birds head and texture for grip

Another take on a jungle/survival fighting knife/dagger.

I have made single edged choppers for cutting competitions in a similar manner for the weight forward design.

Interestingly, the original daggers actually did not have sharpened cutting edges. They were more like spikes either triangular or square in cross section. Designed to pierce chain mail and light armor. The flattening and cutting edges came considerably latter in the evolution of fighting knives.

The Puma White Hunter was designed by a committee and it shows. But the back edge is for hacking and rougher cutting, and the wide flat on the blade is for pounding. Their literature has described that for many years. The small saw teeth are for starting cuts in sausages, fruit, and the like.

Puma was first imported here in 1957 by the Guttmann Co.

Well, I don't have the Puma "White Hunter" like Xfuzz posted, but I do have the Puma "Hunter's Pal", with a 4" blade, made in 1973 and never used:

And I also have a Puma "Hunter's Friend", made in 1968, and used a great deal. It has the 4 3/4" blade.

I have enjoyed checking out all of the various knives on this thread. Great stuff!!!

Best Regards, Les

Mauser:

That is the same dilemma that I have with my Smith and Wessons. I'll find one from the fifties that has never been carried, and the first thing I want to do is shoot it. But I know if I do, that it will lose value. That's one reason that I try to collect guns that have been "lightly used", so that I can shoot away with a clean conscience, and not lose money. I'm still on the fence about the "Pal". BTW... It has a mint sheath also, and the original green and yellow plastic box, I just didn't photograph them.

Thanks for the input

Best Regards, Les

That's a beauty!!! And you have the earlier sheath as well. Nice knife. I know that I must be stuck in the past, but just like the old Smiths and Colts, these fine knives from another era really appeal to me. I have some newer knives as well, but a kraton handle just doesn't have the magic of sambar stag, even if it works better. I also love the stacked leather of the old service knives and bayonets. I'm just an anachronism.

Best Regards, Les

I really like the Cherry handles and that mirror polish on the 103 (my favorite pattern) is making me drool on my keyboard.

Lots of nice knives pictured here, I don't have any custom knives but do have a drawer full of NIB Puma's. Below are some of the rarer pocket knives in my collection, I guess you could say they were designed/built for animal husbandry/grooming.

Gelder-used for, well you know..

Horse Trekker-for maintenance/care of hooves

Default A few of my favorites

I am a fan of Benchmade knives as you can see. They work well and just feel good in my hand. Do not feel right walking out the door without an pocket knife of some sort. More often than not some hardware on the hip too.

The Bianchi has been with me for about 30 years or so. It was a constant woods companion and it never let me down.

My everyday utility knife, my Buck 110

This little patch knife I made from the antler of a 4 pointer that hit my Jeep five years ago.

The Pilgrim defined the OOSIK, but I have a question: Back in 1953 or
maybe 1954 we were having a drink with an old Sourdough in his cabin
up at Big Lake. Asked him what the odd looking swizzle sticks were.
He said they were bear penises. At the time I thought he was putting
us on. Maybe not. Do you know? I have killed mature black bears but
never thought to check anatomical feature.

I never saw a swizzle stick of a bears penis, but, some folks around here South Louisiana used to make "toothpicks" out of dried Racoon penises. I was told that in some countries in Latin America the dried penis of bulls were used to make a sort of riding crop, favored by prison guards to whip the prisoners, it was supposed to be very painful. Hence he name of a strong blow in Spanish "un vergaso" verga is slang for penis.
I was told in both cases that a weight was tied at the end to stretch it as the cut off penis was being dried.
Enough!

Got a couple of nice ones. First image top is a Ruana, second is My design built by Jerry Widner of CoSpgs, next two are both Corbet Sigman, top a general purpose, bottom a hunter. Second image top is a McDearmont sub hilt fighter, next is a 70's Morseth and the bottom is a Sog Seal.

Swizzle stick and tooth picks are made from a penis bone. Raccoon bones are one of the largest. Moonshiners use them to plug the hole the shine drips from.

The bull walking sticks are made from the whole penis stretched with a weight and dried.

A gentleman by the name of Bob Ham in Payson, Arizona made this one. He said he considers it a utility/general use design. I bought this one because the blade shape and grind is similar to that of some Seguine knives I remembered pictured in an old G&A annual from years ago. Bob says he uses ATS34 or 154CM hardened to 60/61.

These two knives ( a full skinner and a semi- skinner ) were made by Herman Schnrider of Laguna Niguel Ca. back in the mid eighties. They were sent along with a buffalo nickel to master engraver Marcello Pedini.

A couple of not nearly so nice photos.
