Real or fake??
A friend brought this over for identification. I don't know much about knives but it appears to be a Camillus Navy Utility Mk 1.
The only markings are as shown below. No sheath.
It is in such nice condition I'm wondering if they are making replicas. If so, how can you tell what you have...?
(and any guess as to value would be much appreciated)

How much did he pay for it? Half a million would be too much and a sign of a fake. But how much do those things go for? Things in nice condition are everywhere.

With all the war time shortages, and people going without things to support the war effort. They sure did make a lot of the things they did make.
Still brand unused ww2 surplus showing up 70+ years later.

Mark 1's are an interesting study. Known as deck knives, most if not all were issued to sailors. There are many manufactures of this model and many variations. Camillus was one of the most prolific makers. Pommels were made from plastic, wood, rubber, steel and aluminum. This knife has a sabre grind blade but most blades had a flat grind. Some blades were parkerized and some left bright. Some sheaths were leather others plastic. A friend was issued a Pal Mark 1 when serving in the navy in 1966. Neat pieces of history.

The fibreglass sheath is worth $50 by itself. If it is decent.

Quite nice Dick. The Pal's were the most common Mark 1 made. Virtually no variants. I am partial to these flat ground blades. These were produced only through WW 2 and so many were produced that cases of un-issued Pal's still show up no and then. A friend was issued a new Pal in 1966. Great blades and quite rugged.

I picked up a couple of Ka-Bar utility knives a while back at an auction. One is a Navy MK2 and the other is USMC. I'm not into knives but can't help myself when it comes to military history. I also have a nice utica from Vietnam...traded a buddy some ammo for it. The two Ka-Bar's went for $94. Here are a few pics. Rich
