Engraved Colt Single Action
When my late friend, gunsmith/engraver Frank Leaman engraved this gun for me in the 1980s, I showed him a picture in the Time/Life book "The Gunfighters" and said do it just like that but for a shorter barrel. I finally took a good picture of it. Later he engraved another one to match.

That's just might be the best looking evgraved handgun I've ever seen!!!
And, I'm not even a big evgraving fan.
So well done, but not overly so.
Should you ever decide to part with it. .....
Well done sir!

He also engraved my name (in my signature!!) on each backstrap, so i guess I'm stuck with them. I, too don't like overdone engraving. I think bare areas enhance the engraved areas while full coverage gives no place to focus on and it is so distracting.

That's a beautiful example of the engraver's art. The Colt SAA, with its flowing lines and soft angles, lends itself well to engraving.
What also catches my eye on these guns are the grips. They're beautifully done and appear thicker than normal. The horse head is the finishing touch...a nice change of pace from the ubiquitous steer head with ruby eyes.

It took a while to find another set of stag compatible with the first ones. They have a look all their own, too, as do all stags. Below is the first gun making my "Patton" pair. Top gun a rebuilt .45 from 1920. Bottom gun 1957.
Other side of the 1920 gun. The engraver made me a scrimshaw tool but I never had the heart to put a horse head to match his on this one. I just like the tones of the stag undistracted.

Engraver Frank Leaman died some years back. I think your gun is pretty scarce as is and after market engraving might actually distract from the value on that one. I remember him engraving nickel guns, though, and do it right through the nickel with no refinishing. They looked great but the engraving felt sharp to the touch.

Thanks Wyatt,
Yeah i guess only 6-700 were made nickel .357 short barrels.
But the engraving on yours was outstanding.
Takes an ordinary nickel SAA up to BBQ gun status.....haha
I would still like to find an old school engraver willing to
take on a project.
Chuck

If that is your "Daily Yard Gun", would you mind showing us what you wear to the BBQ?
Seriously, that is one of the nicest looking rig and gun outfits that I have seen. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Best Regards, Les

Thank YOU sir! Dave is an almost indescribable artistic leather genius. That gun has been shot 1,000s of times. It is part of me.

Lee's,
Another outstanding example. Beautiful craftsmanship.
Old Dave made me a cowboying rig a few years back and
he knows his way around a cow hide for sure.
I also want to see what your BBQ or Sunday go to church gun looks like.
Chuck

As I have posted before and am reluctant to harp on, I am a 3 time cancer survivor. Everyday is my BBQ and Sunday dress up gun day. At my age I don't know how many are left but I'm goin out in style! The rig I usually use is being replaced by this one that Dave let me have. In a year or so it should have a little character. Ya'll get this way stop in, there's lotsa scratched up shooters here, we'll bust a few off.

Good for you! I'm just a beginner... Only a one time survivor, but it was a doozy, so I have some idea of what you mean, and how one's philosophy tends to let's say, mature a little. I have bought and enjoyed more guns in the four years since my little go around, than in a decade before then. I intend to enjoy the things I like while I can, and after all, as far as money goes, you can't take it with you, so might as well enjoy what you like right now.
I admire your attitude!!
Best Regards, Les
