Ruger GP100 in 44 Special
Was over to the castboolits.com website tonight and they had some pics of the new Ruger GP100 in 44 special. 5 shots in the wheel and in stainless. Not to worry though all my 44 specials were made by S&W. Think they were talking about $800 for it. Maybe S&W will consider bringing back the 24-3 series?. Frank

Rumor is on the Ruger forum that Ruger will also bring back the Redhawk in 357 Mag. It supposedly will have a 2.75 inch barrel and an 8 shot cylinder. There is supposed to be a review online, but I haven't seen it.

I saw the Ruger in a NRA Email last night. Good for Ruger and I would be thinking about buying it but I'm now waiting patiently for the 2 3/4" barrel 69.

It is official
Well it seems to me that Smith and Wesson has officially passed the mantle of making quality revolvers in the calibers and configurations that I and many others like me want. The last revolver I bought was the new Ruger SP101 in .327 Federal magnum. Are you listening S&W...I guess not because your stock price is doing great as you sell lots of plastic stuff and a few of those Saf-T-Hammer devices. I will be buying one of the new Ruger GP100 revolvers in 44 special. The last S&W I bought was made in 1991. Wow I sound old...and I am only 49!

I'll be buying a GP100 .44 special as soon as I find one.

Nice!
Looks nice! Anyone else wonder why it is not chambered in .44 Magnum to compete with the S&W Model 69?

For those that like the GP100 I am happy for you. To me that thing hit every branch of the ugly tree on its way down. I realize that S&W has not done much in this department to satisfy those that would like a L-frame sized 5-shot .44 special snub. I would rather get a custom S&W done up like that than pick up a GP-100. The last good looking Ruger DA revolvers were the Six Series in my book. Now, a Speed-Six 5 shot .44 Special with a 3 inch barrel? I'd be all over that.

I'm sure it'll be a fine gun and they will sell quickly. No doubt that those who buy 'em will love 'em.
But ,I'll pass. Never been a fan of the GP-100. Bulky and clunky in my opinion.
Besides, I have a 696 no dash.

Don't Forget the lovely sweet little 44 Mag Flat top Blackhawks, I had a 1961, 6 1/2", 3 screw, recessed chambers. Rugers most beautiful and accurate handgun, loved it, and it kicked a lot less than a later Stainless 44 Mag Super Blackhawk with a 5 1/2" barrel in stainless with a round trigger guard. That thing kicked like a Freakin Mule, just a miserable piece that wouldn't hit the inside of a 50 gallon drum if you were standing in it??
I was led astray by a Colt 3rd Gen New Frontier with a 45 Colt/45 ACP cylinder, very pretty gun, but had NO soul. Now my 1962 Colt New Frontier in 357 is a sweetie, and as pure as the driven snow, I only wish it were 44 Special, but she's Special to me!

I'm definitely interested in the GP-100 in .44 Special. I'd really like the 3" fixed sight GP in .44 Spl, since I carried the .357 3" for years. The GP isn't the most refined looking revolver, but it does what it was intended to do. Plus, if you run out of ammo you can bludgeon the threat to death with it.
The only problem with Ruger bringing out the .44 GP-100 is that I still haven't gotten the .45Colt/.45ACP Redhawk yet. Then again, it's Ruger. I probably won't see one of the new GP-100's for at least a year.

The underlug is part of it but for me it mostly has to do with the grips and grip frame changes. Yes the rubber grips help with recoil but.....gag! I know there are lots of people who subscribe to the pretty is as pretty does school of firearms but I like mine to have what I consider to be good looks and good function. It is one of the reasons I find the Hi Power to be about perfect. It works and it looks great doing so.
But hey, that's why they make different models, so everyone can have what they want. If we all shot the same thing it would get boring quick.

I didn't bother to mention the grips cause I figured those are things that get changed out half the time anyway

Since I doubt they are bringing back the Security Series revolvers (I agree, they are great, I love all 3 of mine!), I'll be more then happy to purchase one of the new GP100 .44 specials.
You feel free to spend $1,500 - $3,000 on that custom S&W, I spend all the money I save on ammo and other guns.

Just when I thought there aren't many new production guns that interest me, I'd buy a new 2.75 inch eight shot .357 Redhawk in a heartbeat. I hope Ruger offers it.
Edit: just saw rwt1405's link. That's great news!

So a S&W 627 PC snub vs. the new Ruger review needs to happen...

but it is a very accurate revolver and it is indestructible for a 357 magnum, nothing on it has shook loose, like my colt 6" trooper bought in 82, or the old model 19 that I bought back in 78, both of those guns were showing evidence of loosening up and were traded off after 5-6 years of shooting on a regular basis in tournaments
I much prefer the classic looks of the colt and smith but ruger built a stout gun
I like a 44 special gun but the ammo is not readily available at most LGS, so I will not be interested in a new one, but have been thinking about getting one of the GP100 in 22

That is my way of thinking. I love my S&W 69 and carry it every so often but a 2 3/4 or 3 inch would be out standing. I have a pile of 20s stuck back in my safe hoping S&W will get their head out and come up with one.

Ruger is hitting them out of the ball park. Really liking that 357 Redhawk they just released. But S&W also has their new snub 66 and 69 too. Looks like 2017 is going to be a good year. I'll have to get a part time job to afford all of this.

Guys, in my opinion Ruger is responding to customer requests across the board. I love my 696's but I also have the GP100 44 on order. I bought all three barrel lengths of the 327 Single Sevens and they shoot great. I also am quite fond of the Ruger Redhawk 45 Colt/45 Acp. I have the S&W's in those cal. as well but at present you have to buy the S&W's from guys like us and we are not selling too many of them. I am thankful that Ruger is trying to answer the demand. Now if they would only build the newer flattop Blackhawk in 327 Federal with an additional 32/20 cylinder. All my very best, Joe.

S&W made a 5 shot 44 spl in an "airweight" type configuration with the Model 296 ...
it doesn't have much in common with the Ruger other than the caliber but I can see it selling well to the guys (like me) that want a mild mannered 44.
I know you can use the 44 mag, but the special is what was once called "the perfect packin' pistol" by guys who wrote about such things back in the day.
Ruger is making fine handguns just like they always have. Listening to your fan base always pays off!
