Default Favorite non-S&W every day carry (EDC) guns

There is a thread going about folks favorite S&W EDC guns. It was drifting so thought I start one here on non-S&W EDC guns.

Mine would be Beretta's Model 92.

Got my first Compact, an F, in about 1988.... pre 3rd Gen Smiths.... had a 469 but didn't really like the grip.

It was love at first sight... IMO the 13rd Compact (mine had wood grips) was way cooler than the Beretta's carried by Bruce Willis and Mel Gibson with it's 3/4" Shorter slide and flush cut barrel. As a guy in his early 30s "cool" was a really important range requirement!!!!!

I still like the Compacts today with radius-ed backstrap, add the new Mec-Gar flush fit 15 round magazines and thin G-10 grips. While not a true compact IMO; it's really a small duty size gun like the Sig 228/229. Farrar made a mag collar that allows the use of 15-18 round back up mags.

Another favorite is the 92 Type-M a single stack (8+1) Compact.......about the size and feel of a model 39. More than enough Gun for my Burb of the Burgh.

Finally, the 92 Centurion;it has a full size frame mated to the 4.25" Compact's barrel and slide. What IMHO the M-9 should have been in the first place. Now with Flush fit Mec-gar and factory 17 and 18 rd magazines and thin G-10 Grips.

These guns are all super reliable and time tested.... with subtle improvements to the basic design over the last 35 years. Also the Beretta pairs well with the Beretta CX-4 PCC that uses 92 magazines..... factory and Mec-Gar from 15 to 30 rounds....... for home defense, SHTF or the next Zombie apocalypse.

While the Beretta 92 have been bad mouthed for years folks like Bill Wilson, Earnest Langdon and Ken Hackathorn really like them...... in fact Wilson Combat and LLT (Langdon) each have a whole line of customized Beretta 92s.

Well. To me IWBs are uncomfortable. OWBs don't conceal that well unless you're wearing a snowmobile suit. I can shove this Sig P938 9 mile-oh-meter in my pocket.

If you mean full size service pistols, the Beretta M-92FS and the CZ-75B and the S&W M-66-3 with four-inch barrel have served here. A Browning Hi-Power 9mm is slim for its size and can also be be carried in the right holster.

But a more compact gun is better in the main, so I have a Ruger SP-101 with a barrel a trifle over three inches, in .357. However, the S&W M-60-4 is more often carried, unless I feel a need for Magnum power.

Long ago, the Beretta M-34 .380 and the Colt Police Positive Special .38 with 4 inch bbl. served.

Any size any gun.

Everyone on this Forum is here because they like some or all of the Smith &Wesson lineup past or present. I like S&W revolvers over all other Brands and the 3rd Gen and Performance Center Autos....

But there are other makes and models we also develop a special fondness for ........... like you, I like the Browning HP and I have a couple but I don't carry cocked and locked anymore. My long ago "suit gun" before my first 3913 was a Walther PPK

My fondness for the Beretta 92 has led to an accumulation over the years..........that still continues with a recent purchase of a Wilson Combat Centurion.........

My non-S&W carry guns are a Sig P365 and a Seecamp .32. I carry the Sig under LEOSA and the Seecamp under my CHL. The Sig is very easy to qualify with, but without sights the Seecamp would be difficult at 25 yards prone.

My favorite non-S&W EDC is one of my Sig P239’s in either a Milt Sparks VMII or a Galco Royal Guard.

I am most always armed. My almost constant companion is a Springfield Micro 1911 in 45acp. I found this gun right after I retired in 2006 and it fits my hand perfectly and points like it is an extension of my hand. 21 rds total with 2 extra Wilson 7rd Officers mags.
My other most common carry is a very early (1997) Kahr Arms K40. Bought it as an off duty weapon and it also fits my hand like a glove and points instinctively. Has a very smooth trigger pull and shoots like a full sized gun.
Also occasionally carry a S&W Shield 45 or 9.
If going somewhere that requires very discrete carry, I have a Kahr Arms CM9 or P380. Either can easily be concealed IWB or in a pocket holster.

Well, I was going to post a reply, but realized they're all S&W's. My truck gun is a Pitbull .45 though, so that's kind of an EDC. 😊

As I'm many miles out of the city area my EDC is a Ruger LCR .38

Its light & compact and just disappears in my pocket with a Desantis pocket holster. Its so easy to just grab holstered gun and stick it in your pocket as you go out the door.

As much as I love my full-size Beretta 92FS, it is a bit large for EDC. I do plan on getting some carry gear for it, eventually. I would like a 92 Compact, either the new 92X Compact or, if I win the lottery, the LTT 92 Compact.

However, until then, I'm very happy with my Beretta PX4 Compact. So much, in fact, that I would like to add another one, especially the Compact Carry. It's probably going to be a while until I get one, though.

Anyways...here's my PX4...

Oh, my EDC holster is a black horsehide Kramer IWB #3 and my carry ammo is 147gr HST.

Being built on the, er, husky side (how's that for a euphemism?) I can conceal nearly anything. On Sundays and other times I keep a little lower profile I carry a Sig P365 IWB.

In my everyday blue jeans attire I frequently carry a tricked out BHP. My latest one has the new proprietary coating from BHSS in black, their new precision barrel, spring loaded recoil rod guide, an SFS, and BHSS Heritage grips.

Sometimes I carry a Commander sized BHP custom made by the late Dallas gunsmith Jim Corder. Obviously I have a thing for the Hi-Power.

Carrying 10+ years and only four EDC’s in that span. Two primary and two more as “gun is forced to be left in the car because of the destination that day”, usually a sporting event, concert or most often, any school function with the kids.

Of these four, only one has been S&W.

First EDC is a circa-2008 MML-prefix Glock 29, 10mm. Updated with careful Dremel work to remove offensive plastic, Pearce +0 grip extensions on magazines, Meprolight sights and ISMI recoil spring. This was my first primary and carried it IWB for years.

Walther PPQm2 in 9mm took over maybe 3-4 years ago. Night sights have been the only upgrade. My primary EDC now and will be for a long, long time.

My first “secondary” carry gun for many years was a circa-1994 Ruger P-95DC in 9mm. Bicycle tire inner tube was the only upgrade and this was a must as the original grip may just as well have been carved from a bar of soap. That pistol was replaced a couple year back by a 2nd Gen S&W 469.

I have been passionate about handguns since I was a teenager and I simply fall in love with the ones I like most. This is my way of saying that I wouldn’t want to carry a gun that I love, as it gets banged around and neglected, covered in sweat and lint and it lives a life that I wouldn’t want to put a loved gun through. I pretty much loathe tupperware guns but they are fantastic tools for daily carry, no doubt.

I've accumulated 5 over the years two FS with, strangely enough, round trigger guards, two Bright blue S's with walnut grips and a D model DOA...........and a bunch of mags...... if not for the 3913s smaller size one would be my EDC in my Burb of the Burgh.

Got the first one in 1993 in anticipation of the 94 AWB as "insurance" ..... at a Police Supply House here in the Burg...... an overrun on a Police Dept order .... the M's were for Detectives and Lt's and above.

My non-S&W carry gun is a Walther PPS40. I carry it in a Falco convertible IWB/OWB holster on those rare occasions I wear a suit or sports jacket.

I carry a Walther PPS, if I don't have my Shield. I have both 9mm and 40. I'm very fond of both.

First gen Ruger LC9 - IWB in a Tagua hybrid, in an inside pocket of my vest, or in a Galco pocket holster tucked in my front pants pocket.

I like several J Frames, especially the 432PD (32 H&R Mag) airweight. But I most frequently carry the Ruger LCP as it is small enough to go any where. The Sig 365 I need an OWB and don't carry as often but really like to shoot. There are others that get in use from time to time, including some dress occasions where I slip this in my pocket.

Usually when I'm going somewhere where I'm not supposed to carry.

Almost every day of my adult life, since 1980, there has been a Smith & Wesson J-frame with me. Oftentimes as a backup and in recent years as a primary

Usually, my larger sidearm was determined by the organization I was with at the time

When the choice of sidearm is mine, I will usually carry a SIG P220. Initially chambered in 45 ACP, but for the past 7 or 8 years, it has been chambered in 10MM Auto

Sig 365 for me. I have a shield but it's in my safe. A good pistol.

I've got two J-frames and they're painful to shoot. And impossible (for me) to get a follow up round. I've got huge rubber grips on my 442, which kinda negates it as a pocket carry weapon.

I also carry a .32 PPK and a .380 PPK. Sometimes, but not usually.

P-365 in an IWB holster. The holster really only covers the trigger guard and muzzle. A bit minimalist but I don’t like IWB any other way.

Back in the latter part of the 80s ...... I transitioned from Cocked and locked Colts to a Sig 220 to meet my winter .45 needs..... mine says "W. Germany" and will shoot cloverleafs at 50ft (not me so much anymore ) In the early 90s I got a Compact Sig 245 to replace my 4516 which was a brick to carry. Finally picked up a Sig "Earnest Langdon" all steel 220 which is still nib. Still like my old Sigs..... but over the years I seem to have gravitated to hi-cap 9s vs single stack .45s. A PC Shorty-9 vs. Sig 245's 6+1.

A 442 is in my pocket around the house, but for CCW, a Sig 365 is my choice. It's been my 95% carry gun since I picked one up a few years back.
