What gun(s) made "Remington" synonymous with "firearms"
I can think of plenty of preWWII guns associated with S&W, Colt, Winchester, Savage and Marlin.
The Wingmaster was a late comer and the 31 and 32 Remington's were drops on the bucket. Which early guns made Remington famous?

The Remington Rolling Blocks put Remington on the map.
Remington made muzzleloaders going back to 1816, but the Rolling Block was the cartridge firearm that really made them stand out.

The Civil War was a definite boost for Remington.
Don't forget the Remington Handguns both percussion and centerfire.

Remington made revolvers (both C&B and cartridge) from the Civil War onwards, some of which are highly collectible, most notably the Model 1890. Many believe the Remington Model 1858 C&B revolver was superior to the Colt. The Remington Rolling Block rifle was adopted by the militaries of numerous countries, including the U.S., during the later 19th century. The aforementioned Model 8 (and later, the Model 81) semiautomatic rifles were very popular and widely used from the early 20th century until the 1950s, along with several similar pump action rifles in an array of centerfire rifle calibers. Then there is the Remington Model 11 shotgun, virtually identical to the Browning A-5. During WWI, Remington made huge numbers of the U.S. Model 1917 Enfield military rifle. There is no shortage of very important guns made by Remington long before the Models 700, 870, and 1100.

Actually, during WWII when Belgium was occupied, Remington was manufacturing Browning A-5s for the US market. I am a little prejudiced about the Remington Model 12 as I own one, but I consider it as one of the finest .22 pump guns ever made, right up there with the Winchester Model 61, and a whole lot cheaper on the used gun market.

For me it is the rolling blocks, the 1875 single action and the Model 11.

The Split Breech, aka Rolling Block, is the REAL 'Gun that Won The West'. At one point, it was as militarily prevalent as the AK or FAL. Saw military service from the closing days of the Civil War all the way up to the dawn of the smokeless powder era, with some in service in WW1; there are Rolling Blocks in 7x57 Mauser and .30-06.
The Rolling Block is the gun that made Remington a first-line armsmaker.

While the "Split Breech" is essentially the first version of the rolling block action, that particular design was not used for long after the Civil War ended. They were intended mainly for use with rimfire cartridges. It evolved into a solid breech mechanism which was somewhat stronger, for use with centerfire cartridges, and those are what most collectors consider to be the "Rolling Block." And indeed some were manufactured into the 20th Century and for smokeless powder cartridges. Rolling block .22 "Boy's Rifles" were fairly popular until the 1920s, mostly made by Stevens. One of the more unusual examples of the Rolling Block are the so-called "Papal" Remingtons used for awhile by the Swiss Guards in the Vatican. These were not made by Remington, but rather by English and Belgian makers, and were chambered for a cartridge very similar to the American .50/70. The Remington Rolling Block rifles were widely copied by European manufacturers, often without any manufacturing rights purchased from Remington.

If memory serves, their first big commercial orders were for M-1841 rifles.
I presume these saw Mexican War service, and they made more for Zouve troops in the Civil War. Had these not been a success, I doubt they'd have made the Rolling Block and the Civil War revolvers.
No one mentioed the double - barreled derringers, one of Remigton's most famous pistols.
