After reading these posts I'll have to add a CZ 75 compact to my wish list. Kept popping up in numerous posts. Have been looking at these for a long time, don't know why I haven't taken that final step of acquisition.
Would really like a P210 but cost prohibitive.

I second his second. The 915 is quite possibly the most underrated pistol ever made by Smith & Wesson. I bought mine new when they first came out to use as an off-duty gun. It's approaching the 90K round count, and I've never had a malfunction of any type, with I-dont-know-how-many different types of ammo. I have more than a few handguns, and I enjoy shooting them all. My 915 is one that I carry when my life depends on it. There is no higher recommendation than that.

The Browning HP-35 High Power and CZ-75.

Now, if you have to have a TDA pistol, the Sig P228 and the S&W 6906.

Academy has a Sig P226 Texas Edition with the Lone Star on the walnut grips that's calling my name. I think the P226 is one of the best 9s out there. The one I shot (not Texas Edition) has a very smooth light trigger with a short positive reset. It was a joy to shoot. It's $1000, though, so I have managed to resist so far.

I'm also longing for a CZ 2075 Rami. Never shot one, but I love CZ pattern pistols, and that one would make a good carry gun.

Default I dunno', Redcoat

The best 9mm's for me from the best manufacturer:

Beretta Px4 Compact matched with the
Beretta Cx4 Storm with Px4 magazine well adaptor

I could have listed the 92FS/Cx4 but prefer the Px4 due to low recoil. I believe these pistol/carbine combos maximize the potential of the 9mm and help develop practical shooting skills.

Although I admire the design & internals, I find Glocks uncomfortable to shoot. I regard "Glock knuckle" as a deal breaker rather that an idiosyncrasy; plus Glock does not manufacture a 9mm carbine to match the pistols.

Now a 9mm carbine that uses Colt magazines coupled with a Colt pistol utilizing same, tweaks my interest.

At the top or very near the top of my list would be CZ 9mm's. In my opinion you just can't get much better than a CZ. As soon as I can get hold of one I'll be getting myself the new CZ P-10C

I've got several 9mm's but my favorite is my Sig 225. Yeah, it's only a single stack, but it has a feel and balance that my Glock's lack. Fits my hand better than anything this side of a 1911.

I think the Beretta PX4 line of pistols is the most underrated pistol out there. From what I read, most people don't want to try one because no gov't agency has adopted it. Well, there are many factors beyond what is the best that go into agency acquisitions. So I would not be basing my purchases on that.

The PX4 is a full polymer, unlike the 92 and such, but just about every 'wonder 9' out there is polymer nowadays. Beretta also has the CX4 and TX4 line too. So you have carbines and shotguns to match with the PX4.

I have the PX4 compact in 9mm. Bought it when they first came out in 2011. It is the most accurate auto I have owned. The trigger is great and recoil minimal. The rotating barrel is a great design. I can use the full size 20rd mags in the compact too. Plus, the PX4 is one of the more attractive polymer guns out there.

If you want to get fancy, Beretta has aftermarket factory parts that you can upgrade with. A steel trigger, mainspring rod, whole firing assembly, and slim decocker/slide lock levers. I would like to add that my PX4 is bone stock. I have not had one issue with it that way, and it is still the most accurate auto I have shot. The decocker levers don't bother me and actually give me something to grab onto when racking. My holster covers the levers when concealed, so there is nothing to snag if drawed.

Beretta is a great company and knows how to make a quality gun. Too bad they don't get the recognition they deserve.

Does anyone own or has at least fired one of those early megabuck Korth 9mm's?

Isn't it ironic, that on this forum, barely any S&W pistols have been mentioned? I owned two fairly early models, a 39 and 59. In all aspects they were OK, but as my shooting and collecting tastes evolved, I moved on to what I see as superior guns. They made a great revolver once (as compared to the current crop), but their semi-auto's were and are easy to one-up.

Well, "best" for me means DA/SA with an exposed hammer. Note that most on my list have single stack mags.

Colt Double Eagle

S&W Model 39

SIG P225
SIG P226
SIG P228

Walther P5
Walther P5C Compact
Walther P38

If you want to include single actions:

Colt - any of their 9mm 1911s. There are other manufacturers who also make decent, reliable 9mm 1911s as well. (A 500+ round break in period is not my idea of reliable, so scratch those.)

FN/Browning Hi-Power

Lahti Valmet L-35 (very reliable)

Mauser - Luger

S&W 952 (Wish I had one)

SIG P210 (probably the finest 9mm ever made. Unfortunately made from Unaffordium alloy)
SIG 226R LEGION SAO (not my cup of tea)

Striker fired 9mm:

None (dislike them all)

I think the cz75/85 have it sewed up. It's the number one pick on most polls. Plus the hopalong capacity. Up to 21,20,19 round mags.

CZ75 (original, circa 1978) : has the "three BIG A's" covered... IMHO

I have always liked the CZ 75 platform. There are good clones out there. IMI/IWI Jericho are a good example. (steel frame) I just bought a new in the box un-issued military example in .40 S&W. It has not been to the range yet. My son has a mid size in .45.
I have always liked the looks & reputation of a High Power. They feel terrible in my hand.
I do like a 9mm, 1911. Bob

Based on your response to my previous statement, you seem to imply that I was trying to endorse S&W as "top spot" 9mm manufacturer. I wasn't. I was merely replying to the mention of "Irony," and right next door are forums that give specific comments/praise for S&W.

Now, in response to your comment about any of S&W guns not "hit top spot." Top spot for what? Are we talking about tops at most popular for competition shooting, for best bang for the buck, or for most occupying gun shop counters by quantity?

Sig P210
CZ-75
Browning Hi-Power
H&K P-7
S&W M 39-2

Or the new king in waiting, any quality build 1911 in 9mm.

The rotating barrel STI pistols are now sold as Grand Powers. An earlier post showed an X-Calibur. As a K100 Mk7 owner I agree.

Now, in response to your comment about any of S&W guns not "hit top spot." Top spot for what? Are we talking about tops at most popular for competition shooting, for best bang for the buck, or for most occupying gun shop counters by quantity?
I like and own many S&W 9's, they are good guns I just don't rate them as the best in any category.

What I meant by not hitting top spot was in regards to different types of guns. For example, a compact, full size, pocket gun etc. they have good 9's in those categories, just nothing that jumps out at being the best.

I agree with you for the most part. I'm saying this because I think smith & wesson 9s are just okay, okay for me anyway. But S&W do however also have the performance center 9s based on the 2nd and 3rd gen handguns. If money is not a matter, I think they're tops. Thing is the going price, for say like a basic 5906pc is just ridiculous, and that if you can find one for sale.

Jericho 941 FS. Steel. Compact version of the CZ 75 that I just love at a fraction of the cost . Interchangeble with CZ mags. Never failed me. Zero issues with junk and premium ammo. On the used market Bud's has them at times for under 250.00. Life is good.

The best 9mm is the one you own, and yes, as of right now I only have one...

CZ 75 (full frame, compact, you name it) in my opinion.
Based on accuracy and cost.
I've shot just about every 9MM there is.
CZ has a winner.

BC1023 She is really beautiful and an excellent photo, thanks for sharing!

I would really love to see what you would build for yourself, all of the pistol exactly the way you want it.

THIS IS AN IMPORTANT QUALIFIER---BEST AT WHAT ? ? ?

THE ONLY 9MM, THAT I HAVE EVER OWNED, WAS A NAZI MARKED, NUMBERS MATCHING, WALTHER P-38. THAT WAS CERTAINLY ICONIC, AND GROUNDBREAKING, AS FAR AS SEVERAL FEATURES.........

THE BROWNING HI-POWER HAS A DIE HARD FOLLOWING, EVEN AMONGST CENTERFIRE BULLSEYE SHOOTERS THAT I COMPETED AGAINST. IMHO---ANY SPECIMEN THAT I EVER TRIED, DID NOT HAVE A TRIGGER, THE EQUAL OF MY '70 SERIES, COLT NAT'L MATCH, IN .45 ACP......

THE BERETTA HAS ITS FANS OF THE 92, AMONG LATER DAY, POST VIETNAM ERA, VETERANS, WHO TRAINED WITH IT, AND CARRIED IT AS THE US MILITARY SIDEARM.....

I KNOW NOTHING OF THE FABLED TUPPERWARE GUNS. HEY HAVE A RABID, CULT-LIKE FOLLOWING. THEIR LOOKS HURT MY EYES, AND THIER TRIGGERS LEAVE A GREAT DEAL TO BE DESIRED, AT LEAST THE COUPLE THAT I TRIED. THEIR IS A SMPLE DISCONNECTOR SWAP, THAT HELPS. THEY GO BANG EVERY TIME, AND LEOS OR OTHERS, THAT PUT THEIR LIVES ON THE LINE EVERYDAY, LOVE THEM......

SO MOST RESPECTFULLY, OP, PERHAPS A TIGHTER FRAMING OF THE QUESTION WOULD YIELD MORE VALUABLE RESULTS ? ? ?

There are a bunch of boutique brands that cost a lot, and are excellent guns. Sphinx is an example of this.

I'll view from a production series; the best gun designs intended to be widely produced. I choose major companies, that made their own designs, not brands making clones or copies. So, CZ instead of Sphinx.

The pinnacle of the handgun is the late 20th century, to me: engineering and design that still matches current guns, but still designed around steel and/or alloys, instead of the switch to polymer. It's just my opinion, but plastic is just "good enough", while steel is premium. Hi-cap, DA/SA, mag release where you want it.

CZ: 85
Beretta: 92FS
Sig: P226
S&W: 5906
Walther: P88
HK: P7

FN: Hipower; points taken off for no DA

Star: M30; a fine gun, but not quite as prestigious a company, and now gone.

Ruger: P84/89; another solid gun, from a solid but not top-tier company.

Zastava: CZ99; surprisingly good pistol, from a company that is relatively obscure in the West (Zastava is respectable in Europe). Along with the CZ 75, Sig P226 and Beretta 92, it's one of the few that is still in production today (EZ9), and I give it points for that.

Daewoo: DP-51. This is South Korea's entry into the mix, and is still being marketed by Lionheart.

Glock: 19. This was never a metal frame brand, and is the breakthrough polymer gun.

IMM: HS2000. This is the main polymer alternative to Glock, and is marketed here as the Springfield XD. Obscure Croatian company that seemingly has struck gold in the market. I'd say it deserves a mention, in that this is one of the few polymer guns that is significantly better than the same company's metal gun (The PHP).

Others: either these are brands that you would want to upgrade from if given the choice (Bersa, Taurus), or make guns that are essentially imitations of the guns above (again, Taurus). Some might be excellent, but they aren't leading the way.

edit to clarify:you might consider the Zastava CZ99 a "copy" of the Sig P226 or Walther P88; I chose to leave it separate. To me, the ambidextrous controls and the combined decocker/slide release provide enough difference, making it a gun that resembles others, instead of a copy.

Here's my CZ-75B used all over the world for police & military, that must mean something. This gun just keeps shooting and doesn't jam. That's what you want out of a gun.It feels and look's a lot like a 1911 with higher capacity.Mostly because of the large beaver tail I guess.

Similar grip angle, and the safety is where it's supposed to be, too.

I must admit, I'm partial to Krunchentickers, and to CZ's in particular. As I posted above, I think they came out of the pinnacle of the handgun era; mature designs and understandings of what works, and not yet giving in to the plastic wave we see now.

It's been mentioned a couple times already, but the Walther P88 goes on the top of my list. These are my 2:

As long as you have medium to large hands it's a great gun, especially for a lefty like me.

For S&W, the 5906 is a great gun, here is mine with an overrun 5" slide (probably from Super 9 production):

The single stack compacts were probably some of the best concealed carry guns ever made. Here is my 3914 (along with my Shorty 40):

But just about any 3rd gen S&W 9 is pretty nice. Here is a TSW5943 I picked up when S&W decided to discontinue the metal guns:

It's a real shame the 3rd gens were gone, there was something for everyone, Steel, Alloy, Full Size, Compact, Double Stack, Single Stack, Double Action, Single Action, DAO.
