Anybody Else Here Into High grade .22's...??
I am!
I can't get enough of 'em.
I love lookin' at 'em.
I love fondling' 'em.
I love buyin' them.
And I Love Shootin' 'em!!
I'll dole 'em out one at a time.
Here is my absolute favorite and I have never seen or heard of another. I saw one came up a few years ago that was a Magnum and I shoulda jumped on it!
My Kleinguenther K22...:
So, beautiful and a tack driver! All Kleinguenther's were guaranteed 1 moa out of the box with good ammo. This one is no different.

I've had a couple of Anschutz, which are 1/4" @ 100 yd guns. I've been impressed with a couple of CZ .22's. So,e of the older Kimber (of Oregon) 22's are drop dead gorgeous, as well as fine shooters. A particular one I saw some 25 years ago was a full length manlicher stocked "Super" Grade, that I lusted after but just couldn't scrape up the $2500 at the time.

I had a Weatherby MK XXII auto years ago. Very accurate and reliable. I had a Weatheby 4X scope on it. Wish I still had it. They haven't made them for a couple or three decades. My only complaint is that they had a cheap magazine release, just a thin, stamped one.
My next will be a CZ M-452 with American style stock. I think it's just a little handier than the Browning-supplied Winchester M-52 sporter repros and cheaper.
I changed the Butaprene grips on my Ruger stainless MK II pistol for Ruger checkered walnut ones. Does that make it a "high grade" .22?
Gun writer Don Zutz was better known for his books like, The Double Shotgun. But he had an Anschutz M-54 .22 that he llked a lot. He spoke very highly of it in letters. When a man you know tells you in a private letter that he really likes a gun, I give that more weight than when he speaks well of it in an article. He also wrote nice things about it, and Don was more honest than some gun writers who suck up to manufacturers more than they really have to. But writers do have to avoid upsetting editors and ad managers. That doesn't apply in a letter to a pal. If the scribe praises a gun there, you know he truly admires it.

I really appreciate a good .22 rifle. My CZ with the European style stock is a real shooter, and the Kimber "Hunter" is my most accurate .22 rifle. Also nice it reminds me of a mini pre-64 Winchester. Pictured is a Weatherby XXll that I recently sold. Unfired before I got it, it was accurate and pretty.

I traded for 2 new Weatherby MK II'S years ago. Italian made. Only shot one of them. Very accurate.
Had a Browning M52 nib and never shot it.
Gad an Anschutz and liked it.
If I bought one today it would be the Cz452.
When I lived and breathed shotguns a writer and I used to correspond. It started with me telling him how to clean his bbls after a umpteen thousand round dove hunt in South America. Steel wool bore cleaner and a battery powered drill with the cleaning rod.
When I asked which shotgun he liked best he said autos when you shoot lots of rounds. But they all work if you do your part.

I shoot a Medalist in competition and it is unbelievable. The 3rd one I have owned. I would bet that 95% of the shooters out there shoot Ruger Mark 1, 11 & 111's. These have to be the best out of the box guns made as far as accuracy and dependability! The rest are S&W good ol 41's with a couple High Standards, Walthers, etc. I love all of these as well.

I have several Winchester 52's, including a 1923 vintage pre-A and two true Bull guns. All of them have appropriate optics for the period.
I also have one of the first runs of the Ruger MKII Government Target. I upgraded the internals and the grips. It is crazy accurate.
A while back I had a Winchester 1885 with a Pope 22 barrel, but I traded for bigger better things.
I have owned several Anschutz 54's and a few Remington 37's and 40X's that were great shooters.

Most folks don't consider High Standards to be "high grade" guns, but this 1940's GE Deluxe will hold it's own with my Colt Officers Model Target,Woodsman Match Target and Smith Model 41.

Back in early 70s I bought the exact gun new. At the time I was
into high end Target pistols. I had Walthers, Hi-Standards, Colts,
S&Ws and several other foreign makes. The Browning had a
unbelievable trigger right out of the box. Then I got into a M70
Win phase and let them all go. If I could get one back out of
all that I had, it would be the Medalist.

I've got an early Kimber M-82, and a Volquartsen semi auto that I use for our little gophers...Both are quite accurate.
Have a nice Marlin 39M Mountie and a Winchester 61 pump as well. REAL walnut and steel guns not like the plastic stocked stuff of today.
Have several nice Model 41's/46 as well as a trio of high % High Standard target autos.
I've always felt that one needed at least a couple of hi end .22's as they are so much fun too shoot and nearly impossible to wear out.

Here's the one I currently shoot in competition. One of the very earliest models with the cut-out in the rear sight (compare the two)... early 60's. I have over 100K rounds thru this and it shoots like the day I got it! There are a lot more 10's and X's left in it!
Some nice stuff here boys... keep 'em coming!

Mine qualifies as a C&R as it was made in 1964 (Serial ends in "T4")
Don't lose that screwdriver.... An original replacement will run you around $100.00...........................

Beer happens to be another of my hobbies and I visited a few breweries but like the provenience of my guns the beer I favour is from Germany .
I want to give you a little story about Mannlicher stocked Anschutz 1423s. My youngest son is mostly into ARs and SBRs but earlier this year when we went shooting together and I asked which guns we should bring along, he asked for one of my 1423s with a 2 1/4x21 Hensoldt scope on it since he felt his rifle skills were lacking. The gun was shot from a simple sandbag rest. With just a little coaching he got slightly sub 1" five shot groups at 100 yards with inexpensive GECO Rifle ammo and I think a higher magnification and better rest would have shrunken the groups.
I think it is easy to understand why it is my favourite .22 l.r. rifle.

I used to have a Ruger 77/22 that I thought was the best looking rifle of any kind I'd ever seen. It was certainly the best looking one I've ever owned. Growing up in "shotgun only" country the only rifle I ever "needed" was a 22. A lot of people say the Ruger won't shoot, but the one I had would, at least by my standards. It was made in the first year of production, and had a "Made in Japan" Simmons 3x7 scope.
I hated to sell it, but when I was out of work, I needed the money more than a gun I couldn't use anyway. I thought I had deleted the pictures, but found a couple. They're not real good, but they're all I've got.
These days, I suppose the closest thing I've got to a "high end" 22 is this one, a four screw K-22.

I need to redo these pictures, at least the left side one. That flat looking spot on the muzzle is a trick of the light.

Please define "high grade". Not sure that it really applies to my .22 rifles, such as:
Savage Anschutz Model 164 sporter.
Marlin Model 39A.
Winchester Model 62A.
Winchester Model 69A.
Winchester Model 1885, Winder Musket, .22 short.
Colt Lightning Model.
Any of the above will easily take any small game critter as far away as I can identify the target. Not to mention the other .22's:
S&W Model 18.
S&W Model 34 Kit Gun (constant companion on hunting, camping, and fishing trips for the past 30 years or so).
Colt Service Model Ace (about 1970, .22LR version of the Gold Cup line).
Everyone needs a good .22, rifle and/or pistol. More than one makes life more interesting.

I would define high grade as paying a lot of money for a little extra performance and better finish.

None of my rifles rank as high in the "high grade" category, as say a Cooper, they are more in the budget starter grade, of the "high grade" category.

Went to the gundealer for 3000 rounds of ammo.
And then there is a Korth 6" .22 l.r. in one of the showcases.
What a finish and a lockwork!! Ca. 35 years or older. Holy cow!
The pricetag is over $1500.--. But compared to a todays .22
sport-pistol, it is worth every cent..... but I don't have the money
ready. I pass.

Sako's are very high quality precision tools. I have a very accurate Sako Vixen in .222 Remington that I love!

Prices in Europe, especially Germany, are steadily climbing with most sales of Korths being international. Don't wait too long, a post 1969 .22 l.r. Korth has a double action pull that is much better and more consistant than even my trusty old S&W K-22 - and I rate it above my 1961 vintage Colt OMM.

Winchester model 52B made in 1946
Canadian model 12/15 date of birth unknown
British Model 12 date of birth unknown
Remington 40x single shot Rangemaster in 7.62 Nato.
The two in the middle are what would be called club rifles or range rifles, no matter as all of them are chambered in 22RF. Frank

A decade ago I was looking for a high grade .22 and was just about set to buy a Kimber Super America - very nice rifle!. Then one of my friends told me about a CZ 453 American that has a standard and single set trigger - standard for 1/3 of the cost of the Kimber. The wood is a beautiful Turkish Walnut, the rifle has ALL metal parts and NO plastic, bluing is the deep Browning type, and the fully adjustable triggers are a dream! The rifle will shoot one hole groups at 75 - 100 feet all day long with almost any ammo and I will stack it's accuracy up with ANY .22 rifle including Anshutz. While there are higher grade woods on other brands, I don't believe they have anything at all over the CZ when it comes to accuracy.
Unfortunately, that model has been discontinued (probably because it was not cost efficient to produce) and they have replaced it with the 455. While the 455 is a descent rifle, it does NOT have the single set trigger, has some plastic now and they have cheapened it to some extent. Still a great buy in a real accurate .22 but not in the same ball park as the 453 IMHO.
I bought a Leupold VX-ll 3-9 x 33 parallax adjustable Rimfire Scope and mounted it with the Buris Signature adjustable scope rings and it is one hell of a package! Including the scope I think it came in under $850

How was your day today...??
I am so excited, I just picked up a Model 53 today! A 6" with the inserts and the extra cylinder. The other day I was in Cabelas because I heard they just got in a butt load of ammo (including .22`s!). I finally got around to getting into the store, like 3 days later and they still had a bunch! There, on the shelves, amongst the 22`s (with no limit!), was a new box of the PPU .22 Jet! It was like 19 bucks, so I jumped on it. Then today I decided to drop by my favorite local GS. There in the case, I see a suspicious looking K frame. I ask the guy behind the counter, is that a 53? He says, "Yeah, I think" (I don't think he really knew). He pulls it out for me to look at. I notice the inserts and then I see a little red velvet bag. Sure enough... it's the extra cylinder! They were in a 2 piece, but not correct, blue box, 6". All of a sudden..., I heard a choir, the clouds opened up and a ray of sunshine, spotlights the revolver... I had to pick it up! After all... it was a sign from heaven!
I knew I had to do some quick thinking, as the owner started heading my direction. I look right behind the counter... and in the gun rack, up high again, like towards heaven..., is a really nice .22 rifle that had my name all over it (another future teaser)! So the negotiations start for both of them! 15 minutes later I'm headed home for some cash. Gawd, I love nice .22`s!
So, all in all... a pretty great day... 2 new guns... woo whooo!!
I hope to avoid any lock-up problems when I shoot it, so I will be doing some searches to avoid any upcoming problems in the near future with MY NEW JET ! ! Now I just need to find the proper box. I wanted an 8 3/8ths that I'll just have to make do for now.

Well, I guess I'm just going to have to post up some more.
Look real close, this is no Ruger or "Normal" AMT. This was their Bulls Eye Target Model, that as far as I can tell, was only manufactured for one year. Remember the good old days of "Shotgun News" and a few other of the gun rags? I was flipping thru one a bunch a years ago and this one caught my eye in an ad. It reminded me of my beloved Medalist with the vented rib, bull barrel, etc., so I ordered it! I have never seen another come up for sale or seen another anywhere. I've had plenty of offers on this one!
I know all of the complaints about AMT. etc., but this one has none of the issues what so ever! I have shot it in competition and it's a one-hole'er!
I immediately went to Harrett (practically a neighbor) and had these custom grips fitted for it, put the original wooden ones away and never looked back.
Now I know the fine people of the S&W Forum know everything there is to know about anything and I would really appreciate any extra info anyone has on this fine firearm.
Thanx Ladies & Germs,
Robert
