Sounds a bit high even for a new item.
If you are able to shop used you can do much better
Make sure the safety is metal not plastic.

590's are good to go, what model was it?
Here is my parkerized, 8 shot in wood
One nice thing about 590's is that you can use a bayonet if you ever need too
Don't believe everything that you hear, M500's are good to too

According to their website, there are 6 model 590 and 10 590A1 variations. It's a good solid gun but $450 may be an OK price (for a plain 590) or a great one (590A1, ghost ring sights, extended magazine). Have a look and see if we need to make a run on the PX .

I had a model 500 and model 590. I sold them because of the position of the safety. I have owned and shot Remington shotguns and rifles all my life. I instinctively reach behind the trigger guard for the safety. Although the Mossbergs are good shotguns, I could not overcome, nor did I wish to, the safety location. I bought a Remington 1100 and model 870. I am happy.

I used Remington 870s all during my LE career, but for my own personal needs, I chose the Mossberg 590 Special Purpose. IMO, the forward release lever and safety are more easily accessable and user friendly on the Mossberg. Both are great shotguns. It all comes down to personal preference and what you can afford.

The 590 is a great shotgun. As stated, there are various levels of factory additions that can affect the price. For a basic model, $400 would be a better buy number.

As others have posted, there are different 590 configuations. On YouTube, Hickok 45 has tested the 590A1 military-style model and a 590 police turn-in. Worth a look, IMO.

I've carried my personal owned 590 for duty use for nearly 10 years. I had my barrel threaded so I could use choke tubes and with an X-tra full choke it doubles as my turkey slayer in the spring.
Parkerized finish with speedfeed stock, factory ghost rings and heat shield on a 20 inch barrel.

My first shotgun (at age 16) was a Mossberg. Although I have concerns about their current foreign made guns, I believe their 500 is about as good as they come. Mine have been used in rain, snow and sleet, as well as hot Summer temps. They have been abused without cleaning them for years. Never had a single malfunction. Your comment has me stumped...

I come from a family that lived with double barrels. The Mossberg safety is located in the "traditional" position, thus its use is second nature for me.
Remington made good guns years ago, but their current production (in the last 20 years) is **** in my opinion. Even the current cheap Mossbergs beat Rems. Also, Rems ammo is not salable IMHO.
Before i'd buy a Rem I think I would practice with the safety until i liked it...
