"Rare" is an Over-used Term, But...
I bought this very early production SP101 last week for the pauper's sum of $300 (with a nice zip case and gun lock, even!).
For those of you who know, (I did not, at first) the models that were produced with green xenoy grip inserts are not common. I've read on the Ruger site "they are known in the ser. no. range from 570-00726 to 570-06817 with the comment that 'not over 10,000 produced. Very Scarce.'"
I know it's no vintage S&W. But, I'm a Ruger fan. So, I was pretty happy to find this.

I'm happy to have come across it and it's now right at home with its big brother of similar vintage.

Don't let that number trip you up, my friend. That's an estimation -and, not mine. I was simply including the entire quote.
Maybe 10,000 (27 years ago) out of a current production total of more than 600,000...
Yes, sir. I would call that scarce.
More accurately, the listed known range is from 570-00726 to 570-06817, or 6,091 examples that possibly have the green xenoy grip inserts.
That which amounts to less than 1% is most certainly scarce to any objective standard that I've ever heard of.

I just got offered JOE Cocker's 10-22.
Didn't know Joe Cocker had a 10-22?
Me neither.
I also have to go with total number built to evaluate 'rare', not a percentage.

If he squirmed around and contorted his face half as bad when he was shooting as when he was singing , I'm betting he couldn't hit the side of a barn, from the inside.

The grips don't do anything for me, but I think if it is an early SP, it has a smaller cylinder than the newer ones. Early small SP's are desirable
