1917 Erfurt 9mm Luger auction find
Saw this on a local estate auction listing and took a chance since there was no pre inspsection as it was internet bidding only. Pictures were pretty vague and showed alot of surface rust and no magazine. Cleaned up OK - Bore is excellent with no pits or frosting as was common in the corrosive ammo era - Numbers matching including the magazine. Grips have shrunk some with age but the checkering is still sharp. Looks like it was poor storage that caused the rust. Inside still had gooie cosmoline in it. Functions perfectly. Like I said I took a chance and @ $297 I think it was worth it.

Just a handful of the parts from that gun are worth more than $297; and, you got the whole gun.

That magazine is worth anywhere from 150-200 bucks as long as the other side looks as good as the side shown and the base has no cracks. I would advise spending the 30 dollars for a MecGar and put that one away. Nice catch!

My SWAG is that if the numbers match, the finish is original and good, and the bore is good, you have about a $1500-1800 gun there.

It may just be the photo, but that almost looks like a Russian dipped gun.

My camera is not the best. Finish is original with some of the fire blue still in spots. All the proof marks and parts numbers are clear and strong. The surface rust has left some spots and the grip frame is mostly brown. Not a cherry but a great piece for what I paid IMHO.

I did not take pictures before I cleaned it up as I hosed it down with penetrating oil as soon as I got it back to the truck and let it soak for the 30 minute drive home. The attached auction pictures show the good side. The off side not shown had even more rust on it. As you can see from the pictures I did not know there was a magazine with it as there is none shown. With no inspection privilages prior to the auction I just took a chance. Did not figure my $270 bid + 10% buyers premium would hold up. Estate auctions in Missouri are handled like a FTF private party purchase.

Unfortunately at some point this Luger was partially or completely reblued. The trigger, td lever, safety, magazine release and ejector should all be strawed. I'd still pay $297 all day long for one like this.

Up to about 1936 Lugers were rust blued and the inside of the frame should be in the white. If it's blue, it was dipped for sure.

You pretty much bought a magazine and got a free pistol. Not quite, but close!

A10: not only cobwebs but it had a bunch of white feathers under the grips and all up in evrery nook and crany of the frame. Looked like chicken feathers to me - maybe the previous owner stored it in the chicken coop or in his pillow. From the amount of rust is was probably the chicken coop. Will never know as the previous owner passed and the relatives were selling everything to settle the estate.

A $300 Luger,,matching numbers and an exc bore,,! Grab all you can find.
btw, that cross cut notch on the top front edge of the r'cvr ring is common on Erfurt mfg.
They made both the short bbl model and the Artillery model. The Artillery uses a bbl mounted rear sight that needs that small cross cut in the ring for it to sit down all the way.
Erfurt decided early on in War production to just make all their frames with that cut. Then they wouldn't have to segregate frames for the two different models or get caught short of frames if orders spiked unexpectedly for one or the other.
Nice find,,Save the magazine,,get a Mecgar and take it out and shoot it.
