Default Thinking of a new rifle, in 22-250. Input please?

I like the ballistics of the 22 250 round and thinking of a new Savage, maybe a model 12 bolt action but open to other brands. And since my B'day is in two months I thought I better start dropping hints soon.

Thoughts?

Just a great caliber I have owned one since the mid 60's. My latest or rather last purchase was a Ruger 77 Varmint with a 6-18 Redfield scope that I bought new in 1977. Well worth reloading to tune a round to your barrel. If I were going to sub any cartridge for a 22-250, it would be the 6mm Remington, but you cannot go wrong with your choice

There are some nice looking used winchester 70's and Remington 700's out there. Checkout GA, GB, AA, JOESALTeR.com.

The 22-250 is the finest varmit round ever developed. The woodchuck actually hears the trigger click and gets back in his hole before the bullet arrives. With the 4,000fps of the 22-250 speed is the key to getting rid of this pesky animal. I built a 1893 DWM 7mm Mauser for my varmit gun but the round is too much I may down load it.

The Savages seem very accurate for the price. Nice thing abt the 22-250 is you can down load it to 22 hornet velocities. Makes the gun very versatile, Larry

I own two Remington 700 rifles in .22/250, a BDL Varmint and a ADL sporter in a laminated stock. The cartridge rocks, you will enjoy it immensely. You might also look at the Howa 1500.

Savages are amazingly accurate out-of-the-box rifles so I'd say you're GTG since you're already considering one.

I use a Winchester model 70 HB Varmint in 22-250. Without a doubt the most accurate rifle I own out to 400 yards. I load with 37.5 grains of H 380 powder pushing a 52 gr. Sierra bullet. I doubt the ground hogs ever hear it....splatt.

I just took in a Remington Model 700 in 22-250 that's in excellent condition(some stock scruffing). If there is no interest shown it will be going to the gun show next month. If anyone here is interested contact me.

Great round, I've got an 1980 700 BDL Varmint Special that's scary accurate.

I have a model 700 varmint in 22-250. It is ridiculously accurate and can reach out there, with the right scope.

I have a CZ American in 22-250 and it's an awesome varmint rifle. I love the round and agree its one of the best out there for the job.

CZ 550 American with a Mauser action and claw extractor.

I have a Remington 700 ADL sporter that is scary accurate with handloads and a Stohl Panda action mated to a Llija 1 in 16 twist in 22-250 improved that puts 50's out around 4900 if it stays together. More accurate around 4400. A lot of the factory class bench rest shooters at the club shoot savage. Probably 75%. Good choice unless You can find a 700 varmint in good condition.

While my present favorite 22-250 is a Ruger 77 V, from 72' or so; the Remington 700 BDL was at the top of the heap when considering looks and function.

The round is not legal for deer in most counties of my state, and a touch loud for most semi-urban settings, but even with factory loadings it is "minute of groundhog" accurate way out there.

What you gonna be gunning for S C ?

I have two Remington 700 VS heavy barrel varmint ones. Many a Prairie dog has fallen out to past 500 yards. They need an 18 to 20X scope to take advantage of them. The Savage aren't too bad, but the Remington are better.

Great caliber for varmints and light game. Probably good for antelope, too - nice, flat shooting round. I know folks who use them on whitetails (can't use .22 caliber everywhere). If that's your plan then it's a great choice.

I have not owned a Savage varmint gun. I read lots of good stuff. I had an early black plastic stocked one in 243, terrible trigger and the action slid around in the stock like it had worms.

I forgot on my list in the Varmint gun thread a Rem 700 ADL in sporter weight, it was vry accurate, killed a few coyotes and vermin, it was legal in MO, I took some deer with it. It jellied the lungs. They would take a few steps like a prize fighter out on his feet and collapse.

I knew at some point an Elmer Keith raking shot would cost me a deer so I went back to 270 and 30 cal deer rifles for the most part.

I debated between a 22-250 and a Ruger 220 swift back in the 70's and went with the Swift.
.495 5 shot groups at 100 YDS.
3895 5 shot adv MV with a 52 gr HP.
Did wonders on PA groundhogs....

Great round!

You can readily use it for everything smaller than elk.

Look for older Remington ADL's and BDL's: they tend to be wonderfully accurate.
