Default Ole Hick

I know a guy who makes knives from old tool metal like files and crosscut saw and sawmill saw blades. I've bought several knives from him for my own use and for gifts for others and his prices are reasonable. He usually has a couple of tables at the gun show down in Conway, Arkansas, and since they were having a show this weekend we drove down to do some Christmas shopping and a side trip into the gun show.

I spotted a knife on his table that caught my eye. It was a short ole hickory style knife made from 01 tool steel with a handle made from what he called "unidentified stabilized cow pasture wood" with brass liners and pins. He said you never know what you will find when you cut open some wood you find laying around, and he got this from a piece of wood that was laying out in the edge of a pasture. It ended up going home with me.

You can check out his wares on his FB page; Caney Creek Knifeworks

Love it, one of a kind. Beautiful, functional and great steel, don't get any better. Will make you a great companion in the woods.

That is a really neat piece. I have several of the Old Hickory lineage and that one blows them all away. Did you get a matching sheath to go with it? That man clearly has vision and talent.

Great knife. I have built and refinished a lot of guitars in my day and that looks a lot like Spalted Maple.

I could be wrong.

Toad Suck is just across the Arkansas River from Conway. I can remember when you used to cross the river there on the Toad Suck Ferry . . . there is a bridge across the Arkansas River there now atop the Toad Suck Lock & Dam.

I look for any opportunity to work Toad Suck into a conversation.

Well then, Conway has "Toad Suck Square" which is the intersection of Front Street and Oak Street. There is also a "Toad Suck Store" in the old icehouse downtown. And of course, there is the annual Toad Suck Daze festival every May in Conway. It's a big event and folks from all of the state come and participate in the festivities.

My late brother-in-law liked an Old Hickery to fillet big Stripers, called his "Chewy" after the fishing guide who taught him a few tricks of the trade.

He'd have loved a fine knife like that, and he was one to have used it too.

The builds were all solid bodies. The resto/refins were both. All my stuff is in storage, I'll try to dig out some pics.

Neat knives. I wish he had a "real" website and not just a Facebuck page.

Sweet !
All the high tech plastics and laminates can't beat good old mother nature when it comes to beautiful woods . Nice score.

kwill1911,
If you are interested in something from the builder, just email him from his Facebook page. As an example, I saw this thread today at about 3:30pm and sent him an email. He got back to me quickly and at 7pm or so, I had bought one of his knives. He is very responsive and said he just got back from his last show of the year. Probably the same one the OP had been at. Prices seemed very reasonable.

Talk about fast service, this mini-nesmuk style knife showed up in today's mail. Really a nice little piece and makes me want to go skin something. He told me is going to start doing more on Facebook to show off his products. Thanks to the OP for starting this thread.

Ha, I'm pretty sure I have that same coffee mug somewhere.

Funny true story . . . I had a buddy who lives in the Dallas, Texas, area and he and his family came to visit one weekend. Just so happens that the Toad Suck Festival was going on that weekend so we went down Saturday evening to entertain the kids and feast on "something on a stick" from one of the many food truck vendors. The kids ended up going home each with a "Toad Suck Daze" T-shirt.

When they got back home the kids (5th and 6th graders) wore their new T-shirts to school. The school called their parents and asked them to bring them something else to wear because the Toad Suck shirts were inappropriate.

You be the judge . . . .
