Default Swapping cylinders...22mag vs 22lr

Did not want to hijack 1891SingleShot's thread. My knowledge of firearms is limited at best so don't flame the student.

I have a Heritage 22LR revolver. It also came with a cylinder for 22mag.I've had numerous FTF with 22LR but the 22mag cylinder (and ammo) works flawlessly.I'm pretty sure I was using CCI in 22LR so I didn't suspect the ammo was at fault.

In the other thread the OP wants to find a 22LR cylinder for his model 48.Is it possible that he could have the same issues as I had with the Heritage?

I'm thinking that the "hit" on a 22LR's primer might have to be heavier than on a 22mag.I know even less about ammo so I'm taking a wild guess here.Wouldn't the internals of the firearm have as much to do with both type ammo's working?

Am I making sense?

I saw nothing in that post to indicate he was using LR in a Magnum cylinder. He said, quite clearly, that the gun has two cylinders.

With a well-made gun, there should be no problem. I put a LR cylinder in my Single Six, and it goes POW POW POW. I switch over to the magnum cylinder, and again it goes POW POW POW.

While I'm sure others will disagree, I believe the problem lies in the first few words of your second paragraph.

"I have a Heritage..."

I would try several different .22 LR brands, and if the problem persists with all of them a call to their customer service department may get you a new cylinder. They will ask you if you tried different ammo so you can get that answer out of the way beforehand. Please let us know what happens.

The .22LR and .22 Magnum are NOT interchangeable. IF you've loaded .22LR into a Magnum chamber then consider yourself a statistic....they are NOT the same!
I am well aware of that and am not THAT stupid.I didn't want to get too wordy in my post...

My uneducated thought process was that changing out cylinders doesn't change the mechanics of the gun itself.I realize that not all 22LR ammo is of the same quality and I also believe that what works in one gun doesn't necessarily always work 100% in the same model that someone else owns.

Do 22mag and 22LR ammo use the same primer? Could it possibly take less force to ignite the primer in 22mag than it does in 22LR? I believe I've read where people have messed with the trigger pull and it resulted in less than 100% reliability in the ammo firing.I have also read where 22 revolvers typically have a heavier trigger pull due to the ammo.

I was thinking that a gun made to shoot 22mag might not be setup the same internally as a gun made to shoot 22LR.

I know my thoughts are somewhat scattered but if someone takes the time to think about what I'm saying they might understand where I'm going with this.

Different brands of .22 LR (and Magnum) will require different levels of force for consistent primer ignition, but if your revolver should fire one 100% it should do the same with both. If it fires less than perfectly with .22 LR a trip back to the factory would be in order (for the gun, not you ).

Thank you...I haven't tried any other 22LR ammo in it.I've been too occupied scoffing up S&W's.

Does the back of the .22 LR cylinder show any marks that might indicate that the firing pin is hitting the surface of the cylinder rather than the cartridge rim? That cylinder may not have been timed correctly at the factory.

A whole lot of possibilities. Also different magnum rounds...like the Jet.

But the exact place the firing pin hits the rim is probably where the OPs problem will be found. To really diagnose the problem, you'll need some fired brass of both cartridges. The Jet uses 2 firing pins to make sure the pin hits the right place. If you take a round of the magnum ammo and a round of the LR and put them base to base you'll see the difference in diameter. If the pin hitting the LR rim is perfectly placed, it might not be so well placed for the magnum. And vice versa.

So if you have a few fired cases, look at them to see where the piin has been hitting. Not certain, but it could provide you with your answer. Then the solution might be the same, sell the revolver.

It is possible the rims on the 22 LR ammo your using is thinner or harder. I'd try a different brand. The hammer fall will be the same speed for both.

Try some different 22 LR ammo and get back to us. Oh, is the 22 LR cylinder counter sunk or do the rounds sit on top of the cylinder? If it is counter sunk it may be too deep..

Perhaps a Heritage owner can answer the last one.

There is most likely a mechanical issue and not an ammo issue that leads to misfires in the .22 .r.

Since the .22 WMR work flawlessly the firing pin protrusion should be good. I suspect that the .22 l.r. cylinder is too far forward and would recommend that you check the gap of both cylinders with a round in it in firing position and compare your readings. The spent cases should also have shallower imprints if tis is indeed the cause.

Considering that it has been 3yrs since I shot the Heritage I still had the empty brass in the garage. The 22mag was CCI and the 22LR was Winchester super X.

The firing pin indent on the casings were typically on the very edge of the brass. Some hits were lighter than others and it didn't matter which ammo it was or if it was a FTF. Everything was consistent across the board so It must have been the Winchester ammo.

I have had 2 48s with fitted cylinders. They are not drop in. I still have a photo of one. I have never seen a 17 with a 22 mag cylinder.

This might be the answer:

Three years ago it was had to find .22 LR cartridges on the shelf and those that I found more often than not were substandard. What previously had been my favorite were so bad that I could no longer do well in matches with them. All the .22 LR manufacturers were working around the clock and no doubt with new hires. Try again with a lot of .22 LR cartridges that performs well in your other .22s.

Colt, I see many hundreds to multiple thousands of .22s shot each week. One thing I have noticed in the last few years of the great ammo shortage. Bulk pack .22 by all manufacturers has the most failures to fire . CCI LRs are the best at going bang consistently. Mini Mags are the best of those. In the last 3 years I have not seen one .22 magnum fail to fire, in any gun. Just my own personal observation. This includes many thousands in total for the last 3 years. Try some different ammo and don't throw the baby out with the bath water. AND you are not NEAR as ignorant as some who post. Remember..Everybody is ignorant..just about different things...Will Rogers

I like!!!

The Heritage is one odd puppy...My first revolver.Pull out a rod in front of the trigger guard and the cylinder falls out the right side.I can't say I like the way it loads from the right or that you can only eject one empty at a time.Best part about it is it turned me on to S&W's and I haven't looked back since.

I figure I'll just leave the 22mag cylinder in it and shoot it with my model 48.I've got a few other 22 revolvers and rifles that I've had no ammo issues with so why torture myself.
