Default Christy Modified .22LR 1884 Colt SAA

Why do I buy these things?

I didn't like the grips on it, so I put the right grips on it.

The barrel is marked Christy (when I took off the ejector housing).

Looks like it doesn't have the full Christy firing pin conversion sadly.

It's heavy as heck, the microsights are super nice, and I can't wait to find out what those extra notches on the front sight are ranged for.

Overall I couldn't be much happier with the stupid thing.

Can anyone tell me anything more about it? Do you think Christy did all the work, or did some good gunsmith just happen to buy a Christy Cylinder/Barrel and Microsights?

Oh, and one other thing. The grips that were on it where not numbered to the gun, but they did have some things scratched into one side.

Anyone recognize anything here?

I just rebuilt one for a friend that had a Christy's barrel and cylinder in it converted to .38 Special. It was an 1876 pistol. I had to re-time it, strip it and rust blue it. It had a lot of pits, but came out nice and functional, although I wouldn't shoot it. Nice old gun.

Shot it, boy is it fun, with all that weight it's just a real pleasure.

Looks like it's a full Christy workup on a frame from 1894. Guessing sometime right around 1950 +/- a couple years.

OK, gots to admit I never heard of the Christy conversions. Will research same pronto. So let me get this straight. This is a Colt SAA with an 1884 frame, converted to .22 rimfire. When the conversion was done that would be for the .22 long as the long rifle round didn’t come out for a few years (1888? or so). Not sure of the accuracy as the long rifle uses a 40 grain bullet and the long the 29 grain projectile. Rifling twist differences? Dunno.

That looks like a massive firing pin for the little rim-fire round. And I bet that is a heavy handgun!

Enjoy,

Rich

My edit: The frame is from 1884 but the conversion was done at a later date. Got it now!!
