Exclamation New Savage AR To Compete With The M&P AR's?

SAVAGE might be rolling out a new AR-15 in January. This will give the M&P15 (and other makes of the AR-15) some competition. Very interesting!

Seeing rumblings that this rifle might be .308, not 5.56...

They seem to be very late to the Band Wagon, I wonder if they have a "Hook" to force us to take a look. One more run in the mill AR 10 or 15 is one more yawn!

What does that make now, about three dozen companies that make an AR?

Maybe they were waiting to see the election results. Sears may come out with one now.

On another forum, Mrgunsngear said "So.... I know all the details but am sworn to secrecy. But, what I can tell you is they have some very interesting offerings beyond a "AR-15 with a MLOK hand guard" coming. Details will be released a week or two before SHOT."

He can't give out any details due to non-disclosure agreement.

Also, why all the hate about a company releasing another AR? More competition is better for us, the consumer. Also harder to ban when it is the top selling rifle, and perhaps the most commonly used rifle.

This is a side charging AR, not everybody makes those and they have a growing following.

Did you notice it's a Side Charging rifle. There is your hook. If they do build it in a 30 caliber version it would be a rather nice tribute if they offered a version in 300 Savage, the predecessor to the 308.

Ballistically (and dimensionally, except for neck length), there is very little difference between the .300 Savage and the .308 Win, and as the .300 Savage cartridge is rapidly moving into semi-obsolete status, it's not likely that the new Savage AR in .300S would attract much of a following if for no other reason than limited ammunition availability. However, it certainly wouldn't be difficult or costly for Savage to offer it in .300 Savage to test the waters.

Looks like a folding side charge handle and a proprietary handguard design. Whatever it is it don't look like just another "me too" mil spec.

That is funny!!!

However a 250-3000 has some (very little) merit. 22-250? or one of the 35's (35 Remington or 358 Winchester)

Somebody is making an AR in 338 Lapua, maybe a 460 Weatherby upper?

The more I think about it the more I like the idea of a 358 Upper!

Guess we don't have to wait until SHOT...

4 models, two AR-15 and two AR-10 flavors... Only one AR-10 has the side charging handle.

No barrel length for the AR-15 variants mentioned. Is that because the de facto length is 16" these days? I like them using mid-length gas systems.

Cannot say I'm a fan of the 16" .308 AR-10s around these days. I suspect a lot of owners will find that "what?" will become their new catchphrase.

I love savage rifles, have 3 of their heavy barrel tactical guns, I don't see anything in these new guns that excite me, so I wish them well, but I will still be shooting my own current black auto rifles that I have way less money in,

I think Savage is going to find the market is saturated with AR15s. They really needed to do some innovation to stand out from the crowd, and from what I'm seeing they have not done anything really different.

If I was running their program, I'd be making a non-tactical version of their AR10 in .22-250 with a 20" or 22" barrel and a simple free float tube and a choice of fixed or telestock.

The above is basically what I'm talking about. It's my Remington R15 18" carbine in .223. No frills other than the camo dipping. It's pretty basic, and it's very accurate. This is my dedicated coyote hunting rifle. The only way it could be better would be to have it in a .22-250 version on a lightweight AR10 platform. Been hoping Remington would eventually make one. Savage should be since they are calling it a Modern SPORTING Rifle, but they've embraced the tactical bling and not what's necessary for a hunting rifle.

The real pity is Savage is has come out with some real turds lately. The 17 WSM bolt action still has not had the magazine problems fully corrected, and there is buyer resistance to the Euro look and the funky bolt handle knob. The A17 semi-auto 17 HMR requires special ammo to function under all weather conditions and still has magazine problems. And is still not made in a heavy barrel version. And it also has magazine problems. Their synthetic stock Mark II and 93R models have extremely poorly designed stocks for optics use and even most of their wood stocks have poor cheek welds. I was willing to work around these issues on my bolt action rimfire Savages and modify the stocks, because the guns are actually quite accurate. Savage should have concentrated on improving what they have instead of launching into new lines. Mossberg is eating Savage's lunch for bolt actions that use AR15 and .308 mags. Remington and Ruger are getting the bolt action .300 Blackout sales because Savage refuses to chamber that cartridge. (Savage bizarrely claims the cartridge is not accurate enough, but industry insiders have said it is because Savage found it would not reliable feed in their actions.)

That's my rant and I'm stickin' to it.

Thumbs up

That MSR15 PATROL sure looks nice! It kind of reminds me of the SAINT. With a price tag of $852 MSRP that will probably be $685-$725 in the real AR world. That's getting very close to Colt prices.
I have never heard of BLACKHAWK. Their parts almost look like MAGPUL. Opinions on BLACKHAWK VS MAGPUL?
Also, opinions on the MSR15? .223 Wylde target chamber, 5R 1:8 twist barrel, Melonite QPQ finish.........they didn't say anything about the BCG...?????
BTW, my son gave me some MAGPUL furniture for my AR-556 at Christmas. The MOE 400 stock and MOE SL hand guard (In black). He knows I will keep my Sport I all factory. I gave him a PSA Nickle Boron BCG for his AR-556.
BTW, thanks cyphertext.
