off-topic perhaps but a heads-up on a rifle discontinuance
If any of you are yearning for a Ruger 77/22, you better move fast. Due to many buyers expressing a preference for their lower-cost American series, Ruger has discontinued the 77/22. I had a model 7002 on order from my Ruger media contact but learned this morning that the rifle and its rotary magazines have been discontinued. I was able to find a new one on GunBroker and there were five dealers selling them but every local shop with which I spoke can no longer obtain that model.
It's a shame that classic rifles like the 77/22 are becoming so hard to find. Most out there have stamped metal trigger guards, magazines that extend from the stock, matte finishes or synthetic stocks - or all of the above. The 77/22 was one of the very last available.

It's a "revolver" because of the magazine?
I never thought of it that way, but I guess it is.

Sorry to hear that. Glad I have kept my 22 LR,22Hornet,and my 22 Magnum, all in stainless laminated. They are excellent rifles. Prices were high before this, but they are high quality. Watch prices climb now.

I have two Remington 541-Ts - one sporter and one heavy barrel. Like the 541-S, they're pretty salty when you find a nice one today.
The sporter has wood made for me by Remington's Custom Shop with 30 coats of hand-rubbed oil finish when I bought it about 30 years ago. Like all those rifles, it has a match-grade barrel and is very accurate. Guns like that aren't available today unless you want to spend four figures or close to it.

I think the 77/22 has been one of the nicest .22 rifles made. I picked this one out from many quite a few years ago as having the sweetest trigger pull. This is a particularly rare variation, having the composite stock of the stainless version, but the normal blued finish, which I prefer for field use. I hated the 1" cheesy dangling sling swivels, so I installed QD studs.
It's one of my more accurate .22 rifles. Sorry to see it go; it will probably become a collector's item. By the way, 10/22 mags will fit, so magazines will be available for a long time.

Sorry to hear that is been taken out of the line up. I bought mine as soon as they came out way back when. Put a good Leupold 4x on it. I have described this little beauty as "it thinks its a target rifle" as it shoots that well.

I think they are also discontinuing the 77/357 and 77/44...............My 77/357 is a favorite utility gun at the cabin........ 5rounds of .357 and same ammo as my Smiths.....................just got 3 extra magazines......
Doesn't the 77/22 use the same mags as the 10/22?????
I recently picked up a Ruger American carbine in .22magnum...... really nice shooter for $300. 9 round rotary magazine......really light/maybe too light...... and the butt is slippery on the shoulder....... but still minute of fist/ under the crosshairs at 100yd with a little Leuplod 1-4x20 scope

The 77 magazine has a flat bottom, but either mag will work in either gun

I bought a m77 270 when they were first out, it's a tack driver.
I bought a 10/22 when first out, before it was cool. It became my
go to 22 for hunting. I got a 77/22 when first out, haven't used
the 10/22 for hunting since. It will shoot with Rem 541s- CZs and
SAKO Finnfire, for a lot less money. I was always hoping they
would bring it out in Target version, ala 52 Win. All in all a very
fine 22 rifle. The fit and finish on mine is really well done. Also
have 77/ Hornet. I have never been let down by a Ruger product.

I grew up on the 10-22s and .44 Mag carbines and decided to buy a blue 77-22 in .22lr with walnut stock several years ago for fun, mounted a 4x Weaver scope, Great gun !

I have a 1985 vintage 77/22 that I picked up used at a gun show in the early 90s. IIRC, I believe I paid about $200 for it.
Wonderful rifle. Quite possibly the most accurate .22 I own.
But these days many shooters are more interested in stainless and plastic instead of blue steel and walnut. Especially when the newer stuff is cheaper.
The loss of this fine rifle is a sad day for an old traditionalist like me.

The 77/xx rimfires are very nicely made, solid rifles. The problem is indifferent and inconsistent accuracy, which did not justify the cost. Some of these guns are tack drivers, and if you have one, you have a real winner and something to be proud of. Some are, unfortunately, disappointing. For the money being charged, these guns should be consistently shooting with near Anschutz accuracy.
I wound up going with the cheaper and, frankly, uglier Savage 93R17 and Mark II, simply because they shoot all out of proportion for their price, consistently. The decision did not rest with the stock, sheetmetal, nor looks. It rested with the barrel.
Edit: And before anyone thinks I'm anti-Ruger...

While I don't own one of these rifles, this is what I've heard repeatedly, which suggests its a true statement. I've also heard disparaging things about their triggers. When CZs are as nicely built, $200 cheaper, and excellent in the accuracy and trigger department, it's not surprising that the Rugers are not selling well.
